This study aims to analyze the difference of eating habits in accordance with Sasang Constitution types. For this study, 249 persons were interviewed and surveyed, classified into Taeyang(8.4%), Soyang (19.3%), Taeeum(26.5%), and Soeum(45.8%). As for taste preference, people of the Taeeum and Soyang body constitution types tended to prefer spicy tastes while those of the Taeyang and Soeum body constitution types preferred sweet tastes. For eating habits, people of the Taeeum and Soyang body constitution types stated that they eat food relatively quickly and eat food until they feel full. They also said they normally overeat when they get stressed. The eating habits for the four groups, there was a significant difference(p<0.05) between body constitution types and eating habits. We hope that our research will provide the food service industry with helpful and new information.
Objective: This study reports the effect of Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami as a treatment for Soyang-in patients with chronic diarrhea. Methods: We treated three male patients with chronic diarrhea who did not improve after taking herbal medicine, as determined by zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis. After changing our approach to a Sasang constitution, we prescribed Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami and assessed the effect by the frequency or form of defecation. Results: The patients' complaints worsened when they were administered a herbal medicine unsuited to their Soyang constitutions, which caused an exuberance of Yang. Changing the herbal medicine to Hyungbangjihwang-tang-gami improved their symptoms. Conclusions: This study suggested that Soyang-in patients may have side effects when administered unsuitable herbs, even if they were diagnosed using zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis. When we treat patients, we have to consider their Sasang constitution, as well as the zang-fu (organ) pattern diagnosis.
Objectives The network pharmacological study on herbal remedies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is actively being carried out based on the TCM databases such as TCMID and TCMSP. It is necessary to select Sasang Constitution-specific (SC-s) herbs from these databases in order to study the prescriptions in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Methods SC-s herbs and their processing types listed in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon" were searched from TCMID and TCMSP. Results and Conclusions 1. There were total 144 herbs (Soeum 47, Soyang 37, Taeeum 44, Taeyang 16 specific herbs) listed in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon". 2. There were total 130 herbs (Soeum 43, Soyang 37, Taeeum 42, Taeyang 8 specific herbs) searched from TCMID, and total 92 herbs (Soeum 31, Soyang 30, Taeeum 27, Taeyang 4 specific herbs) from TCMID. 3. In some cases, the name given in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon" was different from that in TCMID and TCMSP. It was needed to be careful during the searching process. 4. Although the processing form of some herbs could be searched, there was a significant reduction in the herbal compound information compared to the raw form. It is necessary to reconsider whether or not to use the processing form. 5. Herbal scientific names given in TCMID and TCMSP or used in China and Korea were different each other in some cases. Additional screening process among such herbs would be required based on the efficacy of herbs used in clinical field.

One of the most important water management issues of Soyang Reservoir, located in North Han River in Korea, is a long term discharge of turbid water to downstream during flood season. Installation of a selective withdrawal structure (SWS) is planned by the reservoir management institute as a control measure of outflow water quality and associated negative impacts on downstream water use and ecosystem. The objective of the study was to explore the effectiveness of the SWS on the control of outflow turbidity under two different hydrological years; one for normal flood year and another for extreme flood year. A two-dimensional (2D), laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was set up and calibrated for the reservoir and used to evaluate the performance of the proposed SWS. The results revealed that the SWS can be an effective method when the ${\Theta}$ value, the ratio between the amount of turbid water that containing suspended sediment (SS) greater than 25 mg/L and the total storage of the reservoir, is 0.59 during the normal flood year. However, the effectiveness of the SWS could be marginal or negative in the extreme flood year when ${\Theta}$ was 0.83. The results imply that the SWS is an effective alternative for the control of turbid water for moderate flood events, but not a sufficient measure for large flood events that are expected to happen more often in the future because of climate change.
Objectives Sasang constitutional medicine is a traditional Korean medicine that classifies humans into four constitutions in consideration of individual differences in physical, psychological, and physiological characteristics. In this paper, we proposed a method to classify Taeeum person (TE) and Non-Taeeum person (NTE), Soeum person (SE) and Non-Soeum person (NSE), and Soyang person (ST) and Non-Soyang person (NSY) using a convolutional neural network with only facial images. Methods Based on the convolutional neural network VGG16 architecture, transfer learning is carried out on the facial images of 3738 subjects to classify TE and NTE, SE and NSE, and SY and NSY. Data augmentation techniques are used to increase classification performance. Results The classification performance of TE and NTE, SE and NSE, and SY and NSY was 77.24%, 85.17%, and 80.18% by F1 score and 80.02%, 85.96%, and 72.76% by Precision-Recall AUC (Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve) respectively. Conclusions It was found that Soeum person had the most heterogeneous facial features as it had the best classification performance compared to the rest of the constitution, followed by Taeeum person and Soyang person. The experimental results showed that there is a possibility to classify constitutions only with facial images. The performance is expected to increase with additional data such as BMI or personality questionnaire.

Background Adherence to healthy diet acts as a key role to modify sedentary lifestyle in real life setting. Constitution type of traditional Korean medicine has been prediagnosed to risk factors of cardiometabolic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the associations between body composition and healthy eating status in Korean adults by their constitution type. Methods Of 4046 participants from Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study, Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort (KDCC) study were included for analysis. Demographic, health-related behaviors and Korean Medicine (KM) type were surveyed based on a general health-related questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and dietary factors by using Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) were assessed only in the half of the original participants. Results 50.8% of Taeeum was observed from eligible 1967 participants (66.7%, women). The highest KHEI score was observed in soyang group (52.0±0.3, p=0.006) compared to other two groups. In taeeum group, lower appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)(%)(Taeeum: 38.7±0.1 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 39.2±0.1, p < 0.05), and higher percent of body fat (PBF)(%) (Taeeum: 32.9±0.2 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 29.0±0.2, p < 0.05) by the lowest tertile (T1) of the KHEI score, respectively. When the KHEI score increased by 1 point in taeeum group, a positive relationship was observed, which increased by 0.015% of ASM, however, a negatively related to in which body fat mass (BFM) decreased by 0.022 kg and PBF decreased by 0.024%. Conclusion Customized nutritional management is required that could help maintaining physical health and diet by their constitution type.

Recently management of vegetation distributed in the watercourse is very important not only for safety but also for river restoration. In general, vegetations in the watercourse increase hydraulic resistance and accordingly decrease conveyance capacity which may yield levee overflow. This paper simulates water level rise using 1D and 2D hydro dynamic model to check the possibility of overflow in downstream of the Soyang Reservoir by assigning different roughness coefficient corresponding to different types of vegetation. In this study, 3 different vegetation types of tree, shrub, and main channel were considered and corresponding Manning's roughness coefficient n was assigned based on the vegetation map generated from the site investigation. As results, the water level raised about 0.1 to 0.7 m comparing with the case without considering vegetation and a proper measurements is necessary where overflow occurs due to low level levee.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the filtering-feeding effect of a freshwater mussel (Corbicula leana) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with different trophic conditions between June and September, 2000. Manipulation experiments were conducted with two treatments (the control and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10 l chambers. Both ambient nutrient (TN, TP) and chlorophyll-a concentrations were significantly (p<0.01) higher in Lake Ilgam than Lake Soyang. Cyanophytes (Microcystis, Oscillatoria, Lyngbya and Dactylococcopis) consistently dominated algal community in Lake llgam, while flagellated algae (Dinobryon divergence, Mallomonas, Rhodomonas) and cyanophytes (Microcystis)dominated in Lake Soyang. The net exponential death rate ($R\;=\;day^{-1}$) of total phytoplankton in the mussel treatment ranged $1.70{\sim}7.39$ and $0.38{\sim}1.64$ in Lakes Soyang and Ilgam, respectively. Mean filtering rate standardized by mussel AFDW ($ml\;mgAFDW^{1}\;h^{-1}$) was much higher in Lake Soyang ($1.70{\sim}3.06$) than in Lake Ilgam($0.24{\sim}0.88$0.24~o.88). Estimating FR per mussel, 1 mussel filtered $1.6{\sim}7.8\;l$ per day and $1.7{\sim}3.0\;l$ per day in Lakes Soyang and Ilgam, respectively. Based on tile C-flux tobiomass ratio, Corbicula leana consumed $0.8{\sim}4.4$ fold of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and $0.4{\sim}1.6$ fold in Lake Ilgam per day. Mussel feeding resulted in increase of SRP concentration by $30{\sim}50%$, compared with the control. The results of this study suggest that filter-feeding activity of Corbicula leana varies depending on the phytoplankton density and community composition. The high seston consumption rate of Corsicuja Jeaua even in a eutrophic lake suggests that biomanipulation approach using filter-feeding mussels can be used far wate rquality management in small eutrophic reservoirs.
Drought is an environmental disaster typically defined as an unusual deficiency of water supply over an extended period. Satellite remote sensing provides an alternative approach to monitoring drought over large areas. In this study, we monitored drought patterns over about 30 years (1985-2015), using satellite imagery of Lake Soyang, Gangwondo, South Korea. Landsat images were classified using ISODATA, maximum likelihood analysis, and an artificial neural network to derive the lake area. In addition, the relationship between areas of Lake Soyang and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was analyzed. The results showed that the artificial neural network was a better method for determining the area of the lake. Based on the relationship between the SPI value and changes in area, the R2 value was 0.52. This means that the area of the lake varied depending on SPI value. This study was able to detect and monitor drought conditions in the Lake Soyang area. The results of this study are used in the development of a regional drought monitoring program.
To define the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in the aqutic ecosystem, Lake Soyang, the largest artificial reservoir in Korea, a new method, fluorescent in situ hybridization was applied. This technique relies on the specific hybridization of the nucleic acid probes to the naturally amplified intracellular rRNA. By this method, the bacterial community composition of Lake Soyang and bacterial numbers belong to eubacteria, proteobacteria and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group were estimated. Total bacterial numbers ranged from $0.3{\times}10^6{\sim}2.0{\times}10^6cells{\cdot}ml^{-1}$, and vertical profile of total bacteria showed the peak at 2 and 5 m depths. The ratio of eubacteria to total bacteria were 22~100% and varied with depth and season. The percentage of Proteobacteria ${\alpha}$-group ranged 2.6~66.7%, ${\beta}$-group 4.5~53.5%, ${\gamma}$-group 4.6~76.7% and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group 2.1~35.9%. Also, bacteria] community had spatial and temporal characteristics. The dominant groups were ${\beta}$-group in winter, ${\gamma}$-group in spring and early summer and ${\alpha}$-group in summer.
