This research investigates economic characteristics of 2 of 2 runs rules under the Shewhart $\bar{X}$ control chart scheme. A Markov chain approach is employed in order to calculate the in-control average run length (ARL) and the average length of analysis cycle. States of the process are defined according to the process conditions at sampling time and transition probabilities are derived from the state definitions. A steady state cost function is constructed based on the Lorezen and Vance(1986) model. Numerical examples show that 2 of 2 runs rules are economically superior to the Shewhart $\bar{X}$ chart in many cases.

Shewhart control chart is a basic technique to monitor the state of a process. We observe observations of a group of size four or five in a rational way and plot some statistics (e.g., means and ranges) on the chart. When setting up the control chart, the control limits are calculated based on preliminary 20-40 samples, which were supposedly obtained from stable operating conditions. But it may be hard to believe, especially at the beginning of constructing the chart for the first time, whether the process is stable and hence all samples were generated under the homogeneous operating conditions. In this report we suggest a mechanism to obtain robust control limits under self-criticism. When outliers are present in the sample, we obtain tighter control limits and hence increase the sensitivity of the chart. Examples will be given via simulation study.
An adjusted control limit of the $\overline{X}$ chart is proposed for monitoring the continually improving processes. The continual improvement of the process implies the decrease of the process variance, which is represented by a logistic curve. The process standard deviation is estimated by the exponentially weighted moving average of the sample standard deviations from the past to the current times. The control limits are adjusted by the estimated standard deviation at every sampling time. The performance of the adjusted control limit is compared with that of the standard control limits for various cases of the decreasing speed and size of the variance. The results show that the $\overline{X}$ chart with the adjusted control limits provides better performances for monitoring the small and moderate shifts in continually improving processes.

This paper proposes a new algorithmic state machine(ASM) chart and a new hardware description for automatic logic design of VLSI. To describe the behavioral characteristics of the design specification, the conventional ASM chart is modified, and a new hardware description language, SDL, is proposed. The SDL is one-to-one correspondent to the proposed ASM chart symbol, and can be used in a hierachical design of VLSI. As a design example, we obtain a logic circuit diagram of gate lebel utilizing a SDL hardware compiler after drawing an ASM chart and describing in SDL.
Average number of samples to signal (ANSS) and average time to signal (ATS) are the most widely used criterion for comparing the efficiencies of the quality control charts. In this study the method of evaluating ANSS and ATS values of the multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts with Markov chain approach was presented when the production process is in control state or out of control state. Through numerical results, it is found that when the number of transient state r is less than 50, the calculated ANSS and ATS values are unstable; and ATS(r) tends to be stabilized when r is greater than 100; in addition, when the properties of multivariate EWMA control chart is evaluated using Markov chain method, the number of transient state r requires bigger values when the smoothing constatnt ${\lambda}$ becomes smaller.
After a work of Derman and Ross(1997) that considered simple main runs rules and derived ARL (Average Run Length) using Markov chain modeling, $\bar{X}$ control chart based on diverse alternative main and supplementary runs rules that is the most popular control chart for monitoring the mean of a process are proposed. This paper reviews and discusses the-state-of-art researches for these runs rules and classifies according to several properties of runs rules. ARL derivation for a proposed runs rule is also illustrated.
The lifetime is a key characteristic of product quality. It is best to obtain the lifetime data of all samples, but they are often censored due to time or expense limitations. In this paper, we propose a binomial cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart to monitor the mean of type I right-censored Weibull lifetime data, for a xed value of the Weibull shape parameter. We compare the performance of the proposed binomial CUSUM chart with CUSUM charts studied previously using the steady-state average run length (ARL). The results show that the performance of the binomial CUSUM chart is better when the censoring rate is high and/or the sample size is small.

This research investigates economic-statistical characteristics of variable sampling size and interval (VSSI)$\bar{X}$charts under two assignable causes. A Markov chain approach is employed in order to calculate average run length (ARL) and average time to signal (ATS). Six transient states are derived by carefully defining the state. A steady state cost rate function is constructed based on Lorenzen and Vance(1986) model. The cost rate function is optimized with respect to six design parameters for designing the VSSI $\bar{X}$ charts. Computational experiments show that the VSSI $\bar{X}$ chart is superior to the Shewhart $\bar{X}$ chart in the economic-statistical sense, even under two assignable causes. A comparative study shows that the cost rate may increase up to almost 30% by overlooking the second cause. Critical input parameters are also derived from a sensitivity study and a few guideline graphs are provided for determining the design parameters.

Parametric pitch instability of a Deep Draft Semi-submersible platform (DDS) is investigated in irregular waves. Parametric pitch is a form of parametric instability, which occurs when parameters of a system vary with time and the variation satisfies a certain condition. In previous studies, analyzing of parametric instability is mainly limited to regular waves, whereas the realistic sea conditions are irregular waves. Besides, parametric instability also occurs in irregular waves in some experiments. This study predicts parametric pitch of a Deep Draft Semi-submersible platform in irregular waves. Heave motion of DDS is simulated by wave spectrum and response amplitude operator (RAO). Then Hill equation for DDS pitch motion in irregular waves is derived based on linear-wave theory. By using Bubnov-Galerkin approach to solve Hill equation, the corresponding stability chart is obtained. The differences between regular-waves stability chart and irregular-waves stability chart are compared. Then the sensitivity of wave parameters on DDS parametric pitch in irregular waves is discussed. Based on the discussion, some suggestions for the DDS design are proposed to avoid parametric pitch by choosing appropriate parameters. The results indicate that it's important and necessary to predict DDS parametric pitch in irregular waves during design process.

We developed a design chart for very large floating structures through intensive hydroelastic analysis. Using this chart, one can predict the hydroelastic response of very large floating structures preliminarily at design stage without the cost-demanding hydroelastic analysis. This paper presents two new design charts based on the theory of VLFS. The purpose of the first design chart is to determine RAOs of the maximum longitudinal stress of VLFS considering properties of waves and structures. The design chart I can be applied to any sizes of VLFS in same aspect ratios and dimensionless stiffness parameters. The second design chart is developed to take into account the actual wave condition by using the Bretschneider spectrum with Beaufort sea state.
