  • This paper has improved several ratio type estimators of the population median including their generalization in the presence of three known quartiles of an auxiliary variable. The properties of the improved estimators are discussed and applied. Both the empirical and simulation studies confirm that our new estimators perform efficiently.

  • This paper considers a problem of classification of variable stars based on functional data analysis. For a better understanding of galaxy structure and stellar evolution, various approaches for classification of variable stars have been studied. Several features that explain the characteristics of variable stars (such as color index, amplitude, period, and Fourier coefficients) were usually used to classify variable stars. Excluding other factors but focusing only on the curve shapes of variable stars, Deb and Singh (2009) proposed a classification procedure using multivariate principal component analysis. However, this approach is limited to accommodate some features of the light curve data that are unequally spaced in the phase domain and have some functional properties. In this paper, we propose a light curve estimation method that is suitable for functional data analysis, and provide a classification procedure for variable stars that combined the features of a light curve with existing functional data analysis methods. To evaluate its practical applicability, we apply the proposed classification procedure to the data sets of variable stars from the project STellar Astrophysics and Research on Exoplanets (STARE).

  • A coupled algorithm is proposed which first considers the creation of porous structure of the material and then the simulations of response of mechanical components with porous structure to a variable load history. The simulations are carried out by the Prandtl operator approach in the finite element method (FEM) which enables structural simulations of mechanical components subjected to variable thermomechanical loads. Temperature-dependent material properties and multilinear kinematic hardening of the material can be taken into account by this approach. Several simulations are then performed for a tensile-compressive specimen made of a generic porous structure and mechanical properties of Aluminium alloy AlSi9Cu3. Variable mechanical load history has been applied to the specimens under constant temperature conditions. Comparison of the simulation results shows a considerable elastoplastic stress-strain response in the vicinity of pores whilst the surface of the gauge-length of the specimen remains in the elastic region of the material. Moreover, the distribution of the pore sizes seems more influential to the stress-strain field during the loading than their radial position in the gauge-length.

  • This work studies the effects of transient reflectance on the thermal responses of a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort laser heating. The heating process is calculated using the conventional conduction model (parabolic one-step: POS), parabolic two-step model (PTS) with and without variable properties, hyperbolic two-step model (HTS). Results from the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS model with variable properties, however, results in totally different temperature profiles compared to those from POS models or calculation with constant properties. Transient reflectances are estimated from electron temperature distributions and based on the linear relationship between the electron temperature and complex dielectric constants. Reflectance of the front surface can be changed with respect to dielectric constants, while those of the rear surface remain unchanged.

  • A numerical model for masonry is proposed by following an internal variable approach originally developed in the field of elastic-plastic analysis. The general features of the theoretical framework are discussed by focussing on finite element models applicable to incremental elastic-plastic problems. An extremum property is derived and its implications in terms of convergence for convenient algorithms are briefly discussed, by including the case of softening materials and damage effects. Next, a numerical model is presented, which is suitable for masonry, can be developed according to the same internal variable formulation and enjoys similar properties. Some numerical results are presented and compared with the response of a masonry shear wall subjected to pseudodynamic tests.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of brick paved under-surface soil physical properties which are changed by fixed trampling. Thus, a sandy loam which is known as a profitable soil for plants is used an experimental soil to study the changes of the soil physical properties. It is related to sand bed's thickness & particle size which are settled by experimental variable factors. According to the variation of sand bed's particle size, bulk density and soil hardness at natural dryed soilcondition result in 0.075~2.00mm>2.00~5.00mm>2.00~8.00mm>5.00~8.00mm, and water content at natural dryed soil condition are observed being insensible change rate from the point that sand thickness is 30~40mm and more sand bed's thickness constructed by the variation of sand bed's thickness.

  • This research investigates a rotary disk with variable cross-section and incompressible hyperelastic material with functionally graded properties in large hyperelastic deformations. For this purpose, a power relation has been used to express the changes in cross-section and properties of hyperelastic material. So that (m) represents the changes in cross-section and (n) represents the manner of changes in material properties. The constants used for hyperelastic material have been obtained from experimental data. The obtained equations have been solved for different m, n, and (angular velocity) values, and the values of radial stresses, tangential stresses, and elongation have been compared. The results show that m and n have a significant impact on disk behavior, so the expected behavior of the disk can be obtained by an optimal selection of these two parameters.

  • Some new family of Fubini type numbers and polynomials associated with Apostol-Bernoulli numbers and polynomilas were introduced recently by Kilar and Simsek ([5]) and we study the two variable Fubini polynomials as Appell polynomials whose coefficients are the Fubini polynomials. In this paper, we would like to utilize umbral calculus in order to study two variable higher-order Fubini polynomials. We derive some of their properties, explicit expressions and recurrence relations. In addition, we express the two variable higher-order Fubini polynomials in terms of some families of special polynomials and vice versa.

  • The continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanism considered here is the output coupled type which combines the functions of a 2K-H I type differential gear unit and a V-belt type continuously variable unit (CVU). One shaft of the CVU is connected directly to the output shaft and another shaft of it is linked to the differential gear unit. It is shown that some fundamental relations (speed ratios, power flows and efficiencies) for twelve mechanisms previously described are valid by various experimental studies, six of them produce a power circulation and the others produce a power split. Parametric analysis is carried out in relation to the efficiency, speed ratio and power ratios in order to assist in the design of an optimum configuration. Some useful properties associated with power flow modes also are discussed in the output coupled type continuously variable transmission.
