For implementing TMDL(Total Maximum Daily Loading) to adopt more effective management of water pollution, water quality modeling is pre-requisite and such modeling requires the extraction of stream centerline. The institutes responsible for the water quality modeling, however, generates the stream centerline with their own criteria and this lead to low accuracy of the extracted centerline as well as different modeling results for the same watershed. Therefore, this study mainly focused on the development of extraction method of the stream centerline. For that, an automated method has been developed through the integration of the centerline extraction method using a maximum inscribed circle with GIS. The result has shown that the newly developed method could enable to represent more details of the stream topography along with enhanced accuracy compared with conventional extraction method. Furthermore, the new method can afford centerline extraction for the island areas which has been the limitation of the conventional method thereby supporting water quality modeling in a detailed level.

A method for the numerical simulation of two-dimensional free-surface flow resulting from the propagation of regular gravity waves over topography with arbitrary bottom shape is presented. The method is based on the numerical solution of the Euler equations subject to the fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions and the appropriate bottom, inflow and outflow conditions using a hybrid finite-differences and spectral-method scheme. The formulation includes a boundary-fitted transformation, and is suitable for extension to incorporate large-eddy simulation (LES) and large-wave simulation (LWS) terms for turbulence and breaking wave modeling, respectively. Results are presented for the simulation of the free-surface flow over two different bottom topographies, with constant slope values of 1:10 and 1:20, two different inflow wave lengths and two different inflow wave heights. An absorption outflow zone is utilized and the results indicate minimum wave reflection from the outflow boundary. Over the bottom slope, lengths of waves in the linear regime are modified according to linear theory dispersion, while wave heights remain more or less unchanged. For waves in the nonlinear regime, wave lengths are becoming shorter, while the free surface elevation deviates from its initial sinusoidal shape.
Since Berkhoff proposed the mild-slope equation in 1972, it has widely been used for calculation of shallow water wave transformation. Recently, it was extended to give an extended mild-slope equation, which includes the bottom slope squared term and bottom curvature term so as to be capable of modeling wave transformation on rapidly varying topography. These equations were derived by integrating the Laplace equation vertically. In the present study, we develop a finite element model to solve the Laplace equation directly while keeping the same computational efficiency as the mild-slope equation. This model assumes the vertical variation of wave potential as a cosine hyperbolic function as done in the derivation of the mild-slope equation, and the Galerkin method is used to discretize . The computational domain was discretized with proper finite elements, while the radiation condition at infinity was treated by introducing the concept of an infinite element. The upper boundary condition can be either free surface or a solid structure. The applicability of the developed model was verified through example analyses of two-dimensional wave reflection and transmission. .
The recent industrial application requires technical methods to get the cutting fluid droplet surfaces in particular from the viewpoint of topography and micro texture. To characterize the surface topography of droplet, the combination of the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and wavelet filtering is well suited for obtaining the droplet geometry encountered in tribological research. This technique indicates a better agreement in obtaining an appropriate droplet surface obtained by the CLSM over a detail range of surface accuracy (resolution: $2{\mu}m$). And the results allow an excellent accuracy in a measurement of a droplet surface. The combination of extended focal depth measurement configured and multi-scale wavelet filtering has proven that it can construct a droplet surface in a successive and accurate way. A multi-scale approach of wavelet filtering was developed based on the decomposition and reconstruction of droplet surface by 2D wavelet transform using db9 (a mother wavelet of daubechies). Also this technique can be extended to characterize the quantification of droplet properties and other field in a wide range of scales. Finally this method is verified to be a better droplet surface modeling in a micro scale arising in a mist machining.

At these days, electronic maritime chart is in positively using various fields. But most of electronic maritime chart and topography information system is hard to using various fields despite that demand because that difficult approach from separately and specific constitution. This thesis apply to image filtering that extract requirement topography data from simplification of the whole system. And as constructing database of simple structure that getting various information from sounding depth and existing database, propose electronic maritime chart system to practicable 3D embodiment. And also propose convenience and commonplace to simple process about frequently renewal.
A hydraulically and hydrologically based estimation method of pollutant delivery load for water quality modeling is proposed. The proposed method works on grid basis and routes overland flows from one cell to the next following the maximum downslope directions. The method is able to consider spatially-varied data of source pollutant, topography, land slopes, soil characteristics, land use and aspects, which can be extracted from geographic information systems (GIS) and from digital elevation models (DEMs). Because of this feature, the proposed method can be expected to be used for evaluating the impacts of various practices on watershed management for water quality.

As part of the safety case development for generic disposal sites in Korea, it is necessary to develop generic assessment models using various geosphere-biosphere interfaces (GBIs) and potentially exposed groups (PEGs) that reflect the natural environmental characteristics and the lifestyles of people in Korea. In this study, a unique modeling strategy was developed to systematically construct and select Korean generic biosphere assessment models. The strategy includes three process steps (combination, screening, and experts' scoring) for the biosphere system conditions. First, various conditions, such as climate, topography, GBIs, and PEGs, were combined in the biosphere system. Second, the combined calculation cases were configured into interrelation matrices to screen out some calculation cases that were highly unlikely or less significant in terms of the exposure dose. Finally, the selected calculation cases were prioritized based on expert judgment by scoring the knowledge, probability, and importance. The results of this study can be implemented in the development of biosphere assessment models for Korean generic sites. It is believed that this systematic methodology for selecting the candidate calculation cases can contribute to increasing the confidence of future site-specific biosphere assessment models.

The Ministry of Environment have started the 'National Ecosystem Survey' since 1986. It has been carried out nationwide every ten years as the largest survey project in Korea. The second one and the third one produced the GIS-based inventory of species. Three survey methods were different from each other. There were few studies for species distribution using national survey data in Korea. The purposes of this study are to test species distribution models for finding the most suitable modeling methods for the National Ecosystem Survey data and to investigate the modeling results according to survey methods and taxonominal group. Occurrence data of nine species were extracted from the National Ecosystem Survey by taxonomical group (plant, mammal, and bird). Plants are Korean winter hazel (Corylopsis coreana), Iris odaesanensis (Iris odaesanensis), and Berchemia (Berchemia berchemiaefolia). Mammals are Korean Goral (Nemorhaedus goral), Marten (Martes flavigula koreana), and Leopard cat (Felis bengalensis). Birds are Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), Eagle Owl (Bubo Bubo), and Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo). Environmental variables consisted of climate, topography, soil and vegetation structure. Two modeling methods (GAM, Maxent) were tested across nine species, and predictive species maps of target species were produced. The results of this study were as follows. Firstly, Maxent showed similar 5 cross-validated AUC with GAM. Maxent is more useful model to develop than GAM because National Ecosystem Survey data has presence-only data. Therefore, Maxent is more useful species distribution model for National Ecosystem Survey data. Secondly, the modeling results between the second and third survey methods showed sometimes different because of each different surveying methods. Therefore, we need to combine two data for producing a reasonable result. Lastly, modeling result showed different predicted distribution pattern by taxonominal group. These results should be considered if we want to develop a species distribution model using the National Ecosystem Survey and apply it to a nationwide biodiversity research.

In this study, 2-D Godunov type finite volume model which can apply the mixed mesh including triangular and quadrilateral meshes for flood inundation modeling is used to compare and analyze the flood height, flood extent and model execution time according to mesh type and resolution. The study area is the Upton-upon Severn watershed in Great Britain, where the flood occurred for 22 days from October 29 to November 19, 2000. For the flood modeling, topographic data were constructed using high resolution LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging). The results of the 2-D flood modeling by the mesh type and resolution were compared with four ASAR (Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar) images captured during the flood period. This study has shown that flood height and extent can vary greatly depending on the mesh type and resolution, even if identical topography and boundary conditions are used, and that the selection of appropriate mesh type and resolution for the purpose and situation of the 2-D flood modeling is necessary.
Development of a modeling technique for accurately interpreting electromagnetic (EM) data is increasingly required. We introduce finite difference (FD) and finite-element (FE) methods for three-dimensional (3D) frequency-domain EM modeling. In the controlled-source EM methods, formulating the governing equations into a secondary electric field enables us to avoid a singularity problem at the source point. The secondary electric field is discretized using the FD or FE methods for the model region. We represent iterative and direct methods to solve the system of equations resulting from the FD or FE schemes. By applying the static divergence correction in the iterative method, the rate of convergence is dramatically improved, and it is particularly useful to compute a model including surface topography in the FD method. Finally, as an example of an airborne EM survey, we present 3D modeling using the FD method.
