  • PURPOSES: Simulation of aggregate slump test using equivalent sphere particle in DEM and its validity evaluation against lab aggregate slump test METHODS : In this research, aggregate slump tests are performed and compared with DEM simulation. To utilize spheric particles in YADE, equivalent sphere diameter concept is applied. As verification measures, the volume in slump cone filled with aggregate is used and it is compared with volume in slump cone filled with equivalent sphere particle. Slump height and diameter are also used to evaluate the suggested numerical method with equivalent concept RESULTS : Simulation test results show good agrement with lab test results in terms of loose packing volume, height and diameter of slumped particle clump. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that numerical simulation using DEM is applicable to evaluate the effect of aggregate morphological property in loose packing and optimum gradation determination based on the aggregate slump test simulation result.

  • In this paper we study tetrahedron's properties related with center of inscribed sphere using the center of mass. We show that the center of mass of four mass points (A,a), (B,b), (C,c), (D,d) coincide with center of tetrahedron's inscribed sphere, suggest equalities and inequalities related with center of inscribed sphere, and prove theses using the center of mass. Our results can be used in research and education programs, various types of gifted student education.

  • The entropies and chemical potentials of hard-sphere solutes solvated in hard-sphere solids were calculated by Monte Carlo method using the radial free-space distribution function. This method is based on calculating the entropy by comparing the free volume of a molecule with that of an ideal gas, and is applicable even when the size of solute is very large and the solvent is a solid. When the diameter of hard-sphere solute is small the solute molecule behaves as like as a fluid in solid structures, but when the diameter of solute becomes large, a fluid-to-solid phase transition takes place. The fluid-to-solid phase transition occurs at the region of the smaller size of solute with the more increase of solvent density. The least square fit values of analytical form of the radial free-space distribution functions of solute molecules are presented for future uses.

  • It is desirable to have a way to predict the pressure drag due to various appendages attached to stern. As a mathematical model for these, a sphere and a singularity behind it, both in the uniform flow can be considered. We may use the Butler's sphere theorem to find the Stokes' stream function when the resulting flow is axisymmetric, and then the extended Lagally's theorem to get the force upon the sphere due to the singularity. Assuming the separation distance between the sphere and the singularity is small, the leading order approximation for the force is obtained and it is found out that if the separation distance and the square root of the strength of the dipole are of the same order, the effect of the image of the dipole with respect to the sphere is the most important.

  • A "C-sphere" specimen geometry was used to determine the failure strength distributions of a commercially-available bearing-grade silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) with ball diameters of 12.7 and 25.4 mm. Strengths for both diameters were determined using the combination of failure load, C-sphere geometry, and finite element analysis and fitted using two-parameter Weibull distributions. Effective areas of both diameters were estimated as a function of Weibull modulus and used to explore whether the strength distributions predictably scaled between each size. They did not. That statistical observation suggested that the same flaw type did not limit the strength of both ball diameters indicating a lack of material homogeneity between the two sizes. Optical fractography confirmed that. It showed there were two distinct strength-limiting flaw types common to both ball diameters, that one flaw type was always associated with lower strength specimens, and that a significantly higher fraction of the 25.4-mm-diameter C-sphere specimens failed from it. Predictable strength-size-scaling would therefore not result as a consequence of this because these flaw types were not homogenously distributed and sampled in both C-sphere geometries.

  • A sphere-packing problem is to find an arrangement of the spheres to fill as large area of the given space as possible, and covering problems are optimization problems which are dual problems to the packing problems. We generalize the concepts of the weight and the Hamming distance for a binary code to those of Boolean algebra. In this paper, we define a weight and a distance on a Boolean algebra and research some properties of the weight and the distance. Also, we prove the notions of the sphere-packing bound and the Gilbert-Varshamov bound on Boolean algebra.

  • A precision displacement measurement system of 3-DOF micro motions is proposed in this paper. The measurement system is composed of two diode lasers, two quadratic PSDs, two beam splitters and a sphere whose surface is highly reflective. In this measurement system, the sphere reflector is mounted on the platform of positioning devices whose 3-DOF translational motions are to be measured, and the sensitive areas of two PSDs are oriented toward the center point of the sphere reflector. Each laser beam emitted from two diode laser sources is reflected at the surface of sphere and arrives at two PSDs. Each PSD serves as a 2-dimensional sensor, providing the information on the 3-dimensional position of the sphere. In this paper, we model the relationship between the outputs of two PSDs and 3-DOF translational motions of the sphere mounted on the object. Based on a deduced measurement model, we perform measurement simulation and evaluate the performance of the proposed measurement system: linearity, sensitivity, and measurement error. The simulation results show that the proposed measurement system can be valid means of precision displacement measurement of 3-dimensional micro motions.

  • Social Acceptance is important to decide policy of spent nuclear fuel management. The idea of a public sphere as a receptacle of dynamic process is the core in this discussion. The purpose of this study is to examine the concept, participants, the conflict-structure and agreeable conditions of a public sphere. A public sphere means in this paper, mechanism and systems that various stakeholders' and public's participation with spontaneous will can affect decision-making process. For good designing and implementing a public sphere, it is necessary to analysis and cope with political, foreign and security, economic, sociocultural environments, the law and systems around spent nuclear fuel management.

  • The design method of a wave absorber for a perfectly conducting sphere is presented. The backscattered field from a coated sphere can be represented as the sum of the reflected field and the creeping wave. The wave absorber for a curved surface has been designed from that the reflection coefficient of the reflected field is zero. For the design of wave absorber for a small sized conducting sphere, the creeping wave should be considered as well as the reflected field. The perfect absorbing conditions are numerically searched using the Newton-Raphson method from the backscattered field of the eigenfunction series solution from a coated sphere. The wave absorber designed by this method exhibits a superior performance of absorption to that designed from the plate type absorbing condition.

  • This paper is a continuation of the investigations started in the paper by Akbarov, S.D., Guliyev, H.H and Yahnioglu, N. (2016) "Natural vibration of the three-layered solid sphere with middle layer made of FGM: three-dimensional approach", Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 57(2), 239-263, to the case where the three-layered sphere is a hollow one. Three-dimensional exact field equations of elastodynamics are employed for investigation and the discrete-analytical method is employed for solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The FGM is modelled as inhomogeneous for which the modulus of elasticity, Poison's ratio and density vary continuously through the inward radial direction according to power law distribution. Numerical results on the natural frequencies are presented and discussed. These results are also compared with the corresponding ones obtained in the previous paper by the authors. In particular, it is established that for certain harmonics and for roots of certain order, the values of the natural frequency obtained for the hollow sphere can be greater (or less) than those obtained for the solid sphere.
