The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' perceptions of biotechnology. Participants in this study were 9th and 10th grade students who were enrolled in high schools in Gyeonggi Province. The survey instrument used in this study was a 26-item questionnaire that was designed to measure students' perceptions regarding biotechnology. The study revealed that students' perceptions were positive toward the use of biotechnology on biological objects such as plant, grain and microbes. However, their perceptions were negative toward the use of biotechnology on humans and animals. Male students' perceptions were more positive than female students and there were significant differences between male and female students(p<.01). The study also revealed that male and female students had positive perceptions about the use of biotechnology in the development of beneficial products. However, male students' perceptions were more positive than female students(p<.01). Female students' perceptions were slightly more negative than males and they indicated a measure of caution in the development of beneficial products using biotechnology. Regarding the reliability of biotechnological information acquired from food companies, TV broadcasters, and entertainers, male and female students tended to be highly negative. Students perceived that environmental, religious and ethical issues did not affect the use of biotechnology when asked the effect of these factors on the use of biotechnology. They perceived that food safety and genetic factors of microbes did affect the use of biotechnology. Thus, the study findings suggest that teaching and learning strategies based on the differences of perceptions between male and female students of this study be established and the use of media, development of teaching method and materials be promoted in order to enhance student's performance in environmental education.

Adopting the Tools of Liberalism and Clash of Civilizations theories of international relations, this study examines the perceptions of 25,406 Arabs in 11 Arab countries as expressed in an Arab Barometer survey exploring their perceptions of violence against the United States (US), American citizens as "good," President Donald Trump's foreign policy in the Middle East, increasing economic relations with the US, and welcoming American foreign aid. As aspects of the Clash of Civilizations theory, this study examines religiosity, religious ritual practices, and political Islam and, as aspects of liberalism, this study explores the roles of online media as well as perceptions about US foreign aid in the prediction of the criterion variables. The findings suggest that religious indicators, and aspects of the Clash of Civilizations generally, were negative predictors of the perceptions, while social media and motivations for US foreign aid as aspects of liberalism, positively predicted the perceptions. The study discusses the results in relation to implications for policy makers.
Science contest is one of the important programs of extracurricular school science activities which give various experience for science learning. In order to understand teachers' perceptions on science contests in elementary school, this study investigated teachers' awareness of science contests, perceptions and difficulties in carrying out science contests in each school, their perceptions on the preparing process of statewide science contest, and the preference of the types of preliminary science contests. 196 teachers were responded to survey, and 8 teachers were interviewed. The results showed that elementary teachers were aware of various science contests through their in-school experiences. The main difficulties of teacher on science contests was lack of professionalism on science and science contests. While teachers preferred the preliminary round of contest by contest's host to the preliminaries of science contest in each school. They also worried about the intimidation of science month's festival in schools. Based on the understanding of the teachers' perceptions on science contests, educational implications were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate engineering professors' perceptions on the key competencies for engineering students (i.e. creativity, problem solving, designing, field application, etc.) and their instructional efforts to promote the competencies. The guiding research questions included 1) to what extent engineering professors perceived the key competencies as the important qualification that engineering students should obtain in college, 2) to what extent the professors put in a great deal of effort to promote such competencies in their teaching, and 3) how their perceptions on the key competencies correlated with their instructional practice. Two hundred fifteen engineering professors affiliated to diverse fields voluntarily participated in the study and filled out 5 point-Likert scale survey items. In results, despite of some range of variation on their perceptions according to the fields, most of the engineering professors highly valued the four key competencies. However, compared to the perceptions, engineering professors in some engineering fields relatively less focused on promoting the competencies in their teaching practice.
This research explores the public's perceptions of the appropriateness of the use of robots in museums and galleries. Using data from an international survey of 1589 participants, the data show that the perceived appropriateness of robot implementation in museums and galleries is driven largely by perceptions of the usefulness and emotional skills of robotic technologies, and their perceived advantages compared to human employees. Additionally, the findings suggest that the general attitudes towards service robots in tourism shape the attitudes towards robots in museums and galleries in particular. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the demographic characteristics of visitors are not related to their perceptions of robots in museums and galleries.
This study explored elementary teachers' perceptions on the essential features of science inquiry, the appropriateness of inquiry activities to science inquiry, and the essential features of inquiry by inquiry activities. 85 elementary teachers' perceptions were investigated using Likert scale survey, and 7 teachers were interviewed. The results are as follows. First, the features that elementary teachers perceived the most essential were 'Engaging students in evaluating their explanations in light of alternative explanations' and 'Engaging students in communicating and justifying their explanations'. Second, The inquiry activities that teachers thought the most appropriate to science inquiry were 'experiment' and 'project'. On the other hand, the perceptions on 'discussion' and 'field trip' were relatively low. Third, the inquiry activity that showed the highest mean score of five essential features of inquiry was 'experiment' while the mean score of 'field trip' was the lowest. Educational implications about the science inquiry were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the family care-givers' perceptions of welfare facility for the elderly people with dementia, to analyze the related variables, and to provide the suggestions from the perspectives of the well-being of family care-givers. The survey was done using questionnaires in 1999, and the subjects were 198 primary care-givers for senile dementia patients. Frequency distribution, mean, t-test, and one way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The major findings of this study were as follows: The family care-givers' perceptions of the welfare facility for elderly people with dementia was relatively low. The variables associated were sex, education level, occupation and relationship with the demented elderly. The conclusion suggested from this study was that the social welfare facilities and services were necessary for both the demented elderly people themselves and their family care-givers.

This paper aims to reach the perceptions, ideas and intentions of the higher education adolescences on the effects of technological innovations over interrelation/communication between individuals. While advances in technology commonly works for the welfare and benefit of humankind, paradoxically in some instances could have negative outcomes on interrelations among individuals, minimizing face-to-face communication. The perceptions, so ideas of the individuals on the matter could differ depending on their age, gender, race and the culture beyond their relative intimacy and closeness to ICT tools. In order to penetrate the basic initiatives leading the perceptions of adolescents on the effects of technological improvements on human interrelations/ communication, a survey is conducted with 157 students in high education consisting of Asian, African, Cypriot, Turkish nationals. Results indicate that participants use technological tools for communication which lessens their face-to-face interaction. However they prefer social media more than face-to-face communication during conflict or undesirable situations.
The purpose of this study was to explore the elementary students' perceptions of Earth systems and environmental issues. A survey was conducted to determine the students' perceptions on the following aveas: (1) the concepts of certainty and tangibility, (2) self-reported knowledge level, (3) perceived danger level of selected eight Earth systems and environmental issues, and (4) their primary information source on these issues. Results indicated that ozone hole, acid rain, El $Ni\widetilde{n}o$, and global warming were identified by the students as uncertain and intangible issues. Perceived certainty and perceived tangibility were highly positively correlated with self-reported knowledge compared to other relationships. The results also showed that learning from school was the most frequent information source for environmental issues. The second most frequently used source of information was television among several mass media sources. It is hoped that this study contributes to understanding the elementary school students' perceptions toward the selected Earth systems and environmental issues.

Background: Recently, there have been various developments in medical service robots (MSRs). However, few studies have examined the perceptions of those who use it. The purpose of this study is to identify user perceptions of MSRs. Methods: We conducted a survey of 320 patients, doctors, and nurses. The contents of the survey were organized as follows: external appearances, perceptions, expected utilization, possible safety accidents, and awareness of their responsibilities. Statistical analyses were performed using t-test, chi-square test, and analysis of variance. Results: The most preferred appearance was the animal type, with a screen. The overall average score of positive questions was 3.64±0.98 of 5 points and that of negative questions was 3.24±0.99. Thus, the results revealed that the participants had positive perceptions of MSR. The overall average of all expected utilization was 4.05±0.84. The most expected utilization was to guide hospital facilities. The most worrisome accident was exposure to personal information. Moreover, participants thought that the overall responsibility of the robot user (hospital) was greater than that of the robot manufacturer in the case of safety accidents. Conclusion: The perceptions of MSRs used in hospital wards were positive, and the overall expected utilization was high. It is necessary to recognize safety accidents for such robots, and sufficient attention is required when developing and manufacturing robots.
