  • In this paper, we propose BRAIDS, a boot storm mitigation plan consisting of an AI-based VDI usage prediction system and a virtual machine boot scheduler system, to alleviate boot storms and improve service stability. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is an important technology for improving an organization's work productivity and increasing IT infrastructure efficiency. Boot storms that occur when multiple virtual desktops boot simultaneously cause poor performance and increased latency. Using the xgboost algorithm, existing VDI usage data is used to predict future VDI usage. In addition, it receives the predicted usage as input, defines a boot storm considering the hardware specifications of the VDI server and virtual machine, and provides a schedule to sequentially boot virtual machines to alleviate boot storms. Through the case study, the VDI usage prediction model showed high prediction accuracy and performance improvement, and it was confirmed that the boot storm phenomenon in the virtual desktop environment can be alleviated and IT infrastructure can be utilized efficiently through the virtual machine boot scheduler.

  • Despite the impressive development of water infrastructure and management in recent decades, Korea still faces a number of threats to water security owing to such factors as climate change. This puts the country at the top spot amongst the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in terms of water stress. It is suggested that increasing food imports and decreasing domestic food production can contribute to water and land savings and in extension, to increased water and land security. This study therefore aimed at analyzing the impact of virtual water import through food trade on the water and land savings in Korea. It was concluded that over the period 2000 - 2017, significant amounts of national water and land was saved through the importation of major upland crops. In addition, we estimated the virtual water trade (VWT) that refers to the trade of water embedded in food products. The results showed a significant increase in the amount of virtual water traded over the study period.

  • Recently, the increased handling of on-line standards information has emerged as an important feature of information and communications technology (ICT) standardization. In order to meet market needs for on-time standards deployment, most standards organizations are actively seeking more efficient ways of standardization using electronic means in order to accelerate the standards making process. This paper suggests a virtual standard development environment designed for standards developers to carry out their standards-related activities on-line. In this paper, we outline a conceptual model of a concurrent standardization process and describe the design and implementation of an Extranet-based network system called standards information cooperative network (SICN). The system was created with a view to fostering faster standards development with functionalities such as a virtual management of networked standards developers, collaboration support tools, a workflow-based electronic signature system, and dynamic links for ready retrieval of standards information stored in a database. We conclude this paper with an introduction to the concept of a virtual standards development organization (VSDO) that supports all the features needed by the relevant standards making bodies to carry out their activities in a dynamic on-line environment.
