  • When taught the precise definition of ${\pi}$, students may be simply asked to memorize its approximate value without developing a rigorous understanding of the underlying reason of why it is a constant. Measuring the circumferences and diameters of various circles and calculating their ratios might just represent an attempt to verify that ${\pi}$ has an approximate value of 3.14, and will not necessarily result in an adequate understanding about the constant nor formally proves that it is a constant. In this study, we aim to investigate prospective teachers' conceptual understanding of ${\pi}$, and as a constant and whether they can provide a proof of its constant property. The findings show that prospective teachers lack a holistic understanding of the constant nature of ${\pi}$, and reveal how they teach students about this property in an inappropriate approach through a proving activity. We conclude our findings with a suggestion on how to improve the situation.

  • This study examined influences of teacher's transformational leadership, and their trust and empathic understanding on children's learning motivation. Participants were 513 $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ graders from Seoul, Buchon and Inchon. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results showed that (1) Teacher's transformational leadership, trust and empathic understanding were positively related to children's learning motivation. (2) Teacher's transformational leadership was the strongest predictor for children's learning motivation. (3) Teacher's transformational leadership had a direct influence on children's learning motivation empathic understanding mediated between teacher's transformational leadership and children's learning motivation.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary school students' understanding of the human body by drawing the human organism. Data was gathered by open questionnaires of drawing for human body. The open questionnaire was taken with 530 elementary school students from 3rd to 6th grade. The results were as following: First, elementary school students show the highest understanding of the skeletal system, the digestive systems, the respiratory systems, the circulating system and the muscular system respectively. Second, elementary school students' understanding of the human body improved as the grade goes up. Third, it seems that elementary school students have had their own knowledge about the human body through environmental surroundings before learning about the human body.

  • Education for International Understanding is not fully implemented in middle schools although it is underlined in the 7th Curriculum. So this study aims to analyse the areas in which Education for International Understanding through the creative optional activities in the middle schools can be conducted, and the method to promote Education for International Understanding through these areas. And we propose the specific instruction plans which can be used in class on each area and some points of the methodological improvement.

  • This study investigated the relation between preschoolers' emotion understanding and parents' emotion expressiveness and attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness. Subjects were ninety 3- to 5-year old children and their parents. Parents' emotion socialization was measured by PACES developed by Saami(1989) and FEQ developed by Harberstadt(1986). And preschoolers' identification of basic emotional expressions and expression of their own feelings and others' feelings in various situations were measured. Results revealed that 5-year-old children understood emotion better than 3-year-old children, and mother's positive emotion expression influenced children's emotion understanding. The results are consistent with recent research showing that parents emotion socialization may be important for preschoolers' emotion understanding.

  • The concept of variables is central to mathematics teaching and learning in junior and senior high school. Understanding the concept provides the basis for the transition from arithmetic to algebra and necessary for the meaningful use of all advanced mathematics. Despite the importance of the concept, however, much has been written in the last decade concerning students' difficulties with the concept. This Thesis is based on research to investigate the hypothesis that LOGO programming will contribute to 6th grader' learning of variables. The aim of the research were to; .investigate practice on pupils' understanding of variables before the activity with a computer; .identify functions of LOGO programming in pupils' using and understanding of variable symbols, variable domain and the relationship between two variable dependent expressions during the activity using a computer; .investigate the influence of pupils' mathematical belief on understanding and using variables. The research consisted predominantly of a case study of 6 pupils' discourse and activities concerning variable during their abnormal lessons and interviews with researcher. The data collected for this study included video recordings of the pupils'work with their spoken language.

  • This study is to examine grammar understanding with beginner English speakers according to presentational methods of grammatical content. 18 English-speaking Korean beginners were randomly assigned and divided into two groups. We first examined if there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in grammar comprehension with and without illustrations. It was found that the group given the presentation illustrations showed greater understanding than the group without them. Second, no statistically significant difference in grammar understanding was found between the groups with and without materials marked for their awareness. Third, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups with the order of presenting content elements related to grammatical items. This study is to affirm the importance of illustrations as a component of Korean textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate preservice teachers' understanding of democratic citizenship. This study utilized the democratic citizenship frame to assess 17 participants' comprehension of this concept. The researcher designed a method course where participants in groups analyzed science activities to identify democratic citizenship components. Through the analysis of two science activities-one on energy and the other on climate change-and the development of science panels addressing various global issues, preservice teachers' understanding of democratic citizenship was enhanced. Preservice teachers showed a good understanding of critical thinking, communication and collaboration, and STS (science, technology, and society); and the most enhanced understanding of empathy, which was the least perceived in pre-survey, component of democratic citizenship. The democratic citizenship frame proved to be a valuable tool for teaching and learning this topic, particularly when applied to socioscientific issues in the classroom. More research-based revisions of the science curriculum are necessary, and more systematic practices with reflections are essential in teacher education.

  • Green Construction is the construction activities that conserved energy, land, water and material to reduce the negative effect to the environment while assuring essential demand on quality and safety during project construction. This paper critically examine the contribution of awareness and understanding, green construction practices and green construction innovation with the green construction benefits. A measurement model based on the theoretical framework and exploratory factor analysis was developed and tested using structural equation modelling technique. This study employs a survey research methodology involving a total of 346 respondents among construction contractors, developers, clients and consultants in the construction industry. The findings indicate that the awareness and understanding, green construction practices and green construction innovation are significant predictors of the green construction benefits. From the practical perspective, the findings should alert the construction participants on the need of awareness and understanding, green construction practices and green construction innovation towards the green construction benefits. In addition, the findings can be used as diagnostic tool for continuous improvements in the Malaysian construction industry.
