This study analyzed the topographical characteristics by extracting property factors of stream (stream order, number of stream, stream length, mean stream length) and property factors of basin (basin area, basin length, total stream length, total number of stream, basin mean width, form factor, maximum stream order, basin density, stream frequency, relief ratio, mean elevation, mean, slope, maximum elevation) from DEM (digital elevation model) and stream network generated by 1:5,000 NGIS (national geographical information system) data for the Bukhan-river basin. In addition, topographical factors for upper, mid stream and lower stream were analyzed and the mutuality of the factors by linear and nonlinear regression curve was identified.
An area's topography refers to the shape of the earth's surface, described by its elevation, slope, and aspect, among other features. The topographical conditions determine energy flowsthat move water and energy from higher to lower elevations, such as how much solar energy will be received and how much wind or rain will affect it. Another common factor, the topographic wetness index (TWI), is a calculation in digital elevation models of the tendency to accumulate water per slope and unit area, and is one of the most widely referenced hydrologic topographic factors, which helps explain the location of forest vegetation. Analyses of topographical factors can be calculated using a geographic information system (GIS) program based on digital elevation model (DEM) data. Recently, a large number of free open source software (FOSS) GIS programs are available and developed for researchers, industries, and governments. FOSS GIS programs provide opportunitiesfor flexible algorithms customized forspecific user needs. The majority of biodiversity in island areas exists at about 20% higher elevations than in land ecosystems, playing an important role in ecological processes and therefore of high ecological value. However, island areas are vulnerable to disturbances and damage, such as through climate change, environmental pollution, development, and human intervention, and lacks systematic investigation due to geographical limitations (e.g. remoteness; difficulty to access). More than 4,000 of Korea's islands are within a few hours of its coast, and 88% are uninhabited, with 52% of them forested. The forest ecosystems of islands have fewer encounters with human interaction than on land, and therefore most of the topographical conditions are formed naturally and affected more directly by weather conditions or the environment. Therefore, the analysis of forest topography in island areas can be done more precisely than on its land counterparts, and therefore has become a major focus of attention in Korea. This study is focused on calculating the performance of different topographical factors using FOSS GIS programs. The test area is the island forests in Korea's south and the DEM of the target area was processed with GRASS GIS and SAGA GIS. The final slopes and TWI maps were produced as comparisons of the differences between topographic factor calculations of each respective FOSS GIS program. Finally, the merits of each FOSS GIS program used to calculate the topographic factors is discussed.
This study is a research result of investigating causes of landslides occurred at Uijongbu in Kyonggi Province, Korea. For works of this research, informations and data about landslides occurred at the site, geological and topographical informations were collected to analyze causes of landslides, and mapping landslides was performed by using results of field investigation. Data about rainfall during occurrence of landslides around Uijongbu was also used to find the effect of intense rainfall on occurrence of landslides. Based on informations obtained from field investigation and collected data, the scale and the pattern of landslides were analyzed and influencing factors on landslide such as intensity and duration of rainfall, topography, geologic condition, geotechnical engineering properties of ground, forestry were investigated statistically to find causes of landslides. On the other hands, for geotechnical engineering respects, slope stability analysis was performed for the typical sites chosen from the sites where the landslides occurred, using informations obtained from detailed topographical survey with total stations, field reconnaissance and results from laboratory tests.

The current combining of computer and geographic information technology. The result of such research oil determinate objective factors of hydrologic-topographical parameters through joining hydrology and GIS(Geographic Information System). In this study, we wish to offer the base data to determinate hydrologic-topographical parameters request of runoff model analysis in this basin. First, we computed the CN(curve number) by using GIS, and then classify the digital map of soil group and landuse on the Sulma river basin. Second, we used Avenue Script to calculate the height of efficient GIS work before using the Clark model to work out flood runoff flow.

This study was carried out to evaluate precipitation, geological and topographical factors from the landslide area occurred in Maeri, Sangdong-myeon, Gimhaesi, Gyeongsangnam-do. The landslide was affected by geo-topographical factors. Talus which is infiltrated easily by runoff was widely distributed in the landslide area. Concave areas on back- and toe-slope were built up colluvial materials and weathered soils. The colluvial materials were consisted of less weathered pebbles and stones (diameter: 10~100 cm) which are easily infiltrated during rainfall events. Also the landslide was mainly affected by an ascending of ground water table which is low in summit and high in toe-slope due to geo-topographical characteristics of the landslide area. The most important reason of the landslide was a lacking of drainage system of ground water despite the high infiltration rates of ground water in talus area during rainfall events.
On the basis of data obtained from 5 forest roads(Backyang, Byongatae, Saorang, Bukyu and Dangrim forest road) collapsed under a heavy rainfall in Chunchon, Kangwondo, this study was carried out to predict the cutting slope failure of forest road by using Quantification theory(II). The results were summarized as follows; The cutting slope failure was chiefly occurred by correlated action of road structure, vegetation and topographical factors. The cutting slope failure predicted by partial correlation coefficients and range values was characterized by longer than 8m of cutting slope length, depper than 2.5m of soil depth, between $30^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ of original ground slope gradient, absence of vegetation coverage on cutting slope, and greater than $60^{\circ}$ of cutting slope gradient. And the rate of correct discrimination by analysis of cutting slope failure was 90.1%.

The images of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) that provide wider swath and shorter revisit frequency than Land Satellite (Landsat) and Satellite Pour I' Observation de la Terre (SPOT) has been used fer land cover classification with better spatial resolution than National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR)'s images. Due to the advantages of MODIS, several researches have conducted, however the results for the land cover classification using MODIS images have less accuracy of classification in small areas because of low spatial resolution. In this study, uncertainty of paddy fields classification using MODIS images was conducted in the region of Gyeonggi-do and the relation between this uncertainty of estimating paddy fields and topographical factors was also explained. The accuracy of classified paddy fields was compared with the land cover map of Environmental Geographic Information System (EGIS) in 2001 classified using Landsat images. Uncertainty of paddy fields classification was analyzed about the elevation and slope from the 30m resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provided in EGIS. As a result of paddy classification, user's accuracy was about 41.5% and producer's accuracy was 57.6%. About 59% extracted paddy fields represented over 50 uncertainty in one hundred scale and about 18% extracted paddy fields showed 100 uncertainty. It is considered that several land covers mixed in a MODIS pixel influenced on extracted results and most classified paddy fields were distributed through elevation I, II and slope A region.

When a farmer buys a tractor, the power size of a tractor is determined by various factors such as farm size, farmer's age, farming type, topographical area of farm. Relationships between tractor selection and these factors were found. Three regression models were developed to analyze the relationship. Those models were an OLS-1 model (based on 567 samples having tractors), an OLS-2 model, and a Tobit model (both based on the 1,941 samples). Regression analysis results showed that farm size and farmer's age affected selection of power size for all models at an 1% significance level. It was also shown that some farming types also had significant relationships with the tractor power size. Upland cultivating farmers and livestock farmers had larger tractors than rice cultivating farmers, while orchard farmers had smaller tractors. As for the topographical area, only middle area had significant difference with plain area. Farmers who had a rice-transplanter or a combine had larger tractors than those who didn't.

Recently the large scale of forest disaster such as landslide and forest fire gives a very bad impact on not only forest ecosystem but also farm business so that it has became the main issue of environmental problems. In this study, the landslide hazard area forecast method was developed by considering not only the topographic thematic maps based on GIS and satellite images but also amount of rainfall data, which are very important factors of landslide. Uljin-gun was selected as the study area and the GIS weight score and overlay analysis were applied to topographical map and meteorological observation map. Finally the landslide area distribution map was constructed by considering the evaluation criteria. Also, the accuracy could be acquired by comparing the landslide hazard area forecast map and real damaged area extracted from satellite image.
Due to the topographical and climatic features of Korea, there is a strong possibility of a landslide. Recently, many landslides, caused by the improper land development, frequently occured at the mountain area every summer. Cheonan has been recognized to be relatively safe against landslide, but with the increased risk factors, systematic analysis of the landslide is required. In this paper, the topographical features of Mt. Seonggo in Cheonan City were extracted using contour maps, and water courses and basin areas in heavy rain were computed using the results. Conclusively, Mt. Seonggo areas were relatively safe in the view points of the length of water courses and rain-inflow, but in case of some narrow areas, sustainedly observation was required. Meanwhile, a contour map is proper to analyze the risk of landslide in the 1'st level in that it is more cost effective than other types of digital map.
