A Class-C Type Wideband Current-Reused VCO With Two-Step Automatic Amplitude Calibration Loop

  • This paper presents a wideband Current-Reused Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) with 2-Step Automatic Amplitude Calibration (AAC). Tuning range of the proposed VCO is from 1.95 GHz to 3.15 GHz. The mismatch of differential voltage is within 0.6 %. At 2.423 GHz, the phase noise is -116.3 dBc/Hz at the 1 MHz offset frequency with the current consumption of 2.6 mA. The VCO is implemented $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The layout size is $720{\times}580{\mu}m^2$.

  • Design and fabrication issues for an L-band GaAs Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit(MMIC) Voltage Controlled Oscillator(VCO) as a component of Personal Communications Systems(PCS) Radio Frequency(RF) transceiver are discussed. An ion-implanted GaAs MESFET tailored toward low current and low noise with 0.5mm gate length and 300mm gate width has been used as an active device, while an FET with the drain shorted to the source has been used as the voltage variable capacitor. The principal design was based on a self-biased FET with capacitive feedback. A tuning range of 140MHz and 58MHz has been obtained by 3V change for a 600mm and a 300mm devices, respectively. The oscillator output power was 6.5dBm wth 14mA DC current supply at 3.6V. The phase noise without any buffer or PLL was 93dB/1Hz at 100KHz offset. Harmonic balance analysis was used for the non-linear simulation after a linear simulation. All layout induced parasitics were incorporated into the simulation with EEFET2 non-linear FET model. The fabricated circuits were measured using a coplanar-type probe for bare chips and test jigs with ceramic packages.

  • InGaP/GaAs HBT공정을 이용하여 1.75 ㎓의 전압제어 발진기를 설계한다. 전압제어 발진기의 위상 잡음을 개선하기 위하여 저역 통과 필터의 특성을 가지는 새로운 잡음 제거 회로를 제안하고, 극 소형화를 위하여 FR-4 기판의 특수한 적층 구조를 이용한다. 제작된 전압제어 발진기의 주파수 변화 범위는 약 200 MHz이고, 위상 잡음은 120 KHz 옵?에서 -119.3 ㏈c/Hz이다. VCO 코어의 소비 전력은 공급 전원 2.8 V에서 11.2 ㎽이고, 출력 파워는 -2 ㏈m이다. FOM의 계산치는 191.7로써, 지금까지 발표된 FET나 HBT 전압제어 발진기보다 좋은 성능을 보인다. 완성된 전압제어 발진기의 크기는 3.266 mm ${\times}$ 3.186 mm로 극소형이다.

  • A triple-band (TB) oscillator was implemented in the TSMC $0.18{\mu}m$ 1P6M CMOS process, and it uses a cross-coupled nMOS pair and two shunt $4^{th}$ order LC resonators to form a $6^{th}$ order resonator with three resonant frequencies. The oscillator uses the varactors for band switching and frequency tuning. The core current and power consumption of the high (middle, low)- band core oscillator are 3.59(3.42, 3.4) mA and 2.4(2.29, 2.28) mW, respectively at the dc drain-source bias of 0.67V. The oscillator can generate differential signals in the frequency range of 8.04-8.68 GHz, 5.82-6.15 GHz, and 3.68-4.08 GHz. The die area of the triple-band oscillator is $0.835{\times}1.103mm^2$.

Optimized Phase Noise of LC VCO Using an Asymmetrical Inductance Tank

  • This paper describes fully integrated low phase noise MMIC voltage controlled oscillators(VCOs). The Asymmetrical Inductance Tank VCO(AIT-VCO), which optimize the shortcoming of the previous tank's inductance optimization approach, has lower phase noise performance due to achieving higher equivalent parallel resistance and Q value of the tank. This VCO features an output power signal in the range of - 11.53 dBm and a tuning range of 261 MHz or 15.2 % of its operating frequency. This VCO exhibits a phase noise of - 117.3 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 100 kHz from carrier. A phase noise reduction of 15 dB was achieved relative to only one spiral inductor. The AIT-VCO achieved low very low figure of merit of -184.6 dBc/Hz. The die area, including buffers and bond pads, is $0.9{\times}0.9mm^2$.

평면형 구조의 분리형 링 공진기를 이용한 전압제어 발진기 구현 (Implementation of Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using Planar Structure Split Ring Resonator (SRR))

  • 평면형 마이크로스트립 공진기를 이용한 고주파 발진기의 단점인 위상잡음 특성을 개선하기 위해 본 논문에서는 분리형 링 공진기를 제안하였다. 제안된 공진기를 이용하여 위상잡음 특성 개선 효과를 나타내기 위해 발진기를 설계하여, 5.8GHz 기본 주파수에서 7.22dBm의 출력과 -83.5 dBc@100kHz의 위상잡음 특성을 나타내었다. 이것은 ${\lambda}/4$ 마이크로스트립 공진기를 이용한 발진기와 비교하여 위상잡음 특성이 9.7dB 정도 개선되었다. 다음은 제안된 공진기에 버랙터다이오드를 추가하여 전압제어발진기를 구현하였다. 발진기의 특성은 최소 5.833 GHz에서 최대 5.845 GHz 까지 125 MHz 정도의 튜닝범위를 가지고, -118~-115.5 dBc/Hz@100 KHz의 위상잡음 특성을 갖는다. 본 논문의 발진기는 평면형 구조로 쉬운 작업공정과 소형화 특성 때문에 MIC 또는 MMIC 분야의 설계에 응용될 수 있을 것이다.

  • 본 논문은 $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS 공정으로 설계된 5.2GHz와 2.4GHz 이중 대역 무선 송수신기를 위한 주파수합성기를 제안한다. 2.4GHz 주파수는 스위치드 커패시터와 2분주기를 동작시켜서 발생시키고, 5.2GHz는 전압 제어 발진기의 출력 주파수로부터 직접 발생시키도록 설계하였다. 제안된 주파수합성기의 전체 전력소모는 25mW이며, 전압 제어 발진기의 전력소모는 3.6mW이다. 모의 실험된 주파수 합성기의 위상 잡음은 스위치드 커패시터 회로가 동작할 때, 200kHz 옵셋 주파수에서 -101.36dBc/Hz이고, 락킹 시간은 $4{\mu}s$이다.

Modeling and Control Method for High-power Electromagnetic Transmitter Power Supplies

  • High-power electromagnetic transmitter power supplies are an important part of deep geophysical exploration equipment. This is especially true in complex environments, where the ability to produce a highly accurate and stable output and safety through redundancy have become the key issues in the design of high-power electromagnetic transmitter power supplies. To solve these issues, a high-frequency switching power cascade based emission power supply is designed. By combining the circuit averaged model and the equivalent controlled source method, a modular mathematical model is established with the on-state loss and transformer induction loss being taken into account. A triple-loop control including an inner current loop, an outer voltage loop and a load current forward feedback, and a digitalized voltage/current sharing control method are proposed for the realization of the rapid, stable and highly accurate output of the system. By using a new algorithm referred to as GAPSO, which integrates a genetic algorithm and a particle swarm algorithm, the parameters of the controller are tuned. A multi-module cascade helps to achieve system redundancy. A simulation analysis of the open-loop system proves the accuracy of the established system and provides a better reflection of the characteristics of the power supply. A parameter tuning simulation proves the effectiveness of the GAPSO algorithm. A closed-loop simulation of the system and field geological exploration experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the control method. This ensures both the system's excellent stability and the output's accuracy. It also ensures the accuracy of the established mathematical model as well as its ability to meet the requirements of practical field deep exploration.

셀룰러 단말기용 소형 VCO 설계 제작 (Design and Fabrication of Miniature VCO for Cellular Phone)

  • 본 논문에서는 900MHz 셀룰러 이동통신 단말기용 소형 전압제어발진기를 설계제작한 후 시험하였다. 2 단자 회로해석 기법을 이용하여 VCO를 설계한 후 회로 설계 tool을 이용하여 최적화하였다. 최적화된 설계 데이터를 이용하여 트랜지스터 및 바랙터 다이오드로 구성된 6×6×1.8 mm³(0.065cc) 크기의 소형 VCO를 제작한 후 시험하였다. 제작된 VCO는 동작주파수 대역 내에서 -3.5 dBm의 출력 및 45MHz 의 Tuning range를 지녔으며, 10 KHz offset에서 -101.5dB/Hz의 우수한 위상잡음 특성을 나타내었다.

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication of a LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using 1-poly 6-metal mixed signal CMOS process. To obtain the high-quality factor inductor in LC resonator, patterned-ground shields (PGS) is placed under the symmetric inductor to reduce the effect from image current of resistive Si substrate. Moreover, due to the incapability of using thick top metal layer of which the thickness is over $2{\mu}m$, as used in many RF CMOS process, the structure of dual-metal layer in which we make electrically short circuit between the top metal and the next metal below it by a great number of via materials along the metal traces is adopted. The circuit operated from 2.63 GHz to 3.09 GHz tuned by accumulation-mode MOS varactor. The corresponding tuning range was 460 MHz. The measured phase noise was -115 dBc/Hz @ 1MHz offset at 2.63 GHz carrier frequency and the current consumption and the corresponding power consumption were about 2.6 mA and 4.68 mW respectively.
