  • Very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of aerospace components has emerged much attention due to their long service life. In this study, a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue testing (UFT) system has been developed by Mbrosiatec Co., Ltd. to study the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hourglass-shaped specimens have been investigated in the range from $10^6$ to $10^9$ cycles at room temperature under completely reversed R = -1 loading conditions,. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that failures occurred in the entire range up to the gigacycle regime, and the fractures have beenfound to be initiated from the surface, unlike in steels. However, it was found from the SEM microgprahs that microcracks transformed into intergranular fractures. Thus, it can be concluded from according to the results that this test method can be applicable to commercialized automotive and railroad parts that require high cycle fatigue strength.

  • In this study, the cutting characteristics of bulk metallic glass (BMG) cut using a computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathe were investigated for different insert tool materials and cutting speeds. The surface roughness, chip morphology, cutting forces, and tool wear during turning of $Zr_{50}Cu_{40}Al_{10}$ BMG alloy were examined. Four kinds of tool materials were used to cut an 8-mm-diameter BMG. The examination of the surface roughnesses of the BMG specimens machined at each cutting speed showed that the surface roughness became better as the cutting speed increased, and the tool materials also influenced the surface roughness. The chip morphology investigations showed that the unoxidized BMG chips had serrated curled chips with adiabatic shear bands, while the oxidized chips exhibited local melting and tangling rather than the usual spiral-shaped chips. The cutting force induced during machining of the Zr-based BMG was the largest for the TiN-WC tool, followed by the polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool. The cermet tool exerted the smallest cutting force.

So, it is essential to choose the optimum material f3r the process equipment handling molten salt. In this study, the corrosion behavior of Al-Y coated Haynes 263 in a molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O$ under oxidation atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for $72\~168$ hours. The corrosion rate of Al-Y coated Haynes 263 was low while that of bare Haynes 263 was high in a molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O$. Al-Y coated Haynes 263 improved the corrosion resistance better than bare Haynes 263 alloy. An Al oxide layer acts as a protective film which Prohibits Penetration of oxygen. Corrosion Products were formed $Li(Ni,Co)O_2$ and $LiTiO_2$ on bare Haynes 263, but $LiAlO_2,\;Li_5Fe_5O_8\;and\;LiTiO_2$ on Al-Y coated Haynes 263.

  • In the present study, design and forming process of fabricating titianium lightweight components are developed with applicaton of superplastic forming and diffusion bonding technology. SPF/DB(Superplastic forming/Diffusion bonding) technology is one of the advanced technologies to reduce production cost and weight and currently applied to aircrafts and space launchers in foreign countries. The present study constructs an analysis model to predict superplastic forming behavior of titanium alloy, which is well known for its resistance to deform. The experimental results show the forming of titanium lightweight sandwich structure is successfully performed from 3 sheets of Ti-6Al-4V. The results demonstrate that the developed technology to process design of SPF/DB by the finite element method can be applied to various types of components.

  • In present work, work-hardening behavior of TiCu-based bulk metallic glass composite with B2 particles has been studied by systemic structural and mechanical investigations. After yield, pronounced work-hardening of the alloy was clearly exhibited, which was mainly related to the martensitic transformation as well as the deformation twinning in B2 particles during deformation. At the early plastic deformation stage (work-hardening stage), the stress-induced martensitic transformation from B2 phase to B19' phase and deformation-induced twinning of B19' phase was preferentially occurred in the around interface areas between B2 phase and amorphous matrix by stress concentration. The higher hardness value was observed in vicinity of interface within the B2 particles which are probably connected with martensitic transformation and deformation twinning. This reveals that the work-hardening phenomenon of this bulk metallic glass composite is a result of the hardening of B2 particles embedded in amorphous matrix.

  • Smart material is used in various applications such as for glass frame, for medical instruments and for a part of sensors. Smart composite materials ran be applied to a part of aircraft and to the on-line monitoring system for industrial structures, using the shape memory effect. However, it is very difficult to simulate and analyze the shape memory effect in smart composites. In this paper, a two dimensional axisymmetric model was proposed to analyze the smart composite of one fiber and matrix using the finite element method(FEM). The finite element analysis was carried out in two renditions of the room temperature(293K) and a higher temperature (363K). The results we.e compared with the experimental results to confirm the validity of the analysis. In addition, the acoustic emission(AE) technique was used to study the microscopic damage behavior and the effect of pre-strains on TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite.

  • Arc melted Ti-5Bi alloy was oxidized by thermal oxidation method. In the present study free energy efficiency(${\eta}_e$) of titanium oxide electrode(TOE) was measured as a function of light intensity and light energy. Flat-band potential of TOE was measured as a function of the light intensity and the solution pH. The ${\eta}_e$ of TOE increased with the increase of light intensity and tight energy to maximum value of 3.2% and 13%, respectively, at $0.2W/cm^2$ and 4.0eV. The ${\eta}_e$ was strongly dependent on the magnitude of the bias voltage. Maximum value was found at 0.5V bias. Photocurrent of TOE was controlled by electron-hole pair generation in depletion layer. The flat-band potential of the illuminated TOE shifted to -0.065V/decade with increasing light intensity. With the decrease of pH of electrolyte, flat-band potential shifted to anodic direction. The experimental slope was in good agreement with the Nernstian value of 0.059V/pH decade.

  • Imaging of surfaces and structures by near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) has matured and is routinely used for studies ranging from biology to materials science. Of interest in this review paper is a versatility of modified or multi-functional NSOM (mf-NSOM) to enable high resolution imaging in several modes: (1) Concurrent fluorescence and Topographical Imaging (gases) (2) Microspectroscopy (gases) (3) Concurrent Scanning Electrochemical and Topographical Imaging (SECM) (liquids) (4) Concurrent Photoelectrochemical and Topographical Imaging (PEM) (liquids) The present study will summarize some of the recent advances in mf-NSOM work confirmed and supported by the results from several other imaging techniques of optical, fluorescence, electron and electrochemical microscopy. The studies are directed at providing local information on pitting precursor sites and vulnerable areas on metal and semiconductor surfaces, and at reactive sites on heterogeneous, catalytic substrates, especially on Al 2024 alloy and polycrystalline Ti. In addition, we will introduce some results related to the laser-induced nanometal (Ag) synthesis using mf-NSOM.

  • The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. So, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. In this study, corrosion behavior of Inconel 713LC, Inconel MA 754, Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 in the molten salt $LiCl-Li_2O$ under an oxidizing atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 72~216 hrs. Inconel 713LC alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys. Corrosion products of Inconel 713LC were $Cr_2O_3$, $NiCr_2O_4$ and NiO, and those of Inconel MA 754 were $Cr_2O_3$ and $Li_2Ni_8O_{10}$ while $Cr_2O_3$, $LiFeO_2$, $(Cr,Ti)_2O_3$ and $Li_2Ni_8O_{10}$ were produced from Nimonic 80A. Also, corrosion products of Nimonic 90 were found to be $Cr_2O_3$, $(Cr,Ti)_2O_3$, $LiAlO_2$ and $CoCr_2O_4$. Inconel 713LC showed local corrosion behavior and Inconel MA 754, Nimonic 80A, Nimonic 90 showed uniform corrosion behavior.
