Essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants possess various biological activities and have been considered as natural insecticides due to their potent insecticidal activities. In regard to develop natural insecticides, EOs are formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate and their acute toxicity against to fishes were determined in a static condition using Cyprinus carpio. Coriander EO was used as an active ingredient mixed with ethanol for solvent and various surface active agents. The tested EOs were obtained from a commercial market, and three different extractions were also undertaken to produce EO using steam distillation, solvent extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. Among the emulsifiable concentrate including a commercial coriander EO, surface active agents such as Tween 80, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and mixture of SDBS and Nonidet showed acute toxicity to the fish. With the three different EO extraction, coriander EO obtained from supercritical fluids with Triton X-100 exhibited acute toxicity to C. carpio. Taken together, Tetgitol and Nondet are considered as surface active agents for the emulsifiable formulation of coriander EO.
Multi core-shell composite particles were prepared by the water-born emulsion polymerization of various core monomers such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and shell monomers such as MMA, EMA, 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of different concentrations of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the conversion, particle size and distribution, average molecular weight, molecular structure, glass transition temperature with DSC, contact angle after plasma treatment, tensile strength and isothermal decomposition kinetics. In the case of the concentration of 0.02 wt% SDBS, the conversion of MMA core-(EMA/GMA) shell composite particles was excellent as 98.5%. In the case of the concentration of 0.03 wt% SDBS, the particle size of EMA core-(MMA/GMA) shell composite particles was high as $0.48{\mu}m$. We confirmed that 3 points of glass transition temperatures appear for multi core-shell composite particles compared to 1~2 points of glass transition temperatures appear for general copolymer particles. Overall, the adhesion strength of shell composite particles was in the order of EMA/MAA > EMA/2-HEMA > EMA/GMA.
Multi core-shell composite particles were prepared by the water-born emulsion polymerization of various core monomer such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), and shell monomer such as MMA, BMA, stylene (St), 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of different concentration of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the measured conversion, particle size and distribution, average molecular weight, molecular structure, glass transition temperature with DSC, morphology, tensile strength and elongation. In the case of the concentration of 0.02 wt% SDBS, the conversion of MMA core-(BMA/St/AA) shell composite particle was excellent as 98%. In the case of the concentration of 0.03 wt% SDBS, the particle size of BMA core-(MMA/St/AA) shell composite particle was high as $0.47{\mu}m$. We confirmed that 3 points of glass transition temperatures appear for multi core-shell composite particles compared to 2 points of glass transition temperatures appear for general core-shell composite particles. We showed that it is possible to adjust glass transition temperatures according to the kind and composition of the inner shell monomer that it is can be used as a adhesive binder material with improved adhesive power.
Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate/styrene pair were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator. The characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, where as polymer blonds or copolymers show a combined properties from the physical properties or two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in many industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected phenomina are observed, such as, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve the disadvantages, we studied the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the tore-shell structure or PMMA/PSt and PSt/PMMA. Particle size and particle size distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass transition temperature($T_g$) was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions were measured.

The fluorescence intensity rations (F2.F1) of excimer (F2) to monomer (F1) of pyrene were measured as a function of the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It was found that there were not gross changes in size and shape of sphere-shape micelles in the first micelle concentration, while at concentrations above the second critical micelle concentration (CMC) the micelles grew in size with increasing concentration. Fluorescence intensities of 8-anilinonaphthalene 1-sulfonate (ANS) were also monitored as a micellar probe with varying concentrations of SDS. Results suggested that a phase transition from sphere-shaped micelles to hemicapped rod-like micelles occurred at the second CMC (17). A general formula for the axial ratio of ellip-soil-shaped micelle in the first micelle concentration was suggested. According to this general formula, the axial ratio of SDS, sodium lauryl ether sulfate and sodium laurate were 1:1, 5:2, and 5:3, respectively. The electrolyte-induced phase transition from spherical to hemicapped rod-like micelles occurred and the size of hemicapped rod-like micelles grew with increasing electrolyte concentrations. The maximum concentrations of solubilzed benzene in sphere-shaped micelles and hemicapped rod-like micelles were measured by differential spectrohpotometry. The hemicapped rod-like micelles in the presence of electrolytes grew in size with increasing amount of benzene solubilized.

Surface active properties of these aqueous Gemini surfactant solutions including surface tension, critical micelle concentration(cmc), foaming power, foam stability, emulsifying power and Krafft point were measured at given conditions. They showed excellent properties, being compared with conventional single-chain surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfonate(SDS). Their surface tensions in the aqueous solutions were decreased to $30{\sim}38$ mN/m, which is lower than 39 mN/m of SDS, and their cmc values evaluated by surface tension method were $2.8{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}3.3{\times}10^{-4}$ mol/L. These values were also much lower than that of SDS, $9.8{\times}10^{-3}$ mol/L. The foaming power and foam stability, especially decyl and dodecyl compounds, were good and the emulsifying power in benzene or soybean oil was also excellent. All of the synthesized Gemini surfactants possessed good water solubility and their Krafft points were all below $0^{\circ}C$. As results, DDED and DDOD, Gemini surfactants which were synthesized are expected to be applied as foamers, emulsifiers and so on.
A general study on the upgrading of mica minerals which are mainly found in pegmatite deposits was carried out for the purpose of developing a technique for recovering mica in form of comercial grade products. By the way the grade one of about 5~6% $K_2O$ still is not developed. The target of this research work is to be establish a process for the efficient concentration of muscovite, containing more than 10% $K_2O$. The tests are applied to incraese the recovery and grade of concentrates in term of variations of conditions. The test sample consists of mainly muscovite and gangue mineral such as quartz, pyrite and chlorite. Decantation and shaking table tests were ineffective to up-grade this low grade one, but flotation method gave satisfactory result. By means of grade one, but flotation method gave satisfactory result. By means of grindability tests, an optimum result could be obtained from the sample ground to -48mesh feed size. The flotation result indicates that the dodecyl ammonium chloride used as a cationic collector is effective on the negatively charged surface, while the sodium dodecyl sulfate as an anionic collector is effective on the positively charged surface. Muscovite was floated by petroleum sulfonate as well as amine type collector, it also floated by MIBC as well as pine oil frother under well condition. Fine muscovite concentrates of about 10.68% $K_2O$ was obtained with 22.4% yield, by decantation, the muscovite concentrates of 10.10% $K_2O$ was obtained with 23.54% yield, by table concentration, the muscovite concentrates of 11.51% $K_2O$ was obtained with 23.0% yield by flotation.
Amphipathic compounds (bis-sulfonate Gemini type) with double or triple long chain alkyl groups were prepared by the reaction of N-(long chain acyl)diethanolamine diglycidyl ethers with fatty alcohols, followed by the reaction with propanesultone. All these new Gemini type surfactants were soluble in water and showed much better micelle forming ability and lowering surface tension than sodium dodecyl sulfonate with one sulfonate group. cmc and ${\Upsilon}$ cmc values of the triple-chain compounds were still much smaller than those of the corresponding double-chain compounds with two common alkyl groups. The efficiency of adsorption at the water/air interface ($pC_{20}$) of these surfactants was very high. Their foaming properties, wetting ability toward a felt chip, and lime-soap dispersing requirement (LSDR) were measured. Their initial foaming properties were high but showed good low foam stability, wettability and LSDR.
A sensitive, selective and rapid method for the determination of nickel based on the rapid reaction of nickel(II) with QADMAA and the solid phase extraction of the Ni(II)-QADMAA chelate with $C_{18}$ membrane disks has been developed. In the presence of pH 6.0 buffer solution and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) medium, QADMAA reacts with nickel to form a violet complex of a molar ratio of 1 : 2 (nickel to QADMAA). This chelate was enriched by solid phase extraction with $C_{18}$ membrane disks. An enrichment factor of 50 was obtained by elution of the chelates form the disks with the minimal amount of isopentyl alcohol. The molar absorptivity of the chelate was $1.32{\times}10^5L\;mol^{-1}cm^{- 1}$ at 590 nm in the measured solution. Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 0.01-0.6 ${\mu}$g/mL. This method was applied to the determination of nickel in water and biological samples with good results.

Although a transparent conductive film (TCF) belongs to essential supporting materials for many device applications such as touch screens, flat panel displays, and sensors, a conventional transparent conductive material, indium-tin oxide (ITO), suffers from considerable drawback because the price of indium has soared since 2001. Despite a recent falloff, a demand of ITO is expected to increase sharply in the future due to the trend of flat panel display technologies toward flexible, paper-like features. There have been recently extensive studies to replace ITO with new materials, in particular, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) since CNTs possess excellent properties such as flexibility, electrical conductivity, optical transparency, mechanical strength, etc., which are prerequisite to TCFs. This study fabricated TCFs with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) produced by arc discharge. The SWCNTs were dispersed in water with a surfactant of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (NaDDBS) under sonication. Carbon black and fullerene nanoparticles were added to the SWCNT-dispersed solution to enhance contact resistance between CNTs. TCFs were manufactured by a filtration and transfer method. TCFs added with carbon black and fullerene nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectroscopy (optical transmittance), and four-point probe measurement (sheet resistance).
