  • This paper proposes an evolutionary model for automatically generating artificial creatures of various shapes and colors according to insect ecology. This model offers a novel way to naturally evolve the shapes and colors of artificial creatures. The evolutionary model used in our research is based on Genetic Algorithms (GA). In this paper, artificial Computer Graphics(CG) creatures develop into various shapes and colors according to the evolutionary model. Later, they can be used as CG animated characters. This model also solves the problem of reducing the time and labor cost for mass production of various characters. It could be used in such areas as the cavalry battle scene in Disney's animation, “Mulan”. Our approach has two steps. At first, artificial creatures move according to information gathered form the five senses. This information is also used for generating the shapes of the five sense organs[1]. Then, based on the GA, evolutionary mode[2], we prepare prototype creatures, which evolve into various shapes and different colors in alternating generations. Finally, our evolutionary model successfully generates various character shapes and colors automatically.

  • This study compared the domestic and international commercial design patterns and domestic consumer preferences for wetsuit designs to develop a user-centered wetsuit design. An analysis of the domestic and international design elements for 1,802 wetsuits sold online over the past three years showed that the most frequent shapes, dominant colors, and patterns were the same, as consumers tended to buy full suits that were black or had geometric patterns. Dominant colors and assort/accent colors were different from the survey results. Men's wetsuits used fewer colors and patterns than women's suits. Domestic wetsuits used fewer patterns than those sold abroad; in addition, colors were applied differently. A consumer preference survey conducted on 213 male and female consumers in their 20s and their 50s in Korea indicated that 53.5% of respondents were the most affected by the shape when choosing a wetsuit design. The preferred color scheme was two colors, with a vivid tone used as an accent color. The factor analysis results on wetsuit design preference uncovered the six factors: individuality, display, function, acceptance, imitation, and comparison. An independent sample t-test also showed that men perceive individuality, imitations, and comparison factors higher than women.

  • In this paper, we present a method to define a color similarity between color images using Octree-based quantization and similar color integration. The proposed method defines major colors from each image using Octree-based quantization. Two color palettes to consist of major colors are compared based on Euclidean distance and similar color bins between palettes are matched. Multiple matched color bins are integrated and major colors are adjusted. Color histogram based on the color palette is constructed for each image and the difference between two histograms is computed by the weighted Euclidean distance between the matched color bins in consideration of the frequency of each bin. As an experiment to validate the usefulness, we discriminated the same clothing from CCD camera images based on the proposed color similarity analysis. We retrieved the same clothing images with the success rate of 88 % using only color analysis without texture analysis.

  • Specular structural colors generated by two-dimensional periodic binary gratings are investigated theoretically. An approximate mathematical model of the grating specular structural colors is described, based on scalar nonparaxial diffraction theory, and the functional relationships of specular structural color and structural parameters of gratings are analyzed. Through this, the optimal condition for maximizing the color-representation range in the standard CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram is derived.

  • On the whole the various medium colors were developed by repeat dyeing with different colorants after dyeing with one colorant in case of natural dyeing. In this study, however in order to obtain various colors on silk fabrics with natural dyes, pre-mordanting and combination dyeing were carried out. Metal compounds containing alum, copper and iron were used for pre-mordants. Gardenia and Sappan wood were used as colorants for combination dyeing. In combination dyeing of Gardenia and Sappan wood, these two natural colorants showed good miscibility in dye bath. The various colors were obtained according to various metal compounds for pre-mordants and various mixing portion of Gardenia and Sappan wood.

  • The main objective of this research was to understand the characteristics of contrast color coordination through the analysis of modern woman fashion color coordination as they appear in the 'Collections' from '04 SS to '09/'10 AW. Data collection of 122 was done through review of '$pr{\hat{e}}t$-$\grave{a}$-porter Collections' of four cities; Milan, London, New York, Paris. Statistical analysis of frequency and qualitative interpretation of contrast color coordination characteristics were completed. The main findings were as follows; (1) The combined color type of 'red+blue' and 'yellow+blue' were the most frequently appeared in the same ratio, and followed by 'green+violet', 'red+yellow', 'green+orange', and 'orange+violet'. The contrast tone showed the most, and followed by the similarity and identity, and the type of tone harmony used differently according to the type of contrasting color combination. (2) The general characteristics of contrasting color harmony were as follows,; Some contrasting colors looked harmonious when used light colors and the contrast between light and dull colors which made the hues even more harmonious. Also combinations of dull colors which work well with other dull colors or vivid colors. Light & vivid color or light & dark color, however, often showed too much contrast and using two contrasting vivid colors presented awkward and restless look. When used one vivid color and one dark color, a little easier to looked at, but still not particularly elegance or effectively harmonious. (3) The types of contrasting color harmony showed some differences between seasons. Contrasting color harmony showed more frequently in the S/S collections than in A/W collections.

  • Color planning system can be treated as a decision support system which includes both the recommendation of main color and harmonious colors. In this paper, we propose techniques that are useful to enhance the harmonious color recommendation with the main color selected by user. In order to reflect the knowledge about suggestion of harmonious colors, we use Ostwald color harmony theory, that is very systematical and easy to implement. Actually, Ostwald color space is similar to HMMD color model in MPEG-7. Due to the similarity between two color spaces, Ostwald color space can be represented as a virtual HMMD color space. Accordingly, we propose a technique to align the HMMD color space with Ostwald color space, thereby it is capable of enhancing a performance to search the harmonious colors according to Ostwald harmony theory. For recommendation of delicate and more exquisite harmonious colors in equal hue plane, we made the virtual color space continuous. The system can recommend various harmonious colors according to Ostwald color harmony. He(she) can select harmonious colors among the suggestions from the system.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the window display in the department stores in Daejeon. The framework of execution, colors, illumination, and kinds and colon of mannequins of the window display in four department stores in Daejeon were analyzed based on the photographs of displays from January to October in 2001. The results were as follows: First, in the framework of execution, each department store used mostly the triangle-framework during four seasons, which was a fundamental framework. Its characteristics were a sense of security, three-dimensional effect, and balance. It was the most suitable framework fur the mannequins and toruso. Second, a color scheme for commodities was all no-coloring scheme in each four seasons. The color of background was mostly white which harmonized well with the colors of commodities and lights. The plan for the color scheme of window display should always executed on the commodities, and the colors should be harmonized to produce the best display effect. Moreover, when commodities had two colors, the color of background should be in one simple color that manifest the commodities, or that is secondary color to the main color of commodities. Third, all department stores used all same illumination. Lack of illumination, management, and expense incured ineffective production of the display. Fourth, mostly, real mannequins with white or skin colors were used, and the toruso was next used in department stores. The set was limited because many companies had not made new sets for the display. Therefore, new sets including mannequins should be actively developed to produce effective display.
