This study presents the shape iteration method and the updated Lagrangian methods to calculate the initial tension and the reference length of cables of cable-stayed bridges. The girders and towers of cable-stayed bridge are modelled as 3-dimensional frame elements and the cable as nonlinear truss element or Ernst's cable element. Compared with the initial tensions of cables by finite element method in this study and by trial-and error method in practices, the tensions by the former are shown to be a little less than the those by the latter. The reference lengths of cables by Ernst's cable elements are almost consistent with those of cables by nonlinear truss elements. And the reference length of cables in this study are almost consistent with the arc length of beam with the same initial tension. Therefore the reference lengths of cables in cable-stayed bridges are shown to be obtained simply by the theory of beam with the initial tension calculated in this study.
Embankments on soft ground experience significant deformation during time-dependent consolidation settlement, as well as an initial undrained settlement. Since infinitesimal strain theory assumes no configuration change and minute strain during deformation, finite strain analysis is required for better prediction of geotechnical problems involving large strain and geometric change induced by imposed loadings. Updated Lagrangian formulation is developed for time-dependent consolidation combining both force equilibrium and mass conservation of fluid, and mechanical constitutive equation is written in Janumann stress rate. Numerical convergence during Newton's iteration in large deformation analysis is improved by Nagtegaal's approach of considering the effect of rotation in mechanical constitutive relationship. Numerical simulations are conducted to discuss numerical reliability and applicability of developed numerical code: deformation of cantilever beam, two-dimensional consolidation. The numerical results show that developed formulation can efficiently describe large deformation problems. Proposed formulation is expected to facilitate the upgrading of a numerical code based on infinitesimal strain theory to that based on finite strain analysis.

In this paper, the formulation of a new simplified finite element is made to analyze the ultimate strength of damaged tubular members subjected to combined axial force and end moment. A damaged tubular member that has the bending deformation and the local dent is modeled by beam elements. Tangent elastic stiffness matrix of a beam element which contains the effect of the geometric nonlinearity is derived by using the updated Lagrangian approach. Here the contribution of the stiffness in the dented area is neglected since its resistance against the external loads is considered to be small. A fully plastic interaction curve of the element under combined loads taking account of the local dent effect is selected as a yielding criterion at each nodal point. Also tangent elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is formulated by plastic node method. Comparison with the present solution and the existing experimental results is made showing that the present method gives quite an accurate solution.
In this paper, postbuckling behavior of laminated composite-stringer stiffened-curved panels loaded in local compression is analyzed using the finite element program developed. Postbuckling Analysis is performed in dividing the panel behavior into three basic parts. The eight node degenerated shell element is used in modelling both panel and stiffeners, and the updated Lagrangian description method based on the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor is used for the nonlinear finite element formulation. The progressive failure analysis is adopted in order to grasp the failure characteristics. The postbuckling experiment of the laminated composite-stiffened-curved panel had been done to verify the finite element analysis. The buckling load and the postbuckling ultimate load are compared in parametric study.
In this paper the unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with large structural displacement are solved by partitioned solution approaches in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element framework. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme. Both a rigid body and a geometrically nonlinear solid are considered as the structural models. The latter is solved by Newton-Raphson procedure. The equation governing the structural motion is advanced by Newmark-${\beta}$ method in time. The dynamic mesh is updated by using moving submesh approach that cooperates with the ortho-semi-torsional spring analogy method. A mass source term (MST) is introduced into the CBS scheme to satisfy geometric conservation law. Three partitioned coupling strategies are developed to take FSI into account, involving the explicit, implicit and semi-implicit schemes. The semi-implicit scheme is a mixture of the explicit and implicit coupling schemes due to the fluid projection splitting. In this scheme MST is renewed for interfacial elements. Fixed-point algorithm with Aitken's ${\Delta}^2$ method is carried out to couple different solvers within the implicit and semi-implicit schemes. Flow-induced vibrations of a bridge deck and a flexible cantilever behind an obstacle are analyzed to test the performance of the proposed methods. The overall numerical results agree well with the existing data, demonstrating the validity and applicability of the present approaches.

According to ow previous study, we confirmed That the Petrov-Galerkin natural element method(PG-NEM) completely resolves the numerical integration inaccuracy in the conventional Bubnov-Galerkin natural element method(BG-NEM). This paper is an extension of PG-NEM to two-dimensional geometrically nonlinear problem. For the analysis, a linearized total Lagrangian formulation is approximated with the PS-NEM. At every load step, the grid points ate updated and the shape functions are reproduced from the relocated nodal distribution. This process enables the PG-NEM to provide more accurate and robust approximations. The representative numerical experiments performed by the test Fortran program, and the numerical results confirmed that the PG-NEM effectively and accurately approximates The large deformation problem.

This paper presents development of a geometrically nonlinear triangular planar element including rotational degrees of freedom, based on the co-rotational(CR) formulation. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations and it is based on the assumptions on small strain and large rotation. In this paper, modified CR formulation is suggested for the developemnt of a triangular planar element. The present development is validated regarding the static and time transient problems. The present results are compared with the results predicted by the previous researchers and those obtained by the existing commercial software.
In this paper, a finite viscoelastic continuum model for rubber and its finite element analysis are presented. This finite viscoelatic model based on continuum mechanics is an extended model of Johnson and Wuigley's 1-D model. In this extended model, continuum based kinematic measures are rigorously defied and by using this kinematic measures, elastic stage law and flow rule are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. In kinematics, three configuration are introduced. They are reference, current and virtual visco configurations. In elastic state law, it is assumed that at a certain time, there exists an elastic potential which describes the recoverable elastic energy. From this elastic potential, elastic state law is derived. The proposed flow rule is based on phenomenological observation. The flow rule gives precise relaxation response. In finite element approximation, mixed Lagrangian description is used, where total and similar method of updated Lagrangian descriptions are used together. This approach reduces the numerical job and gives simple nonlinear syatem of equations. To satisfy the incompressible condition, penalty-type modified Mooney-Rivlin energy function is adopted. By this method nearly incompressible condition is obtain the virtual visco configuration. For verification, uniaxial stretch tests are simulated for various stretch rates. The simulated results show good agreement with experiments. As a practical experiments. As a preactical example, pressurized rubber plate is simulated. The result shows finite viscoelastic effects clearly.

In this work, a finite element model is presented for geometrically non-linear analysis of shell structures. Finite element by using a three-node flat triangular shell element is formulated. The non-linear incremental equilibrium equations are formulated by using an updated Lagrangian formulation and the solutions are obtained with the incremental/iterative Newton-Raphson method and arc length method. Some of results are presented for shell structures. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results available in existing literature.
A numerical model is presented to simulate the mechanical behaviour of composite steel and concrete columns taking into account the interaction between the hollow steel section and the concrete core. The model, based on displacement finite element methods with an Updated Lagrangian formulation, allows for geometrical and material non linearities combined with heating over all or a part of the section and column length. Comparisons of numerical calculations made using the model with 33 fire resistance tests show that the model is able to predict the fire resistance, expressed in minutes of fire exposure, of composite columns with a good accuracy.
