  • The surface microtopography of pyrophyllite collected from the Gussi deposit, Korea was observed by mean of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with the gold decoration technique. As results, closed step patterns with malformed circular islands were characteristically observed on the (001) surface of pyrophyllite, contrasting with spiral step patterns common in illite and kaolinite. Gussi pyrophyllite was likely crystallized from hydrothermal solution of higher temperature and/or higher supersaturation than those of other clay minerals. Comparing with micro-topographies of pyrophyllite from the Shokozan and the Uku deposits, southwest Japan, growth mechanism of Gussi pyrophyllite is almost equivalent to those from the Shokozan and the Uku deposits.

  • We investigated the bonding interfaces of directly-bonded Si-Si and $Si-Sio_{2}$/Si wafer pairs. By the angle lapping-delineation, anisotropic etching, and (FIR)-TEM observation methods, we studied on the interface defects and the transient region originated from the interface stress, the various types of voids, the formation and stability of interfacial oxide. We also compared the interface image of the bonded $Si-Sio_{2}$ with that of a typically grown $Si-Sio_{2}$.

  • Multiconductor transmission line(MTL) equations are solved by FDTD method to examine the coupling between incident electromagnetic fields and multiconductor transmission lines. The measurement of induced voltages on UTP Category 5 and STP Category 5 cables which are used as LAN cables is carried out using a TEM cell where uniform and strong TEM fields can be established. The comparison between measured and simulated results shows good agreement. It is also found that grounding of shield foil at both terminations and small grounding resistance give good shielding effects for STP Category 5.

  • Ni coated $Al_2O_3$ composite was successfully Prepared by the electroless deposition Process. The average size of Ni particles coated on the $Al_2O_3$ matrix powder was about 20 nm. It was hard to find any reaction compound as an impurity at interface between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni particles after sintering. The characterization of microstructure crystal structure and fracture behavior of the sintered body were investigated using XRD, TEM and Victors hardness tester, and compared with those of the sintered $Al_2O_3$ monolithic body. Many dislocations were observed in the Ni phase due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2O_3$ and Ni phase, and no observed microcracks at their $Al_2O_3$ and Ni interface. In the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite, the main fracture mode showed a mixed fracture with intergranular and transgranuluar type having some ,surface roughness. The fracture toughness was slightly increased due to the plastic deformation mechanism of Ni phase in the $Al_2O_3$/Ni composite.

  • Safety management paradigm which against human errors in aviation industry is now changing from the follow-up measures after accident in the past to systematic approach that a forecast the hazards and improve the working system of the group to prevent accidents. As human factors are based on the man's specific psychological traits, it takes much time and efforts to prepare the preventive measures. That's why aviation industry is interested in the accident-prevent measurements against human errors. In this thesis, therefore, we are going to introduce the efforts that aviation organizations have tried and recommend management systems and discuss the suggestive facts. At first, we discussed introduction of HFACS which is the systematic accidents-classification system related to human errors in the aviation organization and countermeasure in the aspects of management, technology/engineering, education training. We described about FOQA, LOSA, CRM/TEM, aviation safety information DB in the aspect of management, and explained safety technologies that prevent human errors or avoid technologically when emergency occurs in the aspect of technology/engineering. In the aspect of education training, we explained the application plan about safety programs(LOFT/Simulator use, CRM/TEM application etc).

  • The effects of Nb and Cr addition on the microstructure, corrosion and oxide characteristics of Zr based alloys were investigated. The corrosion tests were performed in a pressurized water reactor simulated-loop system at $360^{\circ}C$. The microstructures were examined using OM and TEM, and the oxide properties were characterized by low-angle X-ray diffraction and TEM. The corrosion test results up to 360 days revealed that the corrosion rates were considerably affected by Cr content but not Nb content. The corrosion resistance of the Zr-xNb-0.1Sn-yCr quaternary alloys was improved by an increasing Nb/Cr ratio. The crystal structure of the precipitates was affected by a variation of the Nb/Cr ratio. The Zr-Nb beta-enriched precipitates were mainly formed in the high Nb/Cr ratio alloy while $Zr(NbCr)_2$ precipitates were frequently observed in the low Nb/Cr ratio alloy. The studies of oxide characteristics revealed that the corrosion resistance was related to the crystal structure of the precipitate.

  • In order to measure steel corrosion in mortar by a transient electro-magnetic (TEM) Method, the development of the sensors have been studied. The sensors were made of enamelled wire with diameter of 0.25mm and Acril. The sensor configuration was used as a coincident loop type. The secondary electro motive force(EMF) was measured with SIROTEM III. The accelerator was equipped with the SIROTEM III. The accelerator permits the transmitter to turn off approximately 10~15 times faster than normal. The high resolution time series used for very shallow or high resistivity investigation was selected. The steels were embedded in mortar which were made from sand : cement : water ratio of 2 : 1: 0.5. The mortar specimen was 50cm long, 20cm wide and 10cm thick. To investigate steel corrosion in mortar, the sensors used were with 2$\times$2$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$), 3$\times$3$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$) and 6$\times$6$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$). The obtained result obtained showed that the sensor 8(6$\times$6$cm^2$, 6$\Omega$) was the proper sensor for the measurement of steel corrosion in mortar.

  • A high voltage pulse generator was fabricated to radiate ultrawide band electromagnetic pulse. A coaxial type of Blumlein pulse forming line is employed to produce a pulse of high voltage (>300 kV) and short pulse duration (~5 ns). A helical strip/wire type of air-cored pulse transformer was used to charge the Blumlein pulse forming line up to more than 300 kV. A peaking switch is essential to make the pulse rise time as fast as possible. Typically, the rise time is ~500 ps. The output pulse of the generator is radiated into air through an exponentially tapered TEM horn antenna. The electric field intensity of a radiated pulse was measured as a function of the distance from the transmitting horn as well as the output voltage of the peaking switch. The peak-to-peak value of the electric field intensity at 10 m from the TEM antenna was~100 kV/m.

  • We prepare ZnO nanoparticles by environmentally friendly synthesis using Cyathea nilgiriensis leaf extract. Various phytochemical constituents are identified through the assessment of ethanolic extract of plant Cyathea nilgiriensis holttum by GC-MS analysis. The formation of ZnO nanoparticles is confirmed by FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, SAED and PSA analysis. TEM observation reveals that the biosynthesized ZnO nanopowder has a hexagonal structure. The calculated average crystallite size from the high intense plane of (1 0 1) is 29.11 nm. The particle size, determined by TEM analysis, is in good agreement with that obtained by XRD analysis. We confirm the formation of biomolecules in plant extract by FT-IR analysis and propose a possible formation mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles. Disc diffusion method is used for the analyses of antimicrobial activity of ZnO nanoparticles. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles exhibit antimicrobial effect in disc diffusion experiments. The biosynthesized ZnO nanoparticles display good antibacterial performance against B. subtilis (Gram-positive bacteria) and K. pneumonia (Gram-negative bacteria). Bio-synthesized nanoparticles using green method are found to possess good antimicrobial performance.
