  • Basel committee suggests using Value-at-Risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) as a measurement for market risk. Various estimation methods of VaR and ES have been studied in the literature. This paper compares semi-parametric methods, such as conditional autoregressive value at risk (CAViaR) and conditional autoregressive expectile (CARE) methods, and a Gaussian quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE)-based method through back-testing methods. We use unconditional coverage (UC) and conditional coverage (CC) tests for VaR, and a bootstrap test for ES to check the adequacy. A real data analysis is conducted for S&P 500 index and Hyundai Motor Co. stock price index data sets.

  • This paper has suggested the methodology for the frontier portfolios and the optimal portfolio under the mean-VaR framework, not assuming the normal distribution and considering the investor's preferences for the higher moments of return distributions. It suggested the grid and rank approach which did not need an assumption about return distributions to find the frontier portfolios. And the optimal portfolio was selected using the utility function that considered the 3rd and the 4th moments. For the application of the methodology, weekly returns of the developed countries index, the emerging market index and the KOSPI index were used. After the frontier portfolios of the mean-variance framework and the mean-VaR framework were selected, the optimal portfolios of each framework were compared. This application compared not only the difference of the standard deviation but also the difference of the utility level and the certainty equivalent expressed by weekly expected returns. In order to verify statistical significances about the differences between the mean-VaR and the mean-variance, this paper presented the statistics which were obtained by the historical simulation method using the bootstrapping. The results showed that an investor under the mean-VaR framework had a tendency to select the optimal portfolio which has bigger standard deviation, comparing to an investor under the mean-variance framework. In addition, the more risk averse an investor is, the bigger utility level and certainty equivalent he achieves under the mean-VaR framework. However, the difference between the two frameworks were not significant in statistical as well as economic criterion.

  • he current VaR model based on the J.P. Morgan's RiskMetrics structurally can not reflect the future economic situation. In this study, we propose a One-factor model resulting from the Wiener stochastic process decomposed into a systematic risk factor and an idiosyncratic risk factor. Therefore, we are able to perform a preemptive risk management by means of reflecting the predicted common risk factors in the model. Stocks in the portfolio are satisfied with the independence to each other because the common factors are fixed by the predicted value. Therefore, we can easily determine the investment in each stock to minimize the variance of the portfolio. In addition, the portfolio VaR is decomposed into the sum of the individual VaR. So we can effectively implement the constitution of the portfolio to meet the target maximum losses.

  • It is well known that the distributional properties of financial asset returns exhibit fatter-tails and skewer-mean than the assumption of normal distribution. The correct assumption of return distribution might improve the estimated performance of the Value-at-Risk(VaR) models in financial markets. In this paper, we estimate and compare the VaR performance using the RiskMetrics, GARCH and FIGARCH models based on the normal and skewed-Student-t distributions in two daily returns of the Korean Composite Stock Index(KOSPI) and Korean Won-US Dollar(KRW-USD) exchange rate. We also perform the expected shortfall to assess the size of expected loss in terms of the estimation of the empirical failure rate. From the results of empirical VaR analysis, it is found that the presence of long memory in the volatility of sample returns is not an important in estimating an accurate VaR performance. However, it is more important to consider a model with skewed-Student-t distribution innovation in determining better VaR. In short, the appropriate assumption of return distribution provides more accurate VaR models for the portfolio managers and investors.

  • Value at Risk (VaR) is the most popular measure for market risk. In this paper, we consider the VaR estimation of portfolio consisting of a variety of assets based on multivariate copula model known as vine copula. In particular, sparse vine copula which penalizes too many parameters is considered. We show in the simulation study that sparsity indeed improves out-of-sample forecasting of VaR. Empirical analysis on 60 KOSPI stocks during the last 5 years also demonstrates that sparse vine copula outperforms regular copula model.

  • The stock return is changed by factors of inside and outside or is changed by factor of market system. But most studies have not considered the changes of stock return distribution when estimate the VaR. Such study may lead us to wrong conclusion. In this paper we calculate the VaR of price-to-earnings ratios by the distribution that have considered the change point and used transformation to satisfy normal distribution.

  • Value at Risk(VaR) is a fundamental tool for managing market risks. It measures the worst loss to be expected of a portfolio over a given time horizon under normal market conditions at a given confidence level. Calculation of VaR frequently involves estimating the volatility of return processes and quantiles of standardized returns. In this paper, we introduced and applied the CreditMetrics model to estimate the credit VaR of Korean Property and Casuality insurers.

  • This paper reviews the properties and application methods of widely used types of risk measures, identifies the rationale and business-side effects of hedging, derives the theoretical formula of optimal hedging ratio, and analyzes the various functional aspects of VaR(Value-at-risk) as a risk measure and a hedging tool. Especially this paper focuses on the characteristics of VaR compared with other risk measures in terms of their own principal determinants and identifies its stronger aspects in the dimension of hedging strategy tools. As well, this paper provides the detailed processes deriving the optimal hedge ratios based on the distributional parameters and risk factors. In addition, this paper presents the detailed and substantial processes of estimating the minimum variance hedge ratio and minimum-VaR hedge ratio using the actual data and shows that the minimum variance hedge ratio proves helpful for many cases although it is not appropriate for the non-linear portfolio including the option contracts. We demonstrate the trade-off relationship between the minimum variance hedge strategy and the minimum-VaR hedge strategy in their hedging costs and performances through calculation of the respective VaRs and variances of unhedged and hedged portfolios and the optimal hedge ratio and hedging effectiveness values for the given long position in US Dollar with the short position in Euro.

  • 1-octanethiol and vinyl acetate telomers ($R_8S$-nVAc) were synthesized and hydrolyzed with sodium hydroxide subsequently, 1.2-epoxyhexane was then introduced to the telomers. In addition, we prepared cotelomers of multi-alkylated nonionic surfactants with a molecular structure of xRnMA-yVA (x; hydrophobic group, y; hydrophilic group, MA; methacrylic ester, VA; vinyl alcohol, R; and alkyl group) and cross-linked with sodium tetraborate decahydrate. Their active surface properties were investigated by several techniques such as surface tension, foaming property, and emulsification power measurements. The surface tension of $R_8S$-8.8VA decreased without the introduction of 1.2-Epoxy hexane, and the degree of emulsification and foaming abilities of $R_8S$-8.8VA increased without the introduction of 1.2-Epoxy hexane. However, the differences were insignificant. The epoxy groups were attached to a $R_8S$-8.8VA cotelomer with a limited variation of the active surface properties. The surface tension of $1.1R_6MA$-8.8VA decreased after cross-linking subsequently, the degree of emulsification and foaming abilities of $1.1R_6MA$-8.8VA increased after cross-linking. However, there was no clear difference between them. The B-O bonds were attached to a $1.1R_6MA$-8.8VA cotelomer with a limited variation of the active surface properties.
