  • The ultraviolet blocking agents used to skincare are largely classified ultraviolet scattering agent and ultraviolet absorbent agents. There are UVC, UVB, and UBA in ultraviolet ray(UV) showing shorter wavelength than visible light. Both visible light and UVA give rise to 1st dark-skinned phenomena. On exposure of the skin to UV, phenomena of skin variation are termed sunburn or suntan. There are chronic and acute adverse reactions in skin response to UV. The latter is caused by UVB, which has mainly effects on the skin. But lately due to destruction of ozone layer, UVA has more serious irritation on the skin than UVB. In this paper spectrometric properties of UV absorbent agents such as PABA, octyl-PABA, Urocanic acid, and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone in vitro have been investigate. As results, it was found that the three fomer were more suitable than the last. UV scattering measurements on the sample used inorganic pigments showed that pigments containing titanium dioxide had a better scattering effects than the inorganic pigments such as $Fe_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, etc.

  • Ultraviolet C (UV-C, 200-280 nm) light has germicidal properties that inactivate a wide range of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms. UV-C has been extensively studied as an alternative to thermal decontamination of fruit juices. Recent studies suggest that the efficacy of UV-C irradiation in reducing microorganisms in fruit juices is greatly dependent on the characteristics of the target microorganisms, juice matrices, and parameters of the UV-C treatment procedure, such as equipment and processing. Based on evidence from recent studies, this review describes how the characteristics of target microorganisms (e.g., type of microorganism/strain, acid adaptation, physiological states, single/composite inoculum, spore, etc.) and fruit juice matrices (e.g., UV absorbance, UV transmittance, turbidity, soluble solid content, pH, color, etc.) affect the efficacy of UV-C. We also discuss the influences on UV-C treatment efficacy of parameters, including UV-C light source, reactor conditions (e.g., continuous/batch, size, thickness, volume, diameter, outer case, configuration/arrangement), pumping/flow system conditions (e.g., sample flow rate and pattern, sample residence time, number of cycles), homogenization conditions (e.g., continuous flow/recirculation, stirring, mixing), and cleaning capability of the reactor. The collective facts indicate the immense potential of UV-C irradiation in the fruit juice industry. Existing drawbacks need to be addressed in future studies before the technique is applicable at the industrial scale.

  • The human eye is exposed to UV and visible light. UV light exposure becomes harmful to the eye. Protection for eyes should block all ultraviolet rays. In our study, organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been applied to UV blocking coatings with UV absorbing materials on transparent plastics. The optical properties of UV blocking coatings were investigated in PMMA, CR 39 and PC substrates. In case of all UV absorbers, the transmission of UV light decreases with an increased amount of absorber. Our findings indicate that PMMA significantly reduced the transmission of UV radiation, CR 39 showed moderate decrease, while UV-uncoated PC had some UV blocking properties. Adhesion, hot water resistance and chemical resistance of the UV-coated CR 39 lenses were good. Pencil hardness were 4H. Abrasion resistance were poor.

  • We suggested the use of miniature hollow glass tubes having high ultraviolet (UV) transmission characteristics for the protection of optical-fiber-type UV sensors. We have recently proposed a highly sensitive optical sensor in the UV spectral range, using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) coated with an azobenzene polymer as the photoresponsive material. In this study, we used UV-transparent miniature glass tubes to protect the etched FBG with the azobenzene polymer coating. This technique will be very useful for protecting various fiber-based UV sensors.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a hybrid surface-polishing process that utilizes both mechanical and chemical energy. However, the recently emerging semiconductor substrate and thin film materials are challenging to process using the existing CMP. Therefore, previous researchers have conducted studies to increase the material removal rate (MRR) of CMP. Most materials studied to improve MRR have high hardness and chemical stability. Methods for enhancing the material removal efficiency of CMP include additional provision of electric, thermal, light, mechanical, and chemical energies. This study aims to introduce research trends on CMP using ultraviolet (UV) light to these methods to improve the material removal efficiency of CMP. This method, photocatalysis-assisted chemical mechanical polishing (PCMP), utilizes photocatalytic oxidation using UV light. In this study, the target materials of the PCMP application include SiC, GaN, GaAs, and Ru. This study explains the photocatalytic reaction, which is the basic principle of PCMP, and reviews studies on PCMP according to materials. Additionally, the researchers classified the PCMP system used in existing studies and presented the course for further investigation of PCMP. This study aims to aid in understanding PCMP and set the direction of future research. Lastly, since there have not been many studies on the tribology characteristics in PCMP, research on this is expected to be required.

  • Volleyball is an international sport with many fans. This sport has made significant progress in schools and clubs. Volleyball is suitable for all age groups and can be used in different environments. It has many social and physical benefits. During the game provides special physical training for the players and is considered one of the most exciting games. Another type of volleyball is beach volleyball, a beach sport and one of the Olympic sports held on the sand with the same rules as volleyball. This sport is usually played in coastal areas, especially with wide sandy beaches. Because this sport is played in open spaces, the players stay in this space for a long time and are exposed to dangerous ultraviolet radiation. It is a wavelength of light in the range of electromagnetic waves with a wavelength between 10 and 400 nm. This wavelength is shorter than visible light and more protracted than X-ray. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are naturally present in sunlight and include about 10% of all waves emitted from the sun's surface. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light causes acute and chronic damage to the skin and vision and even destroys the entire immune system. Different covers of the earth's surface reflect different amounts of UV rays. For example, snow cover, sand, and seawater surface reflect this radiation. Therefore, the health of volleyball players is in danger due to this harmful radiation. This work aims to introduce a type of clothing made of nanoparticles that can repel ultraviolet rays and protect beach volleyball players whose health is at risk from this radiation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the properties changes of wool fabrics dyed with safflower red and yellow colorants under Ultraviolet(UV)-light. For this purpose, the wool fabrics dyed with safflower red and yellow colorants were compared with each other after uv-light exposure in terms of K/S value, color changes(${\Delta}E$), morphology, and strength retention. K/S value rapidly decreased with increasing exposure time, but K/S value of the samples dyed with safflower yellow colorants decreased less than that of the samples dyed with safflower red colorants. In color changes, as increasing exposure time, $L^*$ and $b^*$ increased, $a^*$ decreased, and thereby ${\Delta}E$ increased in the samples dyed with safflower red colorants, $L^*$ increased, $a^*$ and $b^*$ decreased, and so ${\Delta}E$ increased in the samples dyed with safflower yellow colorants, indicating fading away by uv-light and changes of hue, value and chroma value. But the color change of samples dyed with safflower yellow colorants was less than that of samples dyed with safflower red colorants. SEM pictures showed a severe degradation by uv exposure, regardless of colorants type. Tensile strength slowly decreased until 14 days, and rapidly decreased until 21 days and slowly decreased. Strength retention of the samples dyed with safflower yellow colorants was higher than that of the samples dyed with safflower red colorants.

  • Ultraviolet light is required for the sporulation of Didymella bryoniae, a gummy stem blight fungus in cucurbits such as watermelon, melon, oriental melon, cucumber and pumpkin. In this experiment, the upper limit of wave length for the production of pycnidia of D. bryoniae was 365 nm - 375 nm. Two plastic houses were covered with either common transparent film (wave length longer than 225 nm is transmitted) or UV-absorbing film ( wave lenght shorter than 388 nm is absorbed). In both houses, seedlings inoculated with D. bryoniae were placed in the center of the house at 30 days after transplantation of watermelon (cv. Whanhoseong), and the disease incidences between the houses were compared until 80 days after transplantation. The number of disease lesions and incidence of pycnidia-producing lesions under the UV-absorbing film were reduced by 90% and 80%, respectively, compared to the common transparent film. The internode lengths of plants grown in the two houses were not significantly different, but the plants grown under the UV-absorbing film had longer vines and more leaves than plants under the common transparent film. However, fruit characters such as weight, length, width, rind thick and brix, were not different between the two houses. Occurrence of aphids was reduced in the UV-absorbing film, but those of mites or diseases (powdery mildew and sooty mold) were not different between the houses. These results suggest that disease incidence of gummy stem blight of watermelon in the greenhouse can be controlled by the use of UV-absorbing film.

  • We analyzed the deep-trap states of GaN/InGaN ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) before and after electrical stress. After electrical stress, the light output power dropped by 5.5%, and the forward leakage current was increased. The optical degradation mechanism could be explained based on the space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC) theory. Specifically, for the reference UV LED (before stress), two sets of deep-level states which were located 0.26 and 0.52 eV below the conduction band edge were present, one with a density of $2.41{\times}10^{16}$ and the other with a density of $3.91{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$. However, after maximum electrical stress, three sets of deep-level states, with respective densities of $1.82{\times}10^{16}$, $2.32{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$, $5.31{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$ were found to locate at 0.21, 0.24, and 0.50 eV below the conduction band. This finding shows that the SCLC theory is useful for understanding the degradation mechanism associated with defect generation in UV LEDs.

  • Recently, one of the authors has been reported an optically tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a photomechanical polymer. It was based on a typical FBG with a downsized diameter of 60 ㎛, coated with azobenzene-containing polymer material. Azobenzene is a well-known reversibly photomechanical stretchable material under ultraviolet (UV) light. The small part of the functional-coating region on the FBG absorbed UV light, which pulled the UV-exposed part of the grating. It was selectable as tunable FBG or tunable chirped FBG, by adjusting the position of UV exposure on the grating. As proof of concept for the tunable FBG device, the characteristics just including UV-induced center-wavelength shift and spectral-width changes of the device were reported. In this paper, we report for the first time that the microactuator makes it possible to control the spectral shape of the FBG reflection, according to the specifications (shape and intensity) of the UV beam that reaches the FBG coated with the azobenzene polymer. In addition, we provide the group-delay profiles for the chirped FBG, so that the sign of its dispersion (normal or anomalous) can be tailored by simply selecting the moving direction of the UV light's displacement in the experiment.
