The organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been studied as large flexible displays, light source and hard wares of internet of things. However, OLEDs show some drawbacks in terms of external environments due to the low work function of the metals and the reactive organic materials. In particular, the operation functions of the OLEDs tend to deteriorate rapidly by exposing the oxygen and moisture. So as to prevent it, domestic and overseas studies underway in various method such as ALD, PVD, CVD. But it has complex process and high cost. Therefore In order to protect devices from the external environments, it is important to develop the passivation thin films of low-cost and simple process which can prevent the devices from the penetration of the oxygen and moistures. In this study, to improve the reliability, passivation thin films were coated onto the green OLEDs by spin coating method and investigated the changes of the optical properties of the prepared devices at various doping concentrations of sodium alginate (SA). The passivation solutions were synthesized by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) host material with a dopant of SA which were added with the amounts of 10, 20 and 40 wt% into the PVA. As a result, the best barrier properties of the OLEDs were obtained for the samples with 40 wt% SA. Finally, the passivation films can be optimized by using the mixture solution of PVA and SA materials.

Vacuum deposited N,N-di-1-naphthyl-N,N-diphenyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPD) as a hole transporting (HTL) materials in OLEDs was placed on PEDOT-PSS, a hole injection layer (HIL). PEDOT-PSS was spin-coated on to the ITO glass. $C_{60}$-doped NPD-$C_{60}$(10 wt%) film was formed via co-evaporation process and the morphology of NPD-$C_{60}$ films was investigated using XRD and AFM. The J - V, L - V and current efficiency of multi -layered devices were characterized. According to XRD results, the deposited $C_{60}$ thin film was partially crystalline, but NPD-$C_{60}$ film was observed not to be crystalline, which indicates that $C_{60}$ molecules are uniformly dispersed in the NPD film. By using $C_{60}$-doped NPD-$C_{60}$ film as a HTL, the current density and luminance of multi-layered ITO/PEDOT-PSS/NPD-$C_{60}/Alq_3$/LiF/Al device were significantly increased by about 80% and its efficiency was improved by about 25% in this study.
Novel platform technology has been developed to replace the photolithography used currently for manufacturing semiconductors and display devices. As a substrate, plastics, especially polycarbonates, have been considered for future application such as flexible display. Other plastics, i.e. polyimide, polyetheretherketon, and polyethersulfone developed for the substrate at this moment, are available for photolithography due to their high glass transition temperature, instead of high price. After thin polystyrene film was coated on the polycarbonate substrate, microstructure of the film was formed with polydimethylsiloxane template over the glass transition temperature of the polystyrene. The surface of the structure was treated with potassium permanganate and octadecyltrimethoxysilane so that the surface became hydrophobic. After this surface treatment, the nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solution were aligned in the structure followed by evaporation of the DI water. Without the treatment, the nanoparticles were placed on the undesired region of the structure. Therefore, the interfacial interaction was also utilized for the nanoparticle alignment. The surface was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The evaporation of the solvent occurred after several drops of the solution where the hydrophilic nanoparticles were dispersed. During the evaporation, the alignment was precisely guided by the physical structure and the interfacial interaction. The alignment was applied to the electric device.
A polymeric arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) has been proposed and demonstrated by exploiting the nanoimprint method. A PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) stamp with device patterns engraved was developed out of a master mold made of quartz glass. The device was fabricated by transferring the pattern in the PDMS stamp to a spin-coated polymer film without using any etching process. The device had 8 output channels, while the center wavelengths of each output channel were positioned from 1543.7 nm to 1548.3 nm with the spacing of 0.8 nm. The achieved average channel crosstalk and the 3-dB bandwidth were about 10 dB and 0.8 nm respectively.

Striving to replace the well known silicon nanocrystals embedded in oxides with solution-processable charge-trapping materials has been debated because of large scale and cost effective demands. Herein, a silicon quantum dot-polystyrene nanocomposite (SiQD-PS NC) was synthesized by postfunctionalization of hydrogen-terminated silicon quantum dots (H-SiQDs) with styrene using a thermally induced surface-initiated polymerization approach. The NC contains two miscible components: PS and SiQD@PS, which respectively are polystyrene and polystyrene chains-capped SiQDs. Spin-coated films of the nanocomposite on various substrate were thermally annealed at different temperatures and subsequently used to construct metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices and thin film field effect transistors (TFTs) having a structure p-$S^{++}$/$SiO_2$/NC/pentacene/Au source-drain. C-V curves obtained from the MIS devices exhibit a well-defined counterclockwise hysteresis with negative fat band shifts, which was stable over a wide range of curing temperature ($50{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. The positive charge trapping capability of the NC originates from the spherical potential well structure of the SiQD@PS component while the strong chemical bonding between SiQDs and polystyrene chains accounts for the thermal stability of the charge trapping property. The transfer curve of the transistor was controllably shifted to the negative direction by chaining applied gate voltage. Thereby, this newly synthesized and solution processable SiQD-PS nanocomposite is applicable as charge trapping materials for TFT based memory devices.
This paper reports the first results of a series of planarization film study for the stainless steel (SS) substrates for flexible displays. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and octa(dimethylsiloxypropylglycidylether) silsesquioxane (OG) were chosen for the organic and the hybrid epoxies respectively and diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) was used as a curing agent at 1:2 stoichiometric ratio. These materials were spin-coated on SS substrates and thermal-cured. TGA study indicated that both the pristine and the cured OG were more thermally stable than DGEBA. AFM study showed that the smooth surfaces of $1{\sim}2\;nm$ roughness can be prepared for both DGEBA and OG when the films were thick ($>\;1\;{\mu}$). The electrical properties such as dielectric constant, capacitance and the leakage current with respect to the applied voltage were all stable even after the stress of $100\;V/100^{\circ}C$ was applied for $0{\sim}10000$ seconds indicating that the insulating properties of DGEBA and OG films were very reliable.

We present highly transparent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using hybrid films based on carbon nanomaterials, metal grid, and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grid. Carbon based nanomaterials are used as transparent electrodes because of high transmittance. Despite of their high transmittance they have relatively high sheet resistance. To solve this problem, we applied grid and made hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials. Conventional photolithography processes were used to make a grid pattern of metal and ITO. To fabricate transparent conductive films, carbon nanotube (CNT) ink was spin coated on the grid pattern. The transparency of the conductive film was controlled by shape and size of the grid pattern and the thickness of CNT films. The optical transmittance of CNT-based hybrid films is 92.2% and sheet resistance is also reduced to $168{\Omega}/square$. These substrates were used for the fabrication of typical twisted nematic (TN) LCD cells. From the characteristics of LCD devices such as transmittance, operating voltage, voltage holding ratio our devices were comparable to those of pristine ITO substrates. The result shows that the hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials could be alternative of ITO for the highly transparent LCDs.
For the application to optic devices, wafer level package including spacer with particular thickness according to optical design could be required. In these cases, the uniformity of spacer thickness is important for bonding strength and optical performance. Packaging process has to be performed at low temperature in order to prevent damage to devices fabricated before packaging. And if photosensitive material is used as spacer layer, size and shape of pattern and thickness of spacer can be easily controlled. This paper presents polymer bonding using thick, uniform and patterned spacing layer of SU-8 2100 photoresist for wafer level package. SU-8, negative photoresist, can be coated uniformly by spin coater and it is cured at $95^{\circ}C$ and bonded well near the temperature. It can be bonded to silicon well, patterned with high aspect ratio and easy to form thick layer due to its high viscosity. It is also mechanically strong, chemically resistive and thermally stable. But adhesion of SU-8 to glass is poor, and in the case of forming thick layer, SU-8 layer leans from the perpendicular due to imbalance to gravity. To solve leaning problem, the wafer rotating system was introduced. Imbalance to gravity of thick layer was cancelled out through rotating wafer during curing time. And depositing additional layer of gold onto glass could improve adhesion strength of SU-8 to glass. Conclusively, we established the coating condition for forming patterned SU-8 layer with $400{\mu}m$ of thickness and 3.25 % of uniformity through single coating. Also we improved tensile strength from hundreds kPa to maximum 9.43 MPa through depositing gold layer onto glass substrate.

The memories with nano-particles are very attractive because they are promising candidates for low operating voltage, long retention time and fast program/erase speed. In recent, various nano-floating gate memories with metal-oxide nanocrystals embedded in organic and inorganic layers have been reported. Because of the carrier generation in semiconductor, induced photon pulse enhanced the program/erase speed of memory device. We studied photo-induced electrical properties of these metal-oxide nanocrystal memory devices. At first, 2~10-nm-thick Sn and In metals were deposited by using thermal evaporation onto Si wafer including a channel with $n^+$ poly-Si source/drain in which the length and width are 10 ${\mu}m$ each. Then, a poly-amic-acid (PAA) was spin coated on the deposited Sn film. The PAA precursor used in this study was prepared by dissolving biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride-phenylene diamine (BPDA-PDA) commercial polyamic acid in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidon (NMP). Then the samples were cured at 400$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in N atmosphere after drying at 135$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min through rapid thermal annealing. The deposition of aluminum layer with thickness of 200 nm was followed by using a thermal evaporator, and then the gate electrode was defined by photolithography and etching. The electrical properties were measured at room temperature using an HP4156a precision semiconductor parameter analyzer and an Agilent 81101A pulse generator. Also, the optical pulse for the study on photo-induced electrical properties was applied by Xeon lamp light source and a monochromator system.

We fabricated quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) using cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) as sensitizers. A spin coated $TiO_2$ nanoparticle (NP) film on tin-doped indium oxide glass and sputtered Au on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass were used as photo-anode and counter electrode, respectively. CdS QDs were deposited onto the mesoporous $TiO_2$ layer by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Pre-synthesized CdTe QDs were deposited onto a layer of CdS QDs using a direct adsorption technique. CdS/CdTe QDSSCs had high light harvesting ability compared with CdS or CdTe QDSSCs. QDSSCs incorporating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), sprayed onto the substrate before deposition of the next layer or mixed with $TiO_2$ NPs, mostly exhibited enhanced photo cell efficiency compared with the pristine cell. In particular, a maximum rate increase of 24% was obtained with the solar cell containing a $TiO_2$ layer mixed with SWNTs.
