  • This paper uses a new method to improve the performance criterion of an active suspension car. The used control strategy is based on robust H$_{\infty}$ control theory taking into consideration the chasis flexibility. It will be shown that the modeling errors can be lumped into an unstructured uncertainty and the robust controller designed in the presence of these perturbations could maintain the stability and performance even for the controlled true system..

  • The graphene oxides (GOs) were tested as a fluorescent quencher in the field of DNA-diagnostics. The various suspensions of GO nanoplates were prepared by changing the synthesis conditions. The suspensions were stable for at least 6 weeks by differing degrees of functionalization of various oxygen-containing groups of atoms. Depending on the properties of GO nanoplates, their fluorescent quenching abilities, which were determined by the amount of the tagged immobilized oligonucleotide, were also changed. GO suspension synthesized at $75^{\circ}C$ of reaction mixture showed the fluorescent quenching of 16.39 nmol/mg, which would be a potential substitution of molecular fluorescent quencher in test-systems for DNA-diagnostics.

  • Electromagnetic Suspension(EMS) System produces no noise, friction and heat through non-contacting operation Therefore, the applicable device using EMS system has a lot of attraction in case of the high-speed and non-contacting transmission EMS with nonlinear properties requires a precise airgap position control and stable kinematics characteristics under the disturbances, In this study, the nonlinear system was linearized by a Nonlinear Feedback Lineariztion(NFL) method. The NFL method requires that the modelling should be exact, and the state variables should be measured and a rapidly operating controller be necessary on account of a heavy data calculating In the experiments. the ideal control characteristics of the NFL was acquired through simulation at first. then the characteristics of the actual system were compared with those of simulation. In addition, the results by NFL were examined and analysed considering the characteristics of the PID control. The Control by NFL shows much stable control characteristics than the PID control. Whereas, the steady state errors occur for various disturbances. hence a robust control design is remained for a further study.

  • Catwalk structures are temporary walk ways for erection of main cables in suspension bridge. The aerodynamic characteristics of the catwalk structures are not well studied even though the catwalk structures are sensitive to wind action because of its flexibility. Present study demonstrates technical results obtained from wind tunnel tests of various catwalk structures. To obtain the aerostatic force coefficients of the floor system of catwalk, 1/14 and 1/4 scaled partial rigid models were fabricated and tested at the wind tunnel. In order to investigate the Reynolds number effects, the aerostatic force coefficients were measured at various wind velocities ranged from 5m/s to 30m/s. The test results revealed that the Reynolds number effects on aerostatic coefficients were not significant for the catwalk floor systems. An empirical equation for aerostatic force coefficients of catwalk are proposed based on the measured results.

  • In the case of mechanical control systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete mechanical control system models and used for system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, a moment-matching based model order reduction (MOR) which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process is considered to study the dynamic responses of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

  • Feeding biological cells one by one is the key point in the manipulation of cells. The conventional valve systems have many difficulties in feeding cells one by one, because they shut the whole flow of fluids when they are closed and have possibilities of breaking the fragile cells. They need some other equipments for continuous supply of suspension and to protect the cells. We design a check valve for feeding biological cells one by one using polyimide all the silicon substrate. The cells are fed by hydraulic pressure through the isotropically etched cavity. When the suspension flows continuously along the channel the valve is bent by hydraulic pressure and a cell is fed to the outlet. We have studied a cell fusion device fabricated with polyimide and electroplating. If the designed check valve is located in front of the cell fusion device it is helpful to fuse two different kinds of cells.

  • Plant cell culture is emerging to express bioactive foreign proteins because it has several advantages in that it is safe, economical, genetically stable and eukaryotic expression system comparing with other expression systems. However several limitations such as slow growth rate, low expression level and lack of well established down stream process need to be answered. As a preliminary approach to produce the immunologically interested molecules through the plant cell culture, we tested if granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factors (GM-CSFs) from both murine (mGM-CSF) and human (hGM-CSF) are produced as a biologically active form through plant cell culture. The murine and human GM-CSF genes were cloned into the plant expression vector, pBI121, and Ti-plasmid mediated transformation of tobacco leaves was conducted using Agrobacterium tumefaciens harboring both recombinant GM-CSF (rGM-CSF) genes. Cell suspension culture was established from the leaf-derived calli of transgenic tobacco plant. Northern blot analysis indicated the expression of the introduced mGM-CSF gene in both transgenic plant and cell suspension cultures. In addition, the biological activities of both murine and human GM-CSF from plant cell culture were confirmed by measuring the proliferation of the GM-CSF dependent FDC-PI and TF-1 cells, respectively.

  • In this paper an asymmetric hydraulic actuator which consists of single acting cylinder and servo valve is modeled for a quarter car active suspension system. This model regards the force as an internal state rather than a control input. The control input of the model is the sum of oil flows that pass through the valve's orifices. The resulting dynamic equation in the state space ap-pears a feedback connection of a nominal linear time in-variant term with a nonlinear bounded uncertain block. Since this model makes it possible to eliminate the force control phase, analysis and controller design are made straightforward and simple. Well known LQR method is then applied. Simulation and test rig experiment show the effectiveness of this approach in modeling and control.

  • A passive control using flaps will be an alternative solution for flutter stability and buffeting response of a long suspension bridge. This method not only enables a lightweight economic stiffening girder without an additional stiffness for aerodynamic stability but also avoid the problems from the malfunctions of control systems and energy supply system of an active control by winglets and flaps. A time domain approach for predicting the coupled flutter and buffeting response of bridge deck with flaps is investigated. First, the flutter derivatives of bridge deck and flaps are found by experiment. Next, the derivation of time domain model of self-excited forces and control forces of sectional model is reported by using the rational function approximation. Finally, the effectiveness of passive flap control is investigated by the numerical simulation. The results show that the passive control by using flaps can increase the flutter speed and decrease the buffeting response. The experiment results are matched with numerical ones.
