Palmitic acid inhibits inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages

  • Palmitic acid (PA) is one of free fatty acids, which is found from Gaultheria itoana Hayata and Sarcopyramis nepalensis. Although PA has a variety of pharmacological effects including mediates hypothalamic insulin resistance, induces IP-10 expression, and promote apoptotic activities, the anti-inflammatory mechanism of PA in mouse peritoneal macrophages remains unclear. In this study, we showed that PA exerted an anti-inflammatory action through suppression the production of tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$, interleukin-6, cyclooxygenases-2 and nitric oxide in lipopolysaccaride-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. Our study suggests an important molecular mechanism of PA, which might explain its beneficial effect in the regulation of inflammatory reactions.

  • Licorice species (Glycyrhiza species) are perennial plants belonging to the Leguminosae family. Licorice is world-widely distributed in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The licorice species, such as Glycyrhiza uralensis (G. uralensis) and G. glabra, have been widely used in traditional oriental medicine. G. uralensis is found in Central Asia to the northeastern part of China and G. glabra is distributed from southern Europe to the northwestern part of China. These licorice species are characterized by having various pharmacological activities, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune improvement, and anti-tumor effects. In this study, we investigated the comparative anti-inflammatory effects of four licorice varieties (G. glabra L., G. uralensis FISCH., Shinwongam, and Wongam) on LPS-induced inflammatory responses in RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line. We evaluated the cytotoxicity of licorices at various concentrations. In addition, the nitric oxide (NO) production was elucidated by the treatment of licorice.

Yield, Nutritional Content, and Antioxidant Activity of Pleurotus ostreatus on Corncobs Supplemented with Herb Residues

  • Improper disposal of herb residues in China has caused severe problems to the surrounding environment and human safety. Three herb residues, i.e., compound Kushen injection residues (CKI) and part one and part two of Qizhitongluo Capsule residues (QC1 and QC2, respectively), were used for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. The effect of the supplementation of corncobs (CC) with different herb residues on yield, nutritional composition, and antioxidant activity of P. ostreatus was investigated. Compared to the control, the higher mycelial growth rate was observed on substrates CC +30% CKI and CC +30% QC1, while the higher yield was obtained from substrates CC +30% QC2 and CC +30% CKI. Moreover, chemical analysis of fruit bodies revealed that the addition of herb residues to CC significantly increased proteins, amino acids, ashes, minerals (Na and Ca), and total phenolic contents but significantly reduced carbohydrates and $IC_{50}$ values of DPPH radicals. In addition, no heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and As) were detected in the fruiting bodies harvested from different substrate combinations. These results demonstrated that mixtures of CC with herb residues might be utilized as a novel, practical, and easily available substrate for the cultivation of P. ostreatus, which is beneficial for the effective management of herb residues.

아토피피부염의 한의학 진료 지침 개발을 위한 사전 연구 (A study on the Development of Traditional Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guideline for Atopic Dermatitis)

  • Background : The atopic dermatitis patient and their families are looking for safer herb-medicine treatments that possess therapeutic effects, but without the recurrence of symptoms and long-term harmful consequences that can result from other treatment. However, for many reasons, including methodological difficulties and lack of high quality study like randomized clinical study and systematic review, there are no consistent clinical guide line for atopic dermatitis in Traditional Korean Medicine. Objectives : Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines support clinical decision-making by making recommendations to guide clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to develop Traditional Korean Medicine clinical practice guideline for atopic dermatitis Result : The future guide should be based on scientific evidence and include the followings: (1) diagnosis of atopic dermatitis (2) the pattern identification of atopic dermatitis (3) classification of Sasang Constitution (4) efficacy assessment (5) treatment guideline (6) education for patients and care givers Conclusion : The development of Traditional Korean Medicine clinical practice guideline for atopic dermatitis is needed.

Effects of Korean traditional herbal formula for common cold on the activities of human CYP450 isozymes

  • Objectives: Most drug interactions are attributed to the inhibition or induction of the activity of cytochrome P450s (CYP450). Although the regulation of CYP450s by drugs has been widely reported, there have been few studies on influence of traditional herbal formulas on the drug-metabolizing enzymes. Because herbal formulas have been used traditionally to treat various diseases and because herb-drug interactions are crucial factors determining therapeutic efficacies, a systematic evaluation of the effects of herbal formulas is important. Methods: The effects of Galgeun-tang (GGT, gegen tang), Gumiganghwal-tang (GMGHT, jiuweiqianghuo tang), Insampaedok-san (ISPDS, renshenbaidu powder), Samsoeum (SSE, shensu drink), Socheongryong-tang (SCRT, xiaoqinglong-tang) and Sosiho-tang (SSHT, xiaochaihu tang) that are traditional herbal formulas used to treat common cold, on drug-metabolizing enzymes were evaluated through an in vitro CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C19 and CYP2E1 inhibition assay to assess its interaction potential with synthetic drugs. The inhibitory effects of herbal formulas were characterized with $IC_{50}$ values. Results: These six herbal formulas inhibited the activities of CYP3A4, 2C19, 2D6 and 2E1, in a concentration-dependent manner. Among the six herbal formulas, GGT critically inhibited CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP2E1. GMGHT also inhibited CYP2D6 and CYP2E1 to a greater extent than the other CYP450 isozymes. Additionally, SSE and SSHT may change the effects of medicines that depend primarily on the CYP2C19 and CYP2E1 pathways. On the other hand, ISPDS and SCRT were not inhibited CYP3A4, CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP2E1-mediated metabolism. Conclusions: These findings provide useful information regarding the safety and effectiveness of herbal formulas.

중국 및 한국 Database에서의 위식도 역류질환에 대한 반하사심탕의 효과에 대한 최근 10년간의 연구경향 (A Study Trend for the Effects of Banxia-xiexin-tang Decoction (Banhasasim-tang) on Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in Chinese and Korean Databases over the Last Ten Years)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this research is to examine the recent clinical research trends on the efficiency of traditional herb medicine (THM) on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to provide clinical evidence of herbal medicine, Banhasasin-tang or Banxiexin decoction by using a systemic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials (RCTs). Methods: In this study, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included that verified effects of traditional herbal medicine (THM), including a Banxia-xiexin-tang decoction, as a treatment for GERD. A study of the literature in Chinese and Korean databases was performed for papers published from January 1, 2010, to January 1, 2020. The selected literature was assessed by Cochrane's risk of bias (RoB). Results: A total of 90 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Except for four RCT studies, all studies identified the effect of a Banxia-xiexin-tang decoction in the treatment of GERD. The effectiveness of treatment was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group, as shown through various evaluation indicators, including the reflux disease diagnostic questionnaire (RDQ). Adverse effects were reported in 22 articles (24.44%). Conclusions: Treatment with Banhasasin-tang, or a Banxia-xiexin-tang decoction, was found to be effective in treating GERD. However, due to the low quality of available studies, the significance of this conclusion is somewhat limited. This study could serve as a foundation for further clinical studies on the development of diagnosis and treatment methods for GERD based on Korean medicine.

한의약분업과 관련된 여러 가지 문제 (Tasks for the Separation of Prescribing and Dispensing medicinal herbs in Traditional Korean Medicine)

  • Preconditions for the separation of prescribing and dispensing medicinal herbs in Traditional Korean Medicine are classification of medicinal herbs for general public and special medical uses, establishment of national medicinal herb distribution company of governmental base, restriction in purchase of medicinal herbs for special medical use, partnership between doctors and pharmacists of Traditional Korean Medicine, and coverage of herbal medicine-based medication in national health insurance, etc. The number of Traditional Korean Medicine Pharmacists which was born during 'the herbal medicine conflict' initiated in 1993, goes over 1,000 and will increase by 120 annually. The number of Traditional Korean Medical Doctors is over 17,000 and increases by 850 annually. So in order to engage partnership between two groups, the government have to arrange the number of outputs of each group. Standardization and classification of diagnosis and diseases in Traditional Korean Medicine is a matter of course in the separation of prescribing and dispensing medicinal herbs. Related societies and academies need to do researches with governmental fund first. After these works, we can launch a task force team for implementation of process for the separation of prescribing and dispensing medicinal herbs in Traditional Korean Medicine properly. Entering the national health insurance system for full coverage of Korean Medicine care service will be essential for the patients. Implementation the separation of prescribing and dispensing medicinal herbs in Traditional Korean Medicine would be the core of health insurance coverage for medication.

7가지 한약재 처방전에 대한 항산화·항균·항암활성에 대한 연구 (Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Anticancer Properties of Seven Traditional Herb-combined Remedies)

  • 본 연구에서, 우리는 동의보감에서 옹저에 대한 한약재 처방전인 길경탕(GGT), 대황목단탕(DHMDT), 사간탕(SGT), 소청룡탕(SCRT), 시호청간탕(SHCGT), 십육미류기음(SYMYKE) 과 황흑산(HHS)에 대한 항산화능과 항암과 항균활성에 대한 생리활성에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 총 페놀 함량은 길경탕 < 십육미류기음 < 소청룡탕 < 시호청간탕 < 대황목단탕 < 사간탕 < 황흑산의 순서대로 함량이 풍부하였다. 이들 중 황흑산은 SOD 유사활성, 환원력과 DPPH 라디칼과 ABTS 라디칼의 소거능이 가장 뛰어났다. 흥미롭게도, 이들 시료의 총페놀 함량과 그들의 항산화능과의 상관도는 높게 나타났다. 모든 시료에서 인간대장세포인 HCT-116에서 항암활성을 나타냈으며, 특히 황흑산은 가장 낮은 활성을 나타낸 길경탕보다도 7배 높은 항암활성을 보였다. 또한, 대장균인 Escherichia coli와 위염을 발생시키는 Helicobacter pylori 균에 대한 항균 활성을 시행한 결과 사간탕, 소청룡탕, 십육미류기음과 황흑산에서 항균활성이 보였다. 결과를 종합하여 볼 때, 한약재 처방전은 항산화와 생리활성물질의 소재로서의 가치가 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Insomnia is one of the highest frequency neuropsychosis of neuropsychiatry patients and is primarily caused by major depressive disorder. This case study is about a remedy for a 33 year-old woman who has insomnia and intense depressed mood caused by the continuous family jar. Also, she had the feeling of squeezing her body, pouring cold water into her body, anorexia and feeling cold and hot turn and turn. I operated mindfullness with accupuncture, herb-medication and aroma theraphy. Especially, mindfullness and Gagamguibi-tang were effective for relaxation and the sound sleep in quality and quantity. According to this study, the traditional oriental medical remedy such as accupuncture, herb-medication is effective for the cure of insomnia and mindfullness fortifies the oriental medical remedy.
