  • In this research, nonlinear Timoshenko beam element that is able to capture nonlinear shear deformation is developed. The proposed model shows more reasonable prediction than Bernoulli beam theory in short columns or strong shear column due to the consideration of shear deformation. The cross-section is modeled as fiber approach. Since the model is based on the fiber approach for section discretization, the plastic progress of the section can be traced and the coupling effect of the axial and flexural response. The developed element is implemented into the finite element program to analysis general reinforced concrete structures. As parametric study, reinforced concrete columns are analyzed and compared with experimental results, analyzed the property of behavior for reinforced concrete columns.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the Timoshenko beam supported by two elastomeric bearings at two far ends. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam is derived, in which both effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included as the Timoshenko beam theory. Also, boundary conditions of the free end are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The ordinary differential equation is solved by the numerical methods for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes. Both effects of the rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. Also, relationships between natural frequencies and slenderness ratio, foundation modulus and bearing length are presented. Typical mode shapes of bending moment and shear force as well as deflection are given in figures which show the positions of maximum amplitudes and nodal points.

  • This paper study the effect of open cracks on the dynamic behavior of simply supported Timoshenko beam with a moving mass. The influences of the depth and the position of the crack in the beam have been studied on the dynamic behavior of the simply supported beam system by numerical method. Using Lagrange's equation derives the equation of motion. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modeled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces on the crack section and is derived by the applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. As the depth of the crack is increased the mid-span deflection of the Timoshenko beam with the moving mass is increased. And the effects of depth and position of crack on dynamic behavior of simply supported beam with moving mass are discussed.

  • This paper deals with the coupled flexural-torsional vibrations of Timoshenko beams with monosymmetric cross-section. The governing differtial equations for free vibration of such beams are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. Numerical results are calculated for three specific examples of beams with free-free, clamped-free, hinged-hinged, clamped-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints. The effect of warping stiffess on the natural frequencies and mode shapes is discussed and it is concluded that substantial error can be incurred if the effect is ignored.

  • In this paper, the stability of a cracked cantilever Timoshenko beam with a tip mass subjected to follower force is investigated. In addition, an analysis of the flutter instability(flutter critical follower force) and a critical natural frequency of a cracked cantilever Euler / Timoshenko beam with a tip mass subjected to a follower force is presented. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter instability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Therefore, the effect of the crack's intensity, location and a tip mass on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.

  • Equations of motion for the vibration analysis of rotating pre-twisted beams with functionally graded material properties are derived in this paper. Based on Timoshenko beam theory, the effects of shear and rotary inertia are considered. The pre-twisted beam has a rectangular cross-section and is mounted on a rotating rigid hub with a setting angle. Functionally graded material (FGM) properties are considered along the height direction of the beam. The equations of stretching and bending motion are derived by Kane's method employing hybrid deformation variables. To validate the derived equations, natural frequencies of a rotating FGM pre-twisted beam are compared to those obtained by a commercial software ANSYS. The effects of the pre-twisted angle, slenderness ratio, hub radius, volume fraction exponent, and angular speed on the modal characteristics of the system are investigated with the proposed model.

  • A forced vibration model of a rail system was established using the Timoshenko beam theory to determine the dynamic response of a rail under time-varying load considering the damping effect and stiffness of the elastic foundation. By using a Fourier series and a numerical method, the critical velocity and dynamic response of the rail were obtained. The forced vibration model was verified by using FEM and Euler beam theory. The permanent deformation of the rail was predicted based on the forced vibration model. The permanent deformation and wear were observed through the experiment. Parametric studies were then conducted to investigate the effect of five design factors, i.e., rail cross-section shape, rail material density, rail material stiffness, containment stiffness, and damping coefficient between rail and containment, on four performance indices of the rail, i.e., critical velocity, maximum deflection, maximum longitudinal stress, and maximum shear stress.

  • In this paper, the stability of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to follower force is presented. In addition, an analysis of the flutter instability(flutter critical follower force) of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a follower compressive load is presented. Based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter instability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. Generally, the critical follower force for flutter is proportional to the crack depth.
