  • Here is represented a vortex panel method to evaluate the performance characteristics of the 2-dimensional turbomachinery with circular arc blades or logarithmic blades. The present method is characterized by distributing small consecutive panels of linearly varing vortex strength satisfying boundary condition at control points and Kutta condition at trailing edge. To confirm the reliability of the present method, experimental result of a 2-D pump impeller of six circular arc blades is compared with the calculated one. As an application of the present method, figures are presented in series showing velocity and pressure distribution between blades.

  • The study on the wake vortex behavior during the aircraft's take-off and landing flight phase is critical to the flight safety of the aircraft, following close behind and the economy of the airport. The study on the wake vortex behavior should include the understanding of the ground effect on the behavior of the multiple wake vortices, generated from aircraft during the take-off and landing flight phase. In thia study, numerical schemes that can consider the ground effect were devised, by applying a vorticity boundary condition and an image method into the existing two-dimensional Fourier-spectral method. The present method was validated by comparing the present results, with the computed and measured data in the published literature. It was shown that the present method can predict the generation and behavior of the secondary vortex near the ground with reasonable accuracy. In future, the effect of the atmospheric conditions such as the stratification and the wind shear on the behavior of the vortex pair will be studied.

  • In this paper, the vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders is studied using the immersed boundary method on the Cartesian mesh. The Reynolds numbers considered is from 100 to 200. Using the configuration of tendemly arranged multiple circular cylinders, the vortex shedding behind of the cylinders and their flow-induced motion are investigated. The staggered MAC grid arrangement, which is the typical grid system for the incompressible flow on the Cartesian meshes, is utilized. Pressure correction method is applied for solving the divergence-free incompressible velocity field. The body motion is described by immersed boundary technique that has advantages for moving object on the fixed computational domain. It is also discussed for the computational noise in hydrodynamic forces when body motion is represented by the immersed boundary method. The Predictor/Corrector method is used for simulating the nonlinear response of the elastically mounted cylinder excited by vortex-shedding.

  • As part of study on separated flow using the vortex particle method, stability of the method and particle redistribution were scrutinized. Stability was investigated by choosing different combination of numerical parameters. The Gaussian vortex was considered to make the problem simple by eliminating the complexity due to presence of walls. It was shown that the numerical method was stable when $v{\Delta}t/h^2{\leq}0.5$. In all the stable cases the circulation and the linear momentum were conserved. Without the particle redistribution, the angular momentum was severely attenuated.

  • Rotor wake causes unsteady aerodynamics of rotor blade. So, accurate prediction of wake is very important and vortex method is good solution for this problem. Aerodynamic force of the rotor blade is calculated by potential panel method and the rotor wake is simulated by vortex particle method. The vortex particle method is easier to treat wake-body interaction and has better performance to expect the effect of ground and fuselage interaction. Rotor in hovering and forward flight condition is simulated through these methods. Thrust and surface pressure of rotor are compared with experiment data.

  • Unsteady behavior of the early wake in the viscous flow field past an impulsively started semicircular cylinder is studied numerically. In this paper, we propose the hybrid diffusion scheme to simulate dynamic characteristics of wake such as a fishtail-like flapping and an alternate vortex-shedding more accurately. This diffusion scheme based on particle strength exchange is mixed with the stochastic nature of random walk method. Also, the viscous splitting algorithm which calculates convective and diffusion terms successively is applied in order to handle random walk method effectively. Consequently, the early behavior of wake due to the breakdown of symmetrical vortici balance is more practically simulated with the vortex particle method.

  • Most studies on the shape of the steady vortex ring have been based on the Stokes stream function approach. In this study, the velocity approach is introduced as a trial approach. A contour dynamics method for fluid velocity is used to analyze the Norbury-Fraenkel family of vortex rings. Analytic integration is performed over the logarithmic-singular segment. A system of nonlinear equations for the discretized shape of the vortex core is formulated using the material boundary condition of the core. An additional condition for the velocities of the vortical and impulse centers is introduced to complete the system of equations. Numerical solutions are successfully obtained for the system of nonlinear equations using the iterative scheme. Specifically, the evaluation of the kinetic energy in terms of line integrals is examined closely. The results of the proposed method are compared with those of the stream function approaches. The results show good agreement, and thereby, confirm the validity of the proposed method.

  • The computational prediction method of speed performance for a ship with vortex generators is proposed. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation has been solved together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out under identical conditions of the experimental method, i.e., towing and self-propulsion calculations without and with vortex generators. The speed performance in full scale is obtained through analyzing the computational results in model scale according to the revised model-ship performance analysis method of ITTC'78 with considering the vortex generators into account. The characteristics of resistance, self-propulsion and wake characteristics on the propeller plane are investigated. The proposed computational prediction clearly shows the effect of vortex generators and can be applicable to the design tool for vortex generators.

  • The numerical study about the vortex-induced vibration and vortex shedding in the wake has been presented. Prior to the numerical simulation of flexible riser systems concerning engineering conditions, efficiency validating of the proposed FSI solution method have been performed. The comparison between numerical simulation and published experimental data shows that the CFD method designed for FSI solution could give acceptable result for the VIV prediction of flexible riser/pipe system. As meaningful study on VIV and vortex shedding mode with the focus on flexible riser model systems, two kinds of typical simulation cases have been carried out. One was related to the simulation of vortex visualization in the wake for a riser model subject to forced oscillation, and another was related to the simulation of fluid-structure interaction between the pipes of coupled multi-assembled riser system. The result from forced oscillation simulation shows that the vortex-induced vibration with high response frequency but small instantaneous vibration amplitude contributes to vortex conformation as much as the forced oscillation with large normalized amplitude does, when the frequency of forced oscillation was relatively high. In the multi-assembled riser systems, it has been found that the external current velocity and the distance between two pipes are the critical factors to determine the vibration state and the steady vibration state emerging in quad-pipe system may be destroyed more easily than dual-pipe system.

  • An experimental study has been made to investigate the effect on wake flow and vortex shedding frequency by vortex stabilizer in Karman vortex type air flow sensor. The conditions investigated include 3 types of shapes and 3 types of separation distances of the vortex stabilizer. The phase averaged technique and smoke-wire flow visualization method are used to understand the detail information. The rolling up position of shear layer is fixed by the influence of the vortex stabilizer. Especially, the convex type vortex stabilizer has shown the more stable repeatability and linearity regarding the vortex shedding frequency compared to the other types.
