The effects of various buffer layers on the $In_2O_3$ transparent conducting films grown on glass substrates by radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering were investigated. The $In_2O_3$ thin films were deposited at $400^{\circ}C$ of growth temperature and 100% of oxygen flow rate. The optical, electrical, and structural and morphological properties of the $In_2O_3$ thin films subjected to buffer layers were examined by using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, Hall-effect measurements, and X-ray diffractometer, respectively. The properties of $In_2O_3$ thin films showed different results, depending on the type of buffer layer. As for the $In_2O_3$ thin film deposited on ZnO buffer layer, the average transmittance was 89% and the electrical resistivity was $7.4{\times}10^{-3}\;{\Omega}cm$. The experimental results provide a way for growing the transparent conducting film with the optimum condition by using an appropriate buffer layer.

Transparent and conducting IGZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering on thin Cu coated glass substrates to investigate the effect of a Cu buffer layer on the structural, optical, and electrical film properties. Although X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that both the IGZO single layer and IGZO/Cu bi-layered films were in the amorphous phase, the IGZO/Cu films showed a lower resistivity of 5.7×10−4 Ωcm due to the increased mobility and high carrier concentration. The decreased optical transmittance of the IGZO/Cu films was also attributed to a one order of magnitude higher carrier concentration than the IGZO films. From the observed results, the thin Cu layer is postulated to be an effective buffer film that can enhance the opto-electrical performance of the IGZO films in transparent thin film transistors.
We fabricated highly flexible Mn-doped $SnO_2$ (MTO)/Ag/MTO/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/MTO multilayer transparent conducting films. To reduce refractive-index mismatching of the MTO/Ag/MTO/polyethylene terephthalate (PET), index-matching layers were inserted between the oxide-metal-oxide-structured films and the PET substrate. The PDMS layer was deposited by spin-coating after adjusting the mixing ratio of PDMS and hexane. We investigated the effects of the index-matching layer on the color and reflectance differences with different PDMS dilution ratios. As the dilution ratio increased from 1:100 to 1:130, the color difference increased slightly, while the reflectance difference decreased from 0.62 to 0.32. The MTO/Ag/MTO/PDMS/MTO film showed a transmittance of 87.18~87.68% at 550 nm. The highest value of the Haacke figure of merit was $47.54{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}^{-1}$ for the dilution ratio of 1:130.

A new type of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on a porous type Ti electrode without using a transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer is fabricated for low-cost high-efficient solar cell application. The TCO-free DSC is composed of a glass substrate/dye-sensitized $TiO_2$ nanoparticle/porous Ti layer/electrolyte/Pt sputtered counter electrode. The porous Ti electrode (~350 nm thickness) with high conductivity can collect electrons from the $TiO_2$ layer and allows the ionic diffusion of $I^-/I_3{^-}$ through the hole. The vacuum annealing treatment is important with respect to the interfacial necking between the metal Ti and porous $TiO_2$ layer. The efficiency of the prepared TCO-free DSC sample is about 3.5% (ff: 0.48, $V_{oc}$: 0.64V, $J_{sc}$: 11.14 mA/$cm^2$).
Indium (In) is widely used for transparent electrodes of photovoltaics as a form of indium tin oxide (ITO) due to its superior characteristics of environmental stability, relatively low electrical resistivity and high transparency to visible light. However, In has been worn off in proportion to growth the In related market, and it leads to raise of price. Although In is obtained from ITO target scarps, much harmful elements are used for the recycling process. To decrease of harmful elements, ITO swarf particles obtained from target scraps was characterized whether it is feasible to transparent conductive oxide (TCO). The ITO swarf was crushed with milling process, and it was mixed with new ITO nanoparticles. The mixed particles were well dispersed into ink solvent to make-up an ink, and it was well coated onto glass substrate. After heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ rich environments, optical transmittance at 550 nm and sheet resistance of the ITO ink coated layer was 71.6% and $524.67{\Omega}/{\square}$, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that the ITO swarf was feasible to TCO of touch screen panel.
The proposed stretchable transparent electrodes based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) were prepared on a polyurethane (PU) substrate. In order toavoid the surface roughness caused by the silver nanowires, a titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) buffer layer was addedby coating and heating the organometallic sol-gel solution. The fabricated stretchable electrodes showedan electrical sheet resistance of $24{\Omega}sq^{-1}$, 78% transmittance at 550 nm, and an average surface roughness below 5 nm. Furthermore, the AgNW-based electrode maintained its initial electrical resistance under 130% strain testing conditions, without the assistance of additional conductive polymer layers. In this paper, the critical role of the $TiO_2$ buffer layer between the AgNW network and the PU substrate has been discussed.
We have investigated the highly flexible and transparent Si-doped $In_2O_3$(ISO)/Ag/ISO multilayer grown on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates using a roll-to-roll sputtering system. The electrical and optical properties of ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer electrodes depended on the insertion of a nano-size Ag layer. Due to the high conductivity of a nano-size Ag layer, the optimized ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer electrodes showed the lowest resistivity of $3.679{\times}10^{-5}Ohm-cm$, even though the ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer electrodes was sputtered at room temperature. Furthermore, the ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer electrodes exhibited a high transmittance of 86.33%, because of the anti-reflection effect, comparable to Sn-doped $In_2O_3$ (ITO) electrodes. In addition, the ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer electrodes had a very smooth surface morphology without surface defects and showed good flexibility. The flexible OSCs fabricated on ISO(30nm)/Ag(8nm)/ISO(30nm) multilayer electrode showed a power conversion efficiency of 3.272%. This result indicates that the ISO/Ag/ISO multilayer is a promising transparent conducting electrode for flexible OSCs.
We investigated the optical and electrical characteristics of ITO/Ag/ITO (IAI) 3-layer thin films prepared by using RF/DC sputtering. To measure the thickness of all thin film samples, we used scanning electron microscopy. As a function of Ag thickness we characterized the optical transmittance and sheet resistance of the IAI samples by using UV-Visible spectroscopy and Hall measurement system, respectively. While the thickness of both ITO thin films in the 3-layered IAI samples were fixed at 50 nm, we varied Ag layer thickness in the range of 0 nm to 11 nm. The optical transmittance and sheet resistance of the 3-layered IAI thin films were found to vary strongly with the thickness of Ag film in the ITO (50 nm)/Ag(t0)/ITO (50 nm) thin film. For the best transparent conducting oxide (TCO) electrode, we obtained a 3-layered ITO (50 nm)/Ag (t0 = 8.5 nm)/ITO (50 nm) that showed an avrage optical transmittance, AVT = 90.12% in the visible light region of 380 nm to 780 nm and the sheet resistance, R□ = 7.24 Ω/□.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive material because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Furthermore, their geometric features such as a large aspect ratio and a small radius of curvature at tip make them ideal for low-voltage field emission devices including backlight units of liquid crystal display, lighting lamps, X-ray source, microwave amplifiers, electron microscopes, etc. In field emission devices for display applications, the phosphor anode is positioned against the CNT emitters. In most case, light generated from the phosphor by electron bombardment passes through the anode front plate to reach observers. However, light is produced in a narrow depth of the surface of the phosphor layer because phosphor particles are big as much as several micrometers, which means that it is necessary to transmit through the phosphor layer. Hence, a drop of light intensity is unavoidable during this process. In this study, we fabricated a transparent cathode back plate by depositing an ultra-thin film of single walled CNTs (SWCNTs) on an indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate. Two types of phosphor anode plates were employed to our transparent cathode back plate: One is an ITO glass substrate with a phosphor layer and the other is a Cr-coated glass substrate with phosphor layer. For the former case, light was radiated from both the front and the back sides, where luminance on the back was ~30% higher than that on the front in our experiments. For the other case, however, light was emitted only from the cathode back side as the Cr layer on the anode glass rolled as a reflecting mirror, improving the light luminance as much as ~60% compared with that on the front of one. This study seems to be discussed about the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the cathode back side. The experimental procedures are as follows. First, a CNT aqueous solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified SWCNTs in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). A milliliter or even several tens of micro-liters of CNT solution was deposited onto a porous alumina membrane through vacuum filtration. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated with the 3 M NaOH solution and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to an ITO glass substrate. It is required for CNT film to make standing CNTs up to serve as electron emitter through an adhesive roller activation.
