  • A dapo type bracket system which consists of chuganpo(柱間包) and chusangpo(柱上包) with a fake-beam adopted a nemok-dori member to cope with oemok-dori member in order to obtain balance between the outer-side and the inner-side of the bracket system. The middle part of the longest rater in the dapo system is supported by three points made by oemok-dori, jusim-dori and nemok-dori members and the area between the rafer supporting points forms a supporting area. The increase of rafter supporting points and supporting area leads to heightening the structural stability and the efficiency of load delivery. In the eave of dapo system the portion where the three supporting points formed by oemok-dori, jusim-dori and nemok-dori members shows as 33% in the early period, 71% in the middle period and 78% in the later period. On the contrary the portion where more than one of the three dori members were omitted shows as 67% in the early period, 29% in the middle period and 22% in the later period. This is the result of the increase of the number and the distance of steps in the dapo bracket system as time goes on. This is because the structural role of three supporting points becomes important as the increase of distance between the dori members leads to the increase of load which burdens on each dori member.

  • In structural design procedure, The procedure of member selection manages complex data relationship and reflects structural expert's knowledge. It is a difficult problem to construct an effective system with the conventional l programming technique. Knowledge_based s!'stem is a software system capable of supporting the explicit representation of expert's knowledge in member selection process through member data and reasoning mechanisms. This study describes useful methodology for structuring knowledge and representing relation between member data and knowledge. And this study shows the application of this member for member selection in the steel structural design.

  • The structure supporting road sign is a road information facility for ensuring the safe transportation and smooth traffic. But, lots of road information facilities were damaged by the typhoon "Maemi" in 2003. Such damaged facilities should be rehabilitated and could increase economic loss by causing traffic accident. Therefore, in this study, behavior that reduce wind load and improve wind resistance of the structure supporting road sign are studied about wind load beyond design specification by abnormal climate as below. The first is wind load reducing technique such that shear key resist wind load that is not greater than design wind speed but in case that it is over the design wind limit, column member is rotated on the inner steel pipe axis by the brittle failure of shear key. The second is the technique such that fail-safe the overturning of road sign panel by equipment installation in the vertical member. The third is the technique of installing stiffening plate inside the vertical member to relieve stress concentration.

  • A monoleaflet polymer artificial heart valve showed the remarkable improvement in pressure drop compared with other types of artificial valve. So, in this study we designed a monoleaflet polymer artificial valve with two supporting members to minimize the deformation and bending stress of the valve with respect to the variation of the gap between two supporting members using nonlinear contact analysis. The marginal valve thickness was also predicted in accordance with the relationship between the thickness and horizontal displacement in order to prevent the dislocation of the valve tip from the frame wall.

  • Monopiles have been most widely used for supporting offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in shallow water areas. However, multi-member lattice-type structures such as jackets and tripods are also considered good alternatives to monopile foundations for relatively deep water areas with depth ranging from 25-50 m owing to their technical and economic feasibility. Moreover, jacket structures have been popular in the oil and gas industry for a long time. However, several unsolved technical issues still persist in the utilization of multi-member lattice-type supporting structures for OWTs; these problems include pile-soil-interaction (PSI) effects, realization of dynamically stable designs to avoid resonances, and quick and safe installation in remote areas. In this study, the effects of PSI on the dynamic properties of bottom-fixed OWTs, including monopile-, tripod- and jacket-supported OWTs, were investigated intensively. The tower and substructure were modeled using conventional beam elements with added mass, and pile foundations were modeled with beam and nonlinear spring elements. The effects of PSI on the dynamic properties of the structure were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation considering the load amplitude, scouring depth, and the uncertainties in soil properties.

  • A gradient-based evolutionary optimization methodology is presented for finding the optimal design of both the added dampers and their supporting members to minimize an objective function of a linear multi-storey structure subjected to the critical ground acceleration. The objective function is taken as the sum of the stochastic interstorey drifts. A frequency-dependent viscoelastic damper and the supporting member are treated as a vibration control device. Due to the added stiffness by the supplemental viscoelastic damper, the variable critical excitation needs to be updated simultaneously within the evolutionary phase of the optimal damper placement. Two different models of the entire damper unit are investigated. The first model is a detailed model referred to as "the 3N model" where the relative displacement in each component (i.e., the spring and the dashpot) of the damper unit is defined. The second model is a simpler model referred to as "the N model" where the entire damper unit is converted into an equivalent frequency-dependent Kelvin-Voigt model. Numerical analyses for 3 and 10-storey building models are conducted to investigate the characters of the optimal design using these models and to examine the validity of the proposed technique.

  • For 387 married women in their 20s to 50s, we inquired about the differences in whether they intended on moving into a welfare facility, depending on their views on supporting the elderly and the burden of supporting elderly parents, and tried to find out factors that would affect their decision to move into a welfare facility. With those objectives in mind, we conducted a survey targeting married women in their 20s to 50s who live in Seoul, Daejun or a city or county in Choongnam-do, and carried out frequency analysis, intersection analysis, one-way ANOVA and judge analysis. Our findings from those analyses are summarized as follows. First, when considering married women's characteristics and examining their intention of moving into a welfare facility for the elderly, there was a meaningful difference in their intention depending on age, academic background, occupation, and area of residence. Second, our analysis of the differences in their intention of moving in, based on married women's view on supporting the elderly and the burden of supporting elderly parents, indicates that due to these responsibilities, the greatest number of married women expressed their intention of moving in if a convenient facility for the elderly and service were provided. However, the analysis for the intention of moving in depending on savings for old age, did not exhibit any meaningful difference. Third, from the examination of determining factors for married women's intention of moving into a welfare facility for the elderly, based on age, academic background, occupation, residential area, responsibility for supporting an elderly family member and savings for old age, it was found that the burden of support was the only meaningful effective factor.
