  • In order to increase the efficiency of thermoelectric refrigerators using the Peltier effect, it is necessary to optimize the distribution of the flow of cold air from the fan. In this study, the flow flowing upwards and downwards while changing the area of the flow path was visualized using the PIV technique for the control of cold air in a thermoelectric refrigerator. From these results, the flow rate according to the change in the area of the flow path was confirmed, and design criteria for optimizing the distribution of cold air flowing to the top and bottom of the refrigerator were suggested.

  • The steady three-dimensional numerical analysis on the thermal flow using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the air cooling effect of a cooler on the cabin for a commercial vehicle. Here, the heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler uses the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In consequence, the air system resistance of a cooler within the cabin is about 12.1 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a virtual cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The discharging air temperature of a cooler is about $14{\sim}15^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the air cooling temperature difference obtained under the outdoor cabin temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ shows about $7{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ in a driver resting space and about $9{\sim}14^{\circ}C$ in the front of a driver's seat including the space of a driver's foot.

  • The thermoelectric Seebeck and Peltier effects of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) quantum dot nanodevice are investigated, taking into consideration a certain value of applied tensile strain and induced ac-field with frequency in the terahertz (THz) range. This device is modeled as a SWCNT quantum dot connected to metallic leads. These two metallic leads operate as a source and a drain. In this three-terminal device, the conducting substance is the gate electrode. Another metallic gate is used to govern the electrostatics and the switching of the carbon nanotube channel. The substances at the carbon nanotube quantum dot/metal contact are controlled by the back gate. Results show that both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients have random oscillation as a function of gate voltage in the Coulomb blockade regime for all types of SWCNT quantum dots. Also, the values of both the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are enhanced, mainly due to the induced tensile strain. Results show that the three types of SWCNT quantum dot are good thermoelectric nanodevices for energy harvesting (Seebeck effect) and good coolers for nanoelectronic devices (Peltier effect).

  • Power factor improvement at high temperatures has been a major research topic for the development of skutterudite thermoelectric materials. Here, we attempted to optimize the process parameters for manufacturing skutterudite materials, especially for p-type systems. We focused on the effect of aging time variation to maximize the high-temperature performance of the Ce-filled Fe3CoSb12 skutterudite system. The optimized aging time was concluded to be a key parameter for the formation of single-phase nanostructures in this p-type skutterudite system. The optimized condition was effective in reducing the bipolar effect at high temperature ranges by increasing the carrier concentration in the p-type system. To confirm the conclusions, the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor were measured. The results matched well with the microstructure and with those of an XRD analysis performed for the system.

  • The effect of an AlN additive on the thermoelectric properties of SiC ceramics was studied. Porous SiC ceramics with 48-54% relative density were fabricated by sintering the pressed ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder compacts with AlN at $2100-2200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in an Ar atmosphere. In the undoped specimens, the Seebeck coefficients were positive (p-type semiconducting) possibly due to a dominant effect of the acceptor impurities (Al, Fe) contained in the starting powder. With AlN addition, the reverse phase transformation of 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC was observed during the sintering process. The electrical conductivity of the AlN doped specimen was larger than that of the undoped specimen under the same conditions, which might be due to a reverse phase trans-formation. The Seebeck coefficient of the AlN doped specimen was also larger than that of the undoped specimen. The density of specimen and the amount of addition had significant effects on the thermoelectric properties.

  • Temperature difference between two plates occurs when a current is passed though two semi-conductors that are connected each other at two junctions. The current drives a transfer of heat from one junction to the other. In this study, the thermoelectric module based on th "Peltier effect" was made by combing fullerene and polyaniline. Continuous temperature measurements on both surfaces were performed at room temperature($25.4^{\circ}C$) by an infrared non-contact thermometer. The results showed that cool ing effect of $2.2^{\circ}C$ was attained by 30 seconds, after which the effect was continuously vanished mainly due to electro decomposition.

  • Thermoelectric generator, which is known as using Seebeck effect, have been widely applied in many industrial parts, for instance, from submarine to equipments capable of producing hot or cooling water. Its usefulness was verified in terms of producing electric power using temperature difference and vice versa. Application on thermoelectric generator has been mainly forced on exhaust gas of automotive engine so far. In this study, the possibility was investigated whether electric power could be produced by using cooling water in automotive engine. As the result, it showed that electric power had differences depending on shapes of power auxiliary apparatus and, in this experiment, maximum of electric power was 1.5 voltage.

  • The effective mean free path model was adopted to examine the thickness effect on the thermoelectric properties of flash-evaporated n-type $Bi_2Te_{2.4}Se_{0.6}$ thin films. Annealing effects on the electron concentration and mobility were also studied, and their variations were analyzed in conjunction with antisite defects. Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity versus inverse thickness showed a linear relationship, and the mean free path was found to be $5120\AA$ Electron mobility was increased by annealing treatment and electron concentration was decreased considerably due to reduction of antisite defects, so that electrical conductivity was decreased and Seebeck coefficient was increased. When annealed at 473k for 1 hour, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were $-200\;\mu V/k\;and\;510\omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, the thermoelectric power factor was improved to be $20\times10^{-4}\;W/(mK^2)$.

  • In this study, a multi-layer cascade (MLC) electrical array configuration method for thermoelectric generator consisting of plural number of thermoelectric modules (TEMs) was proposed to reduce mismatch loss caused by temperature maldistribution on the surfaces of the TEMs. To validate the effect of MLC on the mismatch loss reduction, a numerical model capable of reflecting multi-physics phenomena occuring in the TEMs was developed. MLC can be employed by placing a group of TEMs experiencing relatively low temperature differences in an electric layer with more electrical branches while locating a group of TEMs experiencing relatively high temperature differences in an electric layer with less electrical branches. The TEMs were classified using the temperature distribution obtained by the numerical model. A MLC with an optimal electrical branch ratio showed a 96.5% of electric power generation compared to an ideal case.
