  • Based on the effective stress principle, a new formula for shear strength of unsaturated soil is derived under the general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion to improve the classical strength criterion of unsaturated soil. Meanwhile, the simple irrigation model under steady seepage is adopted to obtain the distribution of the matrix suction or the degree of saturation (DOS) above the groundwater table in the slope. Then, combined with the improved strength criterion of unsaturated soil and the simple irrigation model under steady seepage, the limit equilibrium (LE) solutions for the unsaturated slope stability are established according to the global LE conditions of the entire sliding body with assumption of the stresses on the slip surface. Compared to the classical strength criterion of unsaturated soil, not only the cohesion soil but also the internal friction angle is affected by the matric suction or the DOS in the improved strength criterion. Moreover, the internal friction angle related to the matric suction has the nonlinear characteristics, particularly for a small of the matric suction. Thereafter, the feasibility of the present method is verified by comparison and analysis on some slope examples. Furthermore, stability charts are also drawn to quickly analyze the unsaturated slope stability.

  • Strain-based criteria are known as a direct method in determining the stability of the geomechanical structures. In spite of the widely use of Sakurai critical strain criterion, it is so conservative to make use of them in rocks with initial plastic deformation on account of the considerable difference between the failure and critical strains. In this study, a new criterion has been developed on the basis of the failure strain to attain more reasonable results in determining the stability status of the tunnels excavated in the rocks mostly characterized by plastic-elastic/plastic behavior. Firstly, the stress-strain curve was obtained having conducted uniaxial compression strength tests on 91 samples of eight rock types. Then, the initial plastic deformation was omitted making use of axis translation technique and the criterion was presented allowing for the modified secant modulus and by use of the failure strain. The results depicted that the use of failure strain criterion in such rocks not only decreases the conservativeness of the critical strain criterion up to 42%, but also it determines the stability status of the tunnel more accurately.

  • Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is a promising cyber-physical technique used in the experimental evaluation of civil infrastructure systems subject to dynamic loading. In RTHS, the response of a structural system is simulated by partitioning it into physical and numerical substructures, and coupling at the interface is achieved by enforcing equilibrium and compatibility in real-time. The choice of partitioning parameters will influence the overall success of the experiment. In addition, due to the dynamics of the transfer system, communication and computation delays, the feedback force signals are dependent on the system state subject to delay. Thus, the transfer system dynamics must be accommodated by appropriate actuator controllers. In light of this, guidelines should be established to facilitate successful RTHS and clearly specify: (i) the minimum requirements of the transfer system control, (ii) the minimum required sampling frequency, and (iii) the most effective ways to stabilize an unstable simulation due to the limitations of the available transfer system. The objective of this paper is to establish a stability switch criterion due to systematic experimental errors. The RTHS stability switch criterion will provide a basis for the partitioning and design of successful RTHS.

  • The method of reinforced earth walls has grown remarkably and the frequency of utilization has been increased on a national scale thereafter introduced in the middle 1980s in Korea. Furthermore the construction case of the extensive Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls had been increased. Currently, the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA mainly used in Korea suggest determining the horizontal distance of the upper/lower retaining wall based on the study results of the internal stability and the external stability of Segmental Retaining Walls but in many cases are not suitable for the actual situation in Korea. Therefore, in this study reviewed the design criterion of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls, performed the internal and external stability in Paju, Gyeonggi-do based on the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA, suggested the modified design criterion of FHWA with analyzing the results, and performed the stability analysis for the internal and external stability and the compound failure. Moreover for the confirmation of the modified FHWA design standard, the suggestion and the analysis of the numerical analysis approaching method using shear strength reduction technique were performed and the design cases utilized the modified FHWA design standard based on the study analysis were introduced.

  • Although most of control methods have been studied in the continuous-time domain, the actual control systems have been implemented using MCU (Micro Control Unit) and/or microprocessors so that the overall systems turn to be sampled-data systems. In this case, the stability criterion of the closed-loop system is not easy to derive. In this paper, a simple stability criterion for the sampled-data system with sliding mode controller is derived.

  • This paper deals with robust stability of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems with unstructured uncertainties. A new relation between uncertainties and system poles perturbed by the uncertainties is derived from a graphical analysis. A stability criterion for LTI systems with uncertainties is proposed based on this result. The migration range of the poles in the proposed criterion is represented as the bound of uncertainties, the condition number of a system matrix, and the disc containing the poles of a given nominal system. Unlike the existing methods depending on the solutions of algebraic matrix equations, the proposed criterion provides a simpler way which does not involves algebraic matrix equations, and a more flexible root clustering approach by means of adjusting the center and the radius of the disc as well as the condition number.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel stability criterion for switched linear systems. The proposed method employs the results on the upper bound of the solution of LME(Lyapunov Matrix Equation) and on the stability of hybrid system. The former guarantees the existence of Lyapunov-like energy functions and the latter shows that the stability of switched linear systems by using these energy functions. The proposed criterion releases the restriction on the stability of switched linear systems comparing with the existing methods and provides us with easy implementation way for pole assignment.

  • Regional evaluations of slope stability by the failure criterion and by environmental geological factors were conducted. The failure criterion is the general conditions for plane failure which consider the geometrical conditions between geological discontinuities and topographical slope planes. The factor focused in this condiction is dip and dip direction. Geostatics, named semivariogram was used for establishing structural domains in slope stability evaluation by the failure criterion. The influential range was calculated to 6 km in the case of dip direction of dominant joint set and 7 km in the case of dip of the same dominant joint set. Then applying this failure criterion to the study area produced a slope stability map using the established domains and slopes generated by TIN module of ARC/INFO GIS. This study considered another regional slope stability analysis. 5 failure-driven factors 9the unstable slope map, geology, engineering soil, groundwater, and lineament density) were selected and used as data coverages for regional slope stability evaluation by geoenvironmental factors. These factors were weighted and overlayed in GIS. From the graph of cumulatave area (%) and instability index, finding critical points classified the instability indices. The most unstable slopes are located in the southern area of Mt. Eorae, Dabul-ri, and the eastern area of Junkok-ri in the first area is plane failure. Also, the expected orientations of failure are 59/338 and 86/090 (dip/dip direction).

  • This paper provides a new approach to analyze the stability of TCP Vegas, which is a kind of feedback-based congestion control algorithm. Whereas the conventional approaches use the approximately linearized model of the TCP Vegas along equilibrium points, this approach uses the exactly characterized dynamic model to get a new stability criterion via a piecewise and delay-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii function. Especially, the resulting stability criterion is formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Using the new criterion, this paper shows that the current TCP Vegas algorithm is stable in the sufficiently wide region of network delay and link capacity.

  • The kinematical approach of limit analysis is used to estimate the three dimensional stability analysis of rock slopes with nonlinear Hoek-Brown criterion under earthquake forces. The generalized tangential technique is introduced, which makes limit analysis apply to rock slope problem possible. This technique formulates the three dimensional stability problem as a classical nonlinear programming problem. A nonlinear programming algorithm is coded to search for the least upper bound solution. To prove the validity of the present approach, static stability factors are compared with the previous solutions, using a linear failure criterion. Three dimensional seismic and static stability factors are calculated for rock slopes. Numerical results of indicate that the factors increase with the ratio of slope width and height, and are presented for practical use in rock engineering.
