  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify trends of nursing research on disaster for nursing students in Korea through a systematic review. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across international and domestic electronic databases, and 13 of 506 studies were identified for this review. Results: The most commonly used variables in the study were 'disaster nursing competency (23.5%)' and 'disaster awareness (20.6%)'. In addition, the major factors influencing the disaster nursing competency of nursing students were analyzed as 'disaster preparedness'. However, many tools were developed for the needs of researchers rather than those that were sufficiently valid and reliable. Also, most studies did not use the theoretical framework. Conclusion: There is necessary to develop an instrument with confirmed reliability and validity to measure disaster nursing competency of nursing students. Finally, disaster education and research should be conducted based on the theoretical framework to enhance the disaster nursing competency of nursing students.

Data collection by single group pre- and post-design was conducted from February 18 to April 23, 2019 for 201 nursing college students before and after clinical practice for 8 weeks. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, paried t-test, and Pearson's Correlation, Multiple Regression using SPSS/Win 23.0. As a result of the study, Nursing competency increased after the first clinical practice than before, but it was not significant(t=-1.73, p=.084). Among the sub-factors of nursing competency, educational ability(t=-1.97, p=.050) and ethical practical ability(t=-209, p=.038) was found to increase significantly. Major satisfaction was significantly increased after clinical practice than before(t=-2.45, p=.015). After clinical practice, it was found that general satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and recognition satisfaction which are sub-factors of major satisfaction, had a positive correlation with nursing competency. As a result of analyzing the impact on nursing competency, it was found that recognition satisfaction explains nursing competency as 9.9%. Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the clinical practice curriculum that can improve nursing competency, develop a program that can improve major satisfaction, and verify the effectiveness.

  • This study aims to identify constructs of cultural competency specifically relevant to the Korean society and to test its reliability and validity among human service workers. For the purpose of the study, authors conducted focus group interviews and conferences with human service workers to draw the concept of cultural competency. Further, this study conducted to two separate pilot tests with 20 social workers with practice experiences in order to clarify descriptions and relevance of scale items. Based on the literature review on the concept of cultural competency and analysis of focus group interviews, 40 items were initially constructed and then were reduced to a 32-item scale after two separate pilot studies. Meantime, suggestions made by an advisory group were also reflected in the scale development process. Finally, one hundred ninety four workers in social service agencies were recruited to evaluate the relevance of the scale items in a 5 point Likert scale. Through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, 4 main factors were identified: 1) competency to use culturally relevant skills, 2) cultural awareness and sensitivity, 3) cultural knowledge, and 4) efforts to overcome cultural differences. These factors were consistent with sub-concepts of cultural competency in other studies. Confirmatory factor analysis also showed that the model fitness was at the high level and convergent analysis with the similar scale also showed high correlations. Internal consistency also remained at a high level. Based on the results, implication for social work practice and education were discussed.

  • This study provides job competency, self-leadership, and organizational culture as the determinants of job performance and examines interaction effects between and among determinants. Based on the empirical results, job competency and self-leadership affect job performance respectively in positive ways. but organizational culture does not. The interaction of self-leadership and organizational culture affects job performance in a positive way, whereas the interaction of job competency and self-leadership and the interaction of job competency and organizational culture do not. Also, the three-way interaction among job competency, self-leadership and organizational culture affects job performance in a positive way. It is our contribution that we introduce the factors suggested from different research streams explaining job performance and attempt to combine them in a single integrative model.
