Healthy adults in the ranges of from 22 to 25 years old, 208 males and 140 females respectively, who have no specific organic diseases in the heart and lung, were experimentally studied on the effect of blood pressure, pulse and breath rates, and blood circulation by the postural changes of the supine, semi-supine, upright, sitting and trendelenburg position. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The blood pressure showed makred differences in the postural changes of the upright>sitting>semisupine>trendelenburg>supine position, orderly. 2) The breath rate did not show specific findings in the postural changes. 3) If the dental chair were suddenly tilted forwardly and backwardly, patients would be subjected to fall in the dangerous state, fainting.
A rotary double inverted pendulum, the nonlinear system has a regulation problem. In this paper, we linearize the nonlinear system at the upright equilibrium position. The linearized system can be expressed in state space. To maintain the upright position, we design a feedback controller using LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) algorithm. Then we simulate the system with third-order Adams Bashforth Moulton Method. The simulated result shows that the applied algorithm is effective for the regulation problem.
Objectives : To analyze the contents of ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫ and study the standard posture in context of Korean Medicine. Methods : Analyzed the terms related to the name, body region and orientation of Three Yin and Three Yang used in ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫ to deduce the standard posture of the description. ≪Lingshu·Jingmai≫ was used as supplementary data. Results : The term "Three Yin and Three Yang" in ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫ is used to indicate regions of the human body, and based on this, terms with orientation were used. Just like 'anatomical position', there is a standard posture in Korean Medicine, and it may seem to be similar overall, but there is a difference in posture in the upper extremity. In ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫, Greater Yang is the dorsal region, Lesser Yang is the lateral surface region, Yang Brightness is the anterior surface region of the human body. In the body trunk, Three Yin refers to the inner parts of the human body. However, in the lower extremity, Three Yin refers to the medial surface of the legs. The name of the individual Meridian-muscle was given following the region corresponding to Three Yin and Three Yang. In ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫, there is a basic posture that became the standard posture derived from the description. In an upright standing position, the feet face forward, the fingers naturally extended, and the back of the hand faces outward. The fact that the posture of the thumb is naturally extended is especially reflected in ≪Lingshu·Jingjin≫. This is clearly different from the "anatomical position" and as it can be the base of all areas of acupuncture, it is suggested that it be defined as the "Standard Position of Acupuncture Medicine". Conclusions : Based on our analysis, we suggest the "Standard Position of Acupuncture Medicine" as an upright standing position, with the feet facing forward, the fingers naturally extended, the back of the hand facing outward, and the thumb naturally extended.
Sixty male patients with polysomnographically documented OSA were included in this study. A pair of cephalograms were obtained in the upright and supine positions. In the supine position, the ANB angle, lower facial height and the cross-sectional area of soft palate increased and there was a decrease in the vertical airway length and oropharynx cross-sectional area. Positional changes did not affect the cross-sectional area of tongue, but the cross-sectional area of the oropharynx decreased in the supine position. The obese group had higher AI and RDI. Maxillary unit length, C3-H, the cross-sectional areas of tongue, soft palate and oropharynx were significantly greater in the group Obese than in non-obese group. No correlation was noted between the mandibular unit length and OSA severity, The group of small mandibular unit length showed shorter lower facial height and maxillary unit length, and smaller cross-sectional area of tongue than the long mandibular unit length group. Hyold bone positioned more inferiorly and cross-sectional area of nasopharynx decreased as the OSA severity increased.

Sonoring is caused by the repeated obstructions of versatile upper air way structure during sleep and is known as a kind of disease entity varing from simple snoring to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS) which can cause serious cardiopulmonary complications due to its hypoxic pathophysiology. It has been reported that over 30% of middle-aged person have the problems of snoring and its accompanied symptomes and signs. Cephalometric measurements, frequently used to measure sella-nasion-subspinale(SNA) and sella-nasion-supramentale(SNB) angles, can provide the informations about the posterior airway space(PAS), the mandibular plane(MP) and the position of hyoid bone. These informations are useful in determining the therapeutic modalities of the snoring and OSAS patients. However, with conventional routine upright position, it does not represent the actual images of obstructive mechanism during sleep but only show the images of awaken normal upper airway anatomy. Therefore we have taken dual images of a routine upright lateral and a supine cephalometric view to compare both.
In this paper, the double inverted pendulum having a single actuator is built and the controller for the system is proposed. The lower link is hinged on the plate to free for rotation in the x-z plane. The upper link is connected to the lower link through a DC motor. The double inverted pendulum built can be kept upright posture by controlling the position of the upper link even though the proposed inverted pendulum has no actuator in lower hinge. The algorithm to control the inverted pendulum is consisted of a state feedback controller within a linearizable range and a fuzzy logic controller coupled with a feedback linearization control for the rest of the range. Concept of the virtual work is employed to drive the linearlized model for the state feedback controller. The feedback linearization controller drives a DC motor with the modified reference joint angle from the fuzzy controller which adjusts a upright posture of a proposed pendulum system. Finally, the experiments are conducted to show the validity of the proposed controller.

A pendubot is a representative example of an underactuated system that has fewer actuators than the degree of freedom of the system. In this study, the characteristics of the pendubot are first reviewed; each part is then designed using Solidworks by dividing the pendubot into three parts: the base frame, first link frame, and second link frame. These three parts are then imported into the Simulink environment via a STEP file format, which is the standard protocol used in data exchange between CAD applications. A 3D model of the pendubot is then constructed using Simscape, and the usefulness of the 3D model is validated by a comparison with a dynamic equation derived using the Lagrangian formulation. A linearized model around an upright equilibrium position is finally obtained, and a sliding mode controller is designed based on the linear quadratic regulator. Simulation results showed that the designed controller effectively maintained upright balance of the pendubot in the presence of disturbance.
Motorized retractors enhance the safety of passengers by removing the slack of webbing and by holding upright driving position. Reliability of a driving mechanism that includes one-way clutch between the driving motor and webbing is directly linked to the safety of passenger. In this research, conditions for locking one-way clutch and also conditions for sustaining locking are theoretically investigated. the operation of a motorized retractor under realistic conditions is simulated in order to validate the proposed retractor design.

Background: Sitting posture influences movements of scapulothoracic and glenohumeral joints and changes the shoulder muscle activities. The development and maintenance of correct sitting posture is important for the fundamental treatment of shoulder pain during rehabilitation. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the sitting postures and the shoulder movements on shoulder muscle activities for both male and female. Methods: Twenty-eight subjects without shoulder-related diseases participated in this experiment. The subjects had randomly adopted three different sitting postures (upright posture, preferred posture, maximum slouched posture) and shoulder flexion angles in scapular plane ($30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$). Surface electrodes were collected from upper trapezius (UT), anterior deltoid (AD), and posterior deltoid (PD) and the active shoulder range of motion was measured in each sitting posture and shoulder flexion angle. Results: The active range of motions of the shoulder external rotation and the flexion in the scapular plane decreased from the upright posture to the maximum slouched posture (p<.05, mixed-effect linear regression with random intercept, Tukey post-hoc analysis). All muscles showed the highest EMG activities at $120^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion with the maximum slouched posture and did not show the gender differences. Conclusion: Increased shoulder muscle activities may become the potential risk factor for the shoulder impairment and pain if people continuously maintain the maximum slouched posture. Therefore, an upright position is necessary during shoulder exercises, as well as in activities of daily living, including motions involving lifting the arms.
To determine the effect of posture change on autonomic activity and to investigate valid parameters to reflex the autonomic activity from time-series pupil size data, a posture-related experiment was performed with 15 subjects, which involved measuring their electrocardiograms and pupil sizes. The experimental procedure consisted of three-sequence postures-supine, sitting and upright-for 5 minutes each, with rest sessions between postures. The subjects were notified of the entire experimental procedure. The parameters of the subjects' heart rate variability showed significant differences between the postures (heart rate: 63-70-80 beat, normalized low frequency power: 28-50-75, normalized high frequency power: 72-49-25 and ratio: 0.5-1.2-4.4 in supine-sitting-upright position respectively) as did the parameters of their mean pupil sizes (41300-53900-53700 pixels respectively) and the major frequencies (the third trend: 0.23-0.2-0.18 Hz respectively) of their pupil size variability according to changes in their autonomic activities induced by posture change. The experiment thus proved that posture change affects autonomic activity and that such activity can be estimated by the parameters of pupil size as similar as heart rate variability.
