  • This paper presents the analysis results predicted by the upper bound approach in the limit analysis of concrete incorporating the original plastic and crack sliding solutions for short high-strength concrete beams that varied the compressive strength of concrete, and the shear span-to-depth and vertical shear reinforcement ratios. The significance of the distance away from the support to define the location where the yield line starts and the properties of cracked concrete, particularly related to high-strength concrete, is identified.

  • Based on the idea of eigen-mode expansion, a method to analyze the reflection of Lamb wave from a finite vertical discontinuity of plate is theoretically derived and verified by experiment. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental result, and this strongly suggests that eigen-mode expansion method could be used for solution of inverse scattering problem for ultrasonic testing using Lamb wave.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the necessity of the anchor lug system in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) by comparing longitudinal displacements of CRCPs with and without anchor lugs, and to investigate the effect of horizontal cracking on CRCP performance by measuring the vertical displacements. The measurements before and after the anchor lug section was separated were conducted for 12 days in June, and for 14 days in August after the abrupt displacements according to cutting disappeared, respectively. This short term measurement results showed that when anchor lugs were installed, a daily displacement variation at any location was less than 0.1mm; therefore, longitudinal movements were negligibly small. When there were no anchor lugs, longitudinal displacements mainly occurred near the free end and the displacement variation was small; therefore, an expansion joint system seems to be employed at a CRCP terminus without installing anchor lugs. However, further studies are needed to verify the terminus behavior due to annual temperature changes. The horizontal crack width variation was ignorable and did not affect the vertical displacement of the slab. Therefore, the horizontal crack did not delaminate the slab and did not seem to reduce the structural capacity and performance of CRCP.

  • This research aims to analyze the fracture coalescence characteristics of brittle sandstone specimen ($80{\times}160{\times}30mm$ in size) containing various flaws (a single fissure, double squares and combined flaws). Using a rock mechanics servo-controlled testing system, the strength and deformation behaviours of sandstone specimen containing various flaws are experimentally investigated. The results show that the crack initiation stress, uniaxial compressive strength and peak axial strain of specimen containing a single fissure are all higher than those containing double squares, while which are higher than those containing combined flaws. For sandstone specimen containing combined flaws, the uniaxial compressive strength of sandstone increase as fissure angle (${\alpha}$) increases from $30^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$, which indicates that the specimens with steeper fissure angles can support higher axial capacity for ${\alpha}$ greater than $30^{\circ}$. In the entire deformation process of flawed sandstone specimen, crack evolution process is discussed detailed using photographic monitoring technique. For the specimen containing a single fissure, tensile wing cracks are first initiated at the upper and under tips of fissure, and anti-tensile cracks and far-field cracks are also observed in the deformation process; moreover anti-tensile cracks usually accompanies with tensile wing cracks. For the specimen containing double squares, tensile cracks are usually initiated from the top and bottom edge of two squares along the direction of axial stress, and in the process of final unstable failure, more vertical splitting failures are observed in the ligament region. When a single fissure and double squares are formed together into combined flaws, the crack coalescence between the fissure tips and double squares plays a significant role for ultimate failure of the specimen containing combined flaws.

  • In this paper, a connection details for precast arch structures was proposed. Experiments were performed to evaluate structural performance of the loop connection details satisfying current design requirements and of alternative details for improvement of constructability. Precast arch specimens considering the current design requirements showed higher structural capacity than a cast-in-place arch specimen. Crack width at the connection of arch crown showed smaller value than 0.2 mm due to increased compression force by the applied vertical load. Strengthening by wire-mesh at notch area of the connection improved initial crack control capability. Connection detail with couplers and headed bars showed similar capacity to the reference specimen. The alternative details to improve constructability of reinforcements can be used without decreasing structural performance. Specimens with smaller internal diameter of mandrel and shorter loop splicing than the current design codes showed worse behavior in terms of crack width control.

  • This study makes mechanism of the fatigue strength improvement by the processing of weld toe clear for the vertical cross rib specimens which was made fillet weld joint, also it proposes to the appropriate later processing. As a result of tension fatigue test, the fatigue strength improvement could have been seen in later processed specimens than as-weld specimens. Especially fatigue crack initial life $N_c$ increased in specimens which processed grinder after hammer-peening. Also, fatigue crack propagation life $N_p$ improved more in hammer-peening specimens than as-weld or TIG specimens. It thinks that $N_c$ is because of the geometrical shape of weld toe, i.e. the relaxation of the stress concentration and also that $N_p$ is because the big compression residual stress which was introduced in the surface by hammer-peening is restraining the propagation of fatigue crack.

  • This study developed an analysis model of estimating fatigue damage using the linear elastic fracture mechanics method. Stress history occurring to an element when a truck passed over a bridge was defined as block loading and crack closure theory explaining load interaction effect was applied. Stress range frequency analysis considering dead load stress and crack opening was done. Probability of stress range frequency distribution was applied and the probability distribution parameters were estimated. The Monte Carlo simulation of generating the probability various of distribution was performed. The probability distribution of failure block numbers was obtained. With this the fatigue reliability of an element not occurring in failure could be calculated. The failure block number divided by average daily truck traffic remains the life of a day. Fatigue reliability analysis model was carried out for the welding member of cross beam flange and vertical stiffener of steel box bridge using the proposed model. Consequently, a 3.8% difference was observed between the remaining life in the peak analysis method and in the proposed analysis model. The proposed analysis model considered crack closure phase and crack retard.

  • In Seoul, structural deterioration is severe in the private masonry buildings which have been built since 1906s. But most of these structures remain without any repair works. As a result, the rate of deterioration is getting faster and these dangerous structures may cause hazardous circumstances to the adjacent structures and neighborhood. The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of wall cracks among the defect types which occur in private masonry buildings and to analyze the correlation between safety grades and wall cracks for offering the fundamental data. Using these date we can establish basic criteria for safety grades of structures and improve the quality of masonry buildings. The result of this study indicate that there are high correlations between safety grades and the width of crack but much less so with the length. Furthermore, with regard to crack patterns, vertical cracks much more negatively effected the safety grades.

  • The crack-free AlGaN template has been successfully grown by using selective area growth with triangular GaN facet. The triangular GaN stripe structure was obtained by vertical growth rate enhanced mode with low growth temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ and high growth pressure of 500 torr. The lateral growth rate enhanced mode of AlGaN for crack-free and flat surface was also investigated. Low pressure of 30 torr and high V/III ratio of 4400 were favorable for lateral growth of AlGaN. It was confirmed that the $4{\mu}m$ -thick $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$ was crack-free over entire 2-inch wafer. The dislocation density of $Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}N$ was as low as ${\sim}7.6{\times}10^8/cm^2$ measured by cathodoluminescence. Based on the high quality AlGaN with low dislocation density, the ultraviolet laser diode epitaxy with cladding, waveguide and GaN/AlGaN multiple quantum well (MQW) was grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The stimulated emission at 349 nm with full width at half maximum of 1.8 nm from the MQW was observed through optical pumping experiment with 193 nm KrF laser. We also have fabricated the deep ridge type ultraviolet laser diode (UV-LD) with $5{\mu}m-wide$ and $700{\mu}m-long$ cavity for electrical properties. The turn on voltage was below 5 V and the resistance was ${\sim}55{\Omega}$ at applied voltage of 10 V. The amplified spontaneous emission spectrum of UV-LD was also observed from pulsed current injection.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static behavior of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder using pre-tension method. A 30m long full-scale pretension PSC girder is fabricated by the portable fabrication system and tested. All results have been compared to those obtained from F.E.A results. Deflections at the middle of girders have been measured for evaluation. Also, strains of concrete at the middle of span have been measured. From the results of experimental, the load when initial crack was developed was obtained to be 1.75 time the unfactered design load in the full-scale girder specimen. Also, the data of specimen are satisfied the desgin requirements of ductility on the Korea Bridge Design Specification(2010). In service state, the vertical deflection at center of test specimen when a initial crack was developed is satisfied the vertical deflection requirement under live load of the Korea Bridge Design Specification(2010). To verify the experimental results, we numerical analyze the test and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. The pretension girder fabricated in site were found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.
