The Fluidity of the Recycled Thermoplastic Elastomer on the Injection Molding process (사출성형공정에서 엘라스토머 재생재의 유동성)

  • In recent, recycling of plastic material has became a major issue due to the landfills and environmental problem. This study investigated fluidity of thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV), which is for automobile component parts such as weather strip in order to replace ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM). So, using the spiral flow test mold and panel cover mold, we conducted an experiment on fluidity of TPV with injection molding. As results of injection molding experiment, the recycled TPV's flow length was a little bit longer than virgin TPV and a case of panel cover, the filled weight was almost same quantity.

Mechanical Properties and Morphology of the Recycled Thermoplastic Elastomer Molding (재생 엘라스토머 수지의 기계적 물성과 모폴로지)

  • Automotive weather strip should have good weather ability, sealability, durability, etc. to perform its duty as body sealing for vehicles under different harsh environments. Due to its comprehensive properties, thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV) is widely employed in weather strip as alternative for ethylene propylene diene rubber(EPDM). In this study, the influences of the recycled TPV on the tensile strength and hardness were investigated. As results of the injection molding experiment, the recycled TPV's tensile strength and hardness were higher than the virgin TPV and recycled TPV's extension was improve. The morphology showed that recycled TPV's rubber particles became smaller than virgin TPV's rubber particles.

  • These days, recycling of plastic material has become a major issue due to the landfills and environmental problem.   • It was attempted to develop an auto part by over molding injection mold that produces precision products in high productivity with use of an eco-friendly TPE substitute material for NBR. NBR is currently used in motor gear cover, one of the key parts in motor module for auto doors. Gear cover is composed of plastics and rubber mostly today, which requires a two (2) step process for production using two presses of different types. A hot press is used at this time for forming the rubber, which has drawback of requiring a rather long forming time of 400 seconds for one forming process. Even though this difficulty is overcome by reducing production time through employment of multi-cavity molds, time for forming process must be shortened for improvement of the productivity eventually, and the existing method of insert injection for products that have been formed with plastic material must be outgrown. In this point of view, over molding injection using TPE has a big advantage. Forming time is shortened to 54 seconds, and working the two (2) processes in series by one (1) press could solve the durability problem caused by deflection of the plastics, not to mention shortening the process time. Enhancement of productivity by almost 80% and improvement in the accuracy of the product could thus be achieved.

  • Compounding, using such thermoplastic elastomer as styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) blended with polypropylene(PP), oil, and other ingredients, was studied to develop a new material with excellent impact resistance and resilience for the replacement of environmentally toxic PVC sheet. Hardness decreased linearly with oil content in the SEBS/oil blend, and the tensile strength increased with PP content whereas elongation showed no effects over 50 phr of PP in SEBS/oil/PP blend. In the practical SEBS composition, proposed to replace the PVC sheet material, tensile and tear strength, as well as hardness, increased proportionally with PP content, while melt index decreased.

  • For solving the environmental problem of the waste EPDM and for new TPE blend materials, we developed a new kind of TPE material using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. To improve the mechanical properties of TPE material such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus of the blend, PP and waste EPDM powder were blended with different screw configurations. The mechanical properties of the blends and morphology of the TPE were investigated. As the number of kneading disc and left-handed screw element increased, dynamic vulcanization of the material was increased because the shear stress and residence time of blends increased.

A Review on IPP/Elastomer/Nanofiller Composites for the Possibility of Use as Power Cable Insulations (동일배열 폴리프로필렌/엘라스토머/나노충전제 복합체의 전력케이블 절연체로서의 사용 가능성에 대한 문헌적 고찰)

  • For use as recyclable power cable insulations without dielectric oil, technology trends of IPP based thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer(TPO) nanocomposites were reviewed. In 2010 research results of IPP nanocomposite dielectrics for power capacitors showed promising high voltage properties except dielectric loss. Research of IPP based TPO nanocomposites for automotive exterior parts revealed considerable improvements of mechanical properties including impact strength, especially minimization of compatibilizer content, the origin of dielectric loss. A study on electrical properties of IPP based TPO nanocomposites containing a few weight percent of nanofillers for power cable insulations is suggested.

  • A new type of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) based on EPDM ionomer as an elastomer and polyamide-6 as a reinforcing crystalline polymer was prepared and the thermal properties of TPEs were investigated. Especially effects of neutralization of maleated EPDM (MA-EPDM) to prepare EPDM ionomer with zinc oxide and the content of polyamide-6 on the thermal properties of the blends were investigated. Both the neutralization and blending were carried out employing a twin screw extruder. It was found that the neutralization of MA-EPDM results in the increase of cooling crystallization temperatures. Polyamide-6 plays the role of reinforcing filler in the blends due to the high crystallinity. Fine dispesion of polyamide-6 in the blends was confirmed and attributed to the imide formation between the maleic anhydride of MA-EPDM and amine group of polyamide-6. TPEs based on EPDM ionomer/Polyamide-6 blends showed balanced mechanical properties with improvement in heat resistance.

Preparation and Property of POSS-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Filler and Polyamide Thermoplastic Elastomer (PA-TPE)/POSS Nanocomposite (POSS 기반 유-무기 하이브리드 충전제와 폴리아미드계 TPE로 이루어진 나노복합체의 제조 및 특성)

  • Commercially available polyamide thermoplastic elastomer (PA-TPE) was blended with hybrid filler which was prepared by means of the reaction between polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) containing amine group and toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-caprolactam (CL) to explore the effect of blending the hybrid filler with the TPE. The chemical structure of the filler was identified by using FTIR and $^1H$ NMR. The composites, PA-TPE/POSS-(TDI+CL), which were the blends of TDI+CL modified POSS filler and PA-TPE up to 7 wt%, showed better elastic recovery delivered from lower tension setting compared to the PA-TPE and the PA-TPE/octaphenyl POSS blend. In addition the tensile strength and the initial modulus increased with increasing the hybrid filled content. Consequently it was assumed that the POSS-(TDI+CL) filler was a suitable material for enhancing strength and modulus without loss of elastic properties for the original PA-TPE.
