  • The hydrodynamic problem is treated here when a pressurized bag is submerged partially into water and the end points of it oscillate. SES(Surface Effect Ship)has a bag filled with pressurized air at the stern in order to prevent the air leakage, and the pitch motion of SES is largely affected by the hydrodynamic force of the bag. The shape of a bag can be determined with the pressure difference between inside and outside. Once the hydrodynamic pressure is given, the shape of a bag can be obtained, however in order to calculate the hydrodynamic pressure we should know the shape change of the bag, and vice versa. Therefore the type of boundary condition on the surface of a bag is a moving boundary like a free surface boundary. In this paper, the formulation of this problem was done and linearized. The calculation scheme for the radiation problem of an oscillating bag is shown in comparison with the case that the bag is treated as rigid body. The hydrodynamic forces are calculated for various values of the pressure inside the bag and the submerged depth.

  • During the disinfection of potable water, humic substances present in the solution react with chlorine to form potential carcinogenic compounds. This study evaluates the feasibility of using a submerged membrane photocatalysis reactor (SMPR) process for treatment of humic substances through the characterization of both organic removal efficiency and membrane hydraulic performance. A simple SMPR was operated and led to the removal of up to 83% of the polluting humic matters. Temporal rates of organic removal and membrane fouling were found to decrease with filtration time. Using tighter membrane in the hybrid process resulted in not only higher organic removal, but also more significant membrane fouling. Under the experimental conditions tested, optimum $TiO_2$ concentration for humic removal was found to be 0.6 g/L, and increasing initial pollutant concentration expectedly resulted in a more substantial membrane fouling. The importance of the influent nature and pollutant characteristics in this type of treatment was also assessed as various water sources were tested (model humic acid solution vs. local water containing natural organic matters). Results from this study revealed the promising nature of the SMPR process as an alternative technique for organic removal in the existing water treatment system.

  • A 3D model was developed to calculate the UV intensity of a submerged-type UV disinfection reactor. Numerical experiments were conducted by inputting the design factors of an open channel-type disinfection reactor and a pipe-type disinfection reactor that were installed in an actual sewage treatment plant. The following data were obtained: The average UV intensity of the installed open channel-type reactor and pipe-type reactor was 7.87 mW/cm2 and 13.09 mW/cm2, respectively; the UV dose reflecting the UV irradiation time and taking into account attenuation effects such as mixing imbalance, lamp aging, temperature, and fouling, was expected to be 21.1 mJ/cm2 and 24.8 mJ/cm2, respectively, and these values are 5 % and 24 % higher than the target UV dose of 20 mJ/cm2, respectively. By using the UV3D model, the optimal lamp position, which maximizes the average UV intensity without changing the size of the disinfection reactor or lamp output power, can be found. In this case, by only adjusting the lamp position, the average UV intensity can be increased by 0.9 % for the open channel-type and 0.5 % for the pipe-type, respectively. A better average UV intensity can be obtained by model simulation. By adjusting the horizontal and vertical ratio of the open channel-type reactor and by moving the lamp position, the average UV intensity can be increased by 7.4 % more than the present case.

  • In this paper, a hybrid type fuzzy controller is proposed to maintain molten steel level stable and reliable manner in high speed continuous casting regardless of various disturbances such as casting speed change, tundish weight variation, 치ogging/undoning of SEN(Submerged Entry Nozzle), periodic bulgings, etc. To accomplish this purpose, hardware filter and software filer are carefully designed to eliminate high frequency noise and to smooth input signals from harsh environments. In order to minimize the molten steel level variations from various disturbances the controller uses hybrid type control term: fuzzy logic term, proportional term, differential term and nonlinear feedback compensation tenn. The proposed controller is applied tn commercial mini-mill plant and shows considerable improvement in minimizing the molten steel variation.

  • This paper presents a new method of segmenting a one-dimensional signal into a set of features of type(line, Vee-groove, Lap-joint and etc.), A set of requirements for the segmentation process result from the application area, which in this case are laser welding, GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding), SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) and high speed tack welding. The algorithm is able to detect an exact welding position in the presence of noise and missing data, yet is reasonably economical to implement

  • As water resources are limited and legal regulations are strengthened, there is a growing need to reuse residuals in WTP(Water Treatment Plant). In this study, membrane filtration system was constructed and its operation method was studied for water quality stabilization and reuse of WTP residuals. The operation parameters were stable for 1 year and 6 months. Membrane fouling was identified as particulate pollution (activated carbon) and inorganic pollution (manganese). The membrane system was operated steadily with raw water of high concentration SS(Suspended solid) containing activated carbon because membrane fouling was reduced by the effect of End-Free type. In the case of inorganic contamination, dissolved manganese eluted by chemicals and acted as a membrane fouling source, and the operating conditions for minimizing membrane fouling. were confirmed by newly developing application methods and types of cleaning chemicals. Based on the results, design parameters for reducing manganese membrane fouling were derived.

  • Floating architecture is a type of building that is geographically located on a sea or a river. It floats under the influence of buoyancy, and does not have an engine for moving it. Korea is a peninsula surrounded by sea except on the north side, so floating architectures have been mainly focused on two points: solving the issue of small territory and providing various leisure & cultural spaces. Floating architectures are expected to save energy effectively, if they use sea water heat, which is known to be clean energy with infinite reserves. To use sea water heat as the heat source and/or heat sink, this study proposes a model in which a sea water heat exchanger is embedded in the concrete structure in the lower part of the floating architecture that is submerged under the sea. Based on the results of performance evaluations of the sea water heat exchanger using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis and mock-up experiments under various conditions, it is found out that the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger is in the range of $3.06{\sim}9.57^{\circ}C$, and that the quantity of heat transfer measured is in the range of 3,812~7,180 W. The CFD evaluation results shows a difference of 5% with respect to the results of mock-up experiment.

  • This paper describes results of an experimental study to examine the effect of a submerged horizontal breakwater to sea water exchange. Flow measurements were taken by using a PIV(Particie Image Velocimetry) system, and mean currents and wave ellipses extracted through the harmonic analysis are presented. As results, the rates of circulating flow were closely connected with the volume flux of incident waves and the counter-rotating vortex pair was observed at the onshore side of a plate. The dye study showed that incoming sea water and polluted water body mixed up significantly due to turbulent motions induced by a jet-like flow.

  • Through the hydraulic model test, a more convenient and accurate method of deter- mining discharge coefficients in the sluice type of tide gates can be derived by the use of aubmergence ratio as a parameter. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Discharge coefficients under submerged flow conditions can be obtained by the application of sutmergerice ratio (S) to the free flow equation of the broad-erested we r. 2. The critical submergence ratios (Scr) for the flat basin and the broad-crested types of sill have the same value of 0.8. 3. Under free flow conditions, the discharge coefficient (m) are 0.37 and 0. 35 for the flat basin and the broad-crested types of sill respectively. However, when submerged flow condition exists, the discharge coefficients for both types of sill is given by a regression equation of discharge coefficients (IL) on submergence ratios (8) expressed as; m 1.3- 1. 17S. 4. The relationships between S and Froude number (Fr), for the flat basin and the broad-crested types of sill are Fr=2. 79-2.495 and Fr2.5=5. 7-6.16S respectively. From the above relationships, it can be concluded that m can also be expressed in terms of the Froude number which is a very relevant hydraulic parameter of the open channel hydraulics.
