  • In the semiconductor manufacturing, yield enhancement is an urgent issue. It is ideal to prevent all the failures. However, when a failure occurs, it is important to quickly specify the cause stage and take countermeasure. Reviewing wafer level and composite lot level yield patterns has always been an effective way of identifying yield inhibitors and driving process improvement. This process is very time consuming and as such generally occurs only when the overall yield of a device has dropped significantly enough to warrant investigation. The automatic method of failure pattern extraction from fail bit map provides reduced time to analysis and facilitates yield enhancement. The automatic method of failure pattern extraction from fail bit map provides reduced time to analysis and facilitates yield enhancement. This paper describes the techniques to automatically classifies a failure pattern using a fail bit map.

  • A novel real-time actuator failure detection algorithm is developed in this paper. Actuator fails when the input to the structure is different from the commanded one. Previous research has shown that one error function can be formulated for each actuator through interaction matrix method. For output without noise, non-zero values in the actuator functions indicate the instant failure of the actuator regardless the working status of other actuators. In this paper, it is further demonstrated that the actuator's error function coefficients will be directly calculated from the healthy input of the examined actuator and all outputs. Hence, the need for structural information is no longer needed. This approach is termed as direct method. Experimental results from a NASA eight bay truss show the successful application of the direct method for isolating and identifying the real-time actuator failure. Further, it is shown that the developed method can be used for real-time sensor failure detection.

  • This paper presents a preventive maintenance model for determining the preventive replacement period of a system in which a failure rate is affected by the cumulative damage of fault and inspection. Especially, the failure rate function is considered to be a function of the cumulative damage of the fault and inspection time. Types of replacement considered are preventive replacement and failure replacement. Failure rate and expected cost function between replacement are derived. An optimal policy is obtained that minimizes the average cost per unit time for preventive replacement, failure replacement, inspection and repair.

  • The choice if constants that define a life testing procedure is considered in terms of the test termination time (censoring time) and the number of items to be tested subject to a given range of variance of the expected life time, where the failure time of life testing is exponentially distributed.

  • Failure data that has systematically managed for a long time has high reliability to an estimated volume. But since much cost and effort are needed to secure reliability data, data from overseas country is used in quantitative risk analysis in many workplaces. Reliability of the data that can be collected in workplaces can be dropped because of insufficient sample or lack of observation time. Therefore, estimated data is difficult to use as it is and environment and characteristic of the workplace cannot be reflected by using data from overseas country. So this study used Bayesian method that can be used reflecting both reliability data from overseas country and workplace failure data that has less samples. As a setting toward difficult situation that securing sufficient failure data cannot be achieved, we composed workplace failure data equivalent to mass observation time 20%(t=17000), 40%(t=24000), 60%(t=31000), 80%(t=38000) and IEEE data by using Bayesian method.

  • The industrial induction motor is widely used in the rotating electrical machine for the transmission of power. It is very reliable equipment, but it could lead to the loss of production and lift when failure occurs. Therefore, the failure data is acquired and analyzed by attaching an exclusive instrument to existing induction motor. However, these instruments could lead to side effects, increasing the production costs, because they are very expensive. The purpose of this study is the development of an induction motor bearing failure diagnosis system constructed using LabVIEW which can be supplied the kernelled function, process monitoring and current signature analysis. In addition, the availability and reasonability of the constructed system was examined for an induction motor with failure defects in outer raceway and ball bearing. From the results, it shows that failure diagnosis system constructed is useful for real-time monitoring with detection of bearing defects over the web.

  • Storage system often applies erasure codes to protect against disk failure and ensure system reliability and availability. Liberation code that is a type of coding scheme has been widely used in many storage systems because its encoding and modifying operations are efficient. However, it cannot effectively achieve fast recovery from single disk failure in storage systems, and has great influence on recovery performance as well as response time of client requests. To solve this problem, in this paper, we present HRSF, a Hybrid Recovery method for solving Single disk Failure. We present the optimal algorithm to accelerate failure recovery process. Theoretical analysis proves that our scheme consumes approximately 25% less amount of data read than the conventional method. In the evaluation, we perform extensive experiments by setting different number of disks and chunk sizes. The results show that HRSF outperforms conventional method in terms of the amount of data read and failure recovery time.

  • Medium-scale tests were conducted to measure and observe the strength and failure behavior of freshwater ice rubble. A custom box measuring $3.05m{\times}0.94m{\times}0.94m$, with Plexiglas walls was built so that failure mechanisms could be observed. Ice rubble beams of nominal thickness 50 cm were produced by placing randomly sized ice pieces into the box filled with water at its freezing temperature. After the specified consolidation time, ranging between 0.2 and 70.5 h, the ice rubble beam was deformed by pushing a platen vertically downwards though the center of the beam until failure. For consolidation times less than 4 h, the ice beam failed progressively and tended to fail by shearing on macroscopic scale. At times greater than 4 h the beam failed by bending. The change in failure behaviour has been attributed to the degree of bonding between ice blocks.

  • There are many situations arising in reliability engineering and biomedical science where failure of a subsystem increases the failure rate of other subsystem under shared load models. In this paper, the maximum likelihood estimates and the modified maximum likelihood estimates of mean time to failure and reliability function for shared load model with guarantee time are obtained by using censored system life data. Some illustrative examples are included.

  • The laboratorv model test was carried out to investigate the behavior of pore water pressure, the critical amount of rainfall for slope failure, the pattern of failure, and the variation of seepage line at the slope with the uniform material of embankment by changing the slope angles and rainfall intensities. The results were was summarised as follows : 1.At the beginning stage of rainfall, the negative pore pressure appeared at the surface of slope and the positive pore pressure at the deep parts. But, the negative one turned into the positive one as the rainfall continued and this rapidly increased about 50 to 100 minutes before the slope failure. 2.The heavier the rainfall intensity, the shorter the time, and the milder the slope, the longer the time took to reach the failure of slope. 3.As the angle of the slope became milder, the critical amount of rainfall for slope failure became greater. 4.Maximum pore water pressure was 10 to 40g/cm$^2$ at the toe of slope and 50 to 90g/cm$^2$at the deep parts. 5.In the respect of the pattern of slope failure, surface failure of slope occurred locally at the toe of slope at the A-soil and failure of slope by surface flow occurred gradually at the top part of slope at the B-soil. 6.As the rainfall continued and the saturation zone in the embankment was formed, the seepage line went rapidly up and also the time to reach the total collapse of slope took longer at the B-soil. 7.As the position of the seepage line went up and the strength parameter accordingly down, the safety factor was 2.108 at the A-soil and 2.150 at the B-soil when the slope occured toe failure. Minimum safety factor was rapidly down to 0.831 at the A-soil and to 0.936 at the B-soil when the slope collapsed totally at the top part of slope.
