A Study on PU Strip Quality Improvement through a Change of Primer-process for SURION Main Rotor Blade (수리온 주로터 블레이드 프라이머 공정변경을 통한 PU Strip 품질 향상에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: When the SURION Aircraft operated in the fields, cracks are found in PU(polyurethane) Strip on main rotor blade. This study has been conducted to explain PU(polyurethane) Strip crack phenomenon of SURION main rotor blade and to propose useful solution of it by experimental method. Methods: This study considered a lot of factor because the SURION is operated at severe environment. This study investigated the influence of temperature, thermal shock, paint and primer process, PU Strip material, primer material. Results: The results of this study are as follows; The primer process was most excellent influence. The Application of primer having a brittleness caused by a crack of PU Strip. Other factors have influenced on the PU Strip, but they can not be controlled because they are related to the SURION's operating environment. Conclusion: The Quality of PU Strip on SURION main rotor blade was improved through removing the primer process. Finally, the reliability of main rotor blade was guaranteed through improving the quality of PU Strip.

  • Systems Engineering application focused on requirement definition and management for SURION System Development Project is described in this paper. To perform the development process effectively based on systems engineering processes; Requirements Definition, Design Review, Configuration Management, Quality Assurance, Data Management, are applied in this project. In this processes, the Stakeholder's Requirements are transferred to Specifications verified with design reviews, prototyping inspections, and integration tests. All engineering data, especially verification plan & results are recorded, and traced to each requirements of system specification in Surion database. Therefore, it could be assured that all requirements of specification are evaluated and verified successfully in Surion Project.

  • The System Engineering(SE) and the Earned Value Management System(EVMS), as parts of the scientific project management methodology, have been applied to Surion Helicopter R&D Program. The concept and application process of SE methodology, requirements management and applications output by DOORS program are described in this study. The concept and application process of EVMS, analysis results of schedule/cost variance for Surion RF equipment are also discussed in this study. Though the Surion R&D program is still on-going, it is found that the measures of effectiveness of SE and EVMS applications are verified.

  • For operating military aircraft, military certificate of airworthiness (MCA) must be obtained from military authority. Among procedures of general airworthiness certification, there is a military type certification process that aircraft design complies with military airworthiness certification criteria. The Surion is the first military rotorcraft which has obtained military type certificate, production validation and airworthiness certificate in Korea, and the Surion derivatives for special mission are being operated for government services. Based on Aviation Safety Act, in order to operate the Surion derivatives (military aircraft) for special purpose (such as emergency patient transportation and firefighting), the issuance of special airworthiness certificates was needed from civil airworthiness authority, and the restricted category type certification (RTC) is one of design approvals for special airworthiness certification to be streamlined. This study discussed the procedures for acquiring RTC for special purpose operation of the Surion derivatives classified as military derived aircraft, and suggested procedural ideas to improve Korean RTC system.

A Study on the Parameters for Icing Airworthiness Flight Tests of Surion Military Helicopter (수리온 군용헬기의 결빙 감항인증 비행시험을 위한 파라미터 고찰)

  • In order to relieve limitation of flight operation under icing condition and verify its operation in adverse weather condition for Surion, military helicopter developed in Korea, airworthiness certification in icing condition is required. The process of Surion icing certification should be considered by implementation of four methods by step such as CFD analysis, simulated flight tests, artificial icing flight tests, and natural icing flight tests. For Surion icing flight tests, these are required 20~30 sorties and 20~23 hours in artificial icing condition; 20~30 sorties and 20~22 hours in natural icing condition. In addition, to proceed with efficient flight tests, it is necessary to implement artificial icing flight tests in LWC $0.5{\sim}1.0g/m^3;$ natural icing flight tests in less than LWC $0.5g/m^3$.

  • The data acquisition unit, signal acquiring and processing equipment, processes and provides major data of an aircraft such as engine system, power train system, hydraulic system, etc. However, it had lots of failure related to the system during production test flight, and it is necessary to fix them perfectly as soon as possible because of the significance of the equipment. In this paper, it contains failure classification and analysis for each defect element to improve whole software as well as electrical circuit. Particularly, utilizing Fault Injection Method based interworking test, more efficient improvement activity was performed for not only equipment level but also aircraft level, and as a result, it is achieved that considerable betterment of Surion quality and flight safety.

Design of a Double-Faced Window Printed Antenna for Aircraft Applications (항공기용 양면 인쇄형 글래스 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose a double-faced window printed antenna for aircraft applications. The proposed antenna structure consists of a feeding line and a multi-loop radiator located on different sides of the window to use the limited given-area effectively. The proposed antenna is optimized by the genetic algorithm in conjunction with the FEKO EM simulator. The optimized antenna is built and installed on a 1/10 sized KUH-Surion mock-up and antenna performances such as the reflection coefficient and the radiation patterns are measured. The optimized antenna shows a half power matching bandwidth of about 33 % at 60 MHz and an average bore-sight gain of about -3.49 dBi. To verify the reception capability of the optimized antenna, we simulated the received power according to a flight scenario. The result confirms that the optimized antenna shows a minimum received power level above -60 dBm at a range of 200 km, which is similar to the pole antenna that is currently used as a FM voice antenna for KUH-Surion.

The Study on Antenna Performancet Test for Surion Radio Installation and Optimal Positioning (수리온 통신 안테나 장착 및 최적위치 선정을 위한 안테나 성능시험에 관한 연구)

  • Surion is required to install radios (U/VHF-AM, VHF-FM) capable of omni-directional communication. Therefore, this paper demonstrates the antenna performance test for the installation of the Surion communication antenna and the selection of optimal location. A simulation pattern analysis was performed employing the antenna, and a coupling test was performed by creating a new evaluation criterion. In addition, the results of the pattern flight test conducted at the previously suggested 1:20 turn and separation distance ratio were observed to be normal. However, the occurrence of voice cutoff was noted in the long-distance flight test. Therefore, in this paper, 1:300 (15 NM) is proposed as a new optimal ratio for predicting the long-distance flight test results in advance. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed evaluation criteria was verified through long-distance flight tests. Consequently, it is expected to reduce the development schedule and cost by reducing the trial and error of the performance test for the Surion model. Also, the results of this study are expected to be used as standards for the installation of communication antenna and quality tests for other helicopters.

  • This paper deals with the economic effects for the Surion(KUH-1) research and development program. The economic effects was measured by Inter-industry analysis method for production-inducing effects, value-added inducement effects, and job-creation effects and by estimating actual domestic input cost. In addition, technical riffle effects was analyzed for aerospace industry, defense industry and commercial industry market through similarity and contribution of technology.

  • The most decisive factor of major sources of a helicopter is the main rotor system and the rotor-induced vibration is one of the technical challenges which should be resolved to ensure comfort for crews and passengers. Passive vibration reduction devices are adopted in conventional helicopters and several types of passive devices are also used in Surion. In recent years, foreign helicopter manufactures have increasingly applied the application of AVCS (active vibration control system) because of their superior performance with lower weight compared to passive device. In addition to weight reduction, AVCS has advantages maintaining its performance over aircraft configuration changes and flight condition changes. The technology demonstration program was performed in order to validate the performance of AVCS when applied to Surion, and optimization process for finding optimal configuration of sensors and actuators. Optimal configuration was produced using ground and flight test data, and its performance was evaluated and compared with flight test result.
