  • Soil catena can be characterized by some properties, such as drainage levels and soil textures. Characteristics of soil catena are different drainage levels from a summit to the direction of gravity and similar soil textures. Therefore this study was performed GIS (Geographic information system) and statistical analyses using perimeters from soil series in order to characterize quantitatively and objectively soil distributional properties in Korea. The total of 16 soil series from representative granite and granite gneiss originated soils were selected among inland soils from detailed soil maps (1:25,000 scale) in Rural Development Administration (RDA) and analyzed. After the detailed soil maps were merged by soil series unit, perimeters were measured from one soil series to neighboring soil series using functions of table join, merge, dissolve, buffer, and clip in ArcGIS (10.1). The covering ratio of each soil series unit was calculated from neighboring perimeters by soil series and applied to clustering analysis. Soils that were analyzed were the total of 16 soil series; 7 of sandy loam and 9 of clay loam. As a result, analyzed soil series adjoined complicatedly such as Hyocheon series adjoined 26 series and Jisan did 276 series. The results of the clustering analysis showed that soils were clustered by soil textures except a few soil series. This study applied only one property that was a length of neighboring soil series to GIS and statistical analyses. These results were compared to existing soil groups that were classified by new-soil taxonomy, texture, soil type and drainage level. It showed that these analyses can provide soil characteristics by soil texture. Based on this study, there is a need to investigate further objectively and quantitatively in statistical analyses of soil series.

  • For the purpose of scientific evaluation of oriental medicine, statistical analyses of oriental medicine formularies have been attempted. Four hundred and sixty seven prescriptions in 'Bang-Yak-Hap-Pyon', the most popular formulary of oriental medicine in Korea, were analysed to obtain statistical characteristics on the prescription frequency and origin distribution of two hundred and ninety three herb drugs.

  • Individual effect of genes controlling quantitative traits can not ordinarily be distinguised from one another. Consequently, it is not possible to determine the mode of inheritance for single genes. By studying their combined effectsin segregating generations, however, one can gain some insight into their behavior and can make statistical inferences about their average gene action. The investigation reported herein was to extend genetic variance components and variance and covariance analyses, special attention was given to the genetic statistics from which least square estimators of genetic parameters are obtained.

  • The study of immune cellular composition has been of great scientific interest in immunology because of the generation of multiple large-scale data. From the statistical point of view, such immune cellular data should be treated as compositional. In compositional data, each element is positive, and all the elements sum to a constant, which can be set to one in general. Standard statistical methods are not directly applicable for the analysis of compositional data because they do not appropriately handle correlations between the compositional elements. In this paper, we review statistical methods for compositional data analysis and illustrate them in the context of immunology. Specifically, we focus on regression analyses using log-ratio transformations and the alternative approach using Dirichlet regression analysis, discuss their theoretical foundations, and illustrate their applications with immune cellular fraction data generated from colorectal cancer patients.

  • DNA microarray is currently the most prominent tool for investigating large-scale gene expression data. Different algorithms for measuring gene expression levels from scanned images of microarray experiments may significantly impact the following steps of functional genomic analyses. $Affymetrix^{(R)}$ recently introduced high-density microarrays and new statistical algorithms in Microarray Suit (MAS) version 5.0$^{(R)}$. Very high correlations (0.92 - 0.97) between the new algorithms and the old algorithms (MAS 4.0) across several species and conditions were reported. We found that the column-wise array correlations had a tendency to be much higher than the row-wise gene correlations, which may be much more meaningful in the following higher-order data analyses including clustering and pattern analyses. In this paper, not only the detailed comparison of the two sets of algorithms is illustrated, but the impact of the introducing new algorithms on the further clustering analysis of microarray data and of possible pitfalls in mixing the old and the new algorithms were also described.

  • This paper proposes analyses of characteristics and the technical components of Korean enterprise network. Based on a survey from professionals of Korean companies, we present statistical summaries of building blocks of hardware and software of the networks implemented in Korean companies. We also perform statistical analyses to find the relationships among the technical components and to extract major technical factors that differentiate enterprise networks by the business types and the size of the companies. We conclude that some of the technical factors are closely correlated and some of them are found to differentiate networks by the business types and the size of the companies.

  • Soft shores are particularly vulnerable to human exploitation; however, they exhibit a variety of habitats which provide refuge for a diversity of flora and fauna. This study describes a survey of 13 soft shores in Hong Kong with information on species diversity, sediment characteristics, shore extent, pollution threat, degree of naturalness, linkage with other ecological habitats, and degree of social/economic importance. Data collected were subjected to multivariate statistical analyses, so as to identify shores that have significant ecological status and conservation value for management purposes.
