SoC Implementation of Deblocking Filter for Block-based Compressed Images and Videos (블록 기반 압축 이미지 및 비디오를 위한 디블로킹 필터의 SoC 구현)

  • In this paper, we implement ZYNQ SoC-based post-processing system that utilizes partial reconfiguration to remove blocking artifacts generated by compression algorithm. Hardware implementation of the deblocking filter in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) provides high computational capability and can be partially reconfigured to process 1080p images in real time. Partially reconfigurable areas in FPGA can be utilized to use hardware more efficiently in highly resource-constrained embedded systems. Experimental results of the proposed system show improvement of visual quality both objectively and subjectively with 0.6dB higher PSNR after deblocking filtering process. The measured power consumption of the deblocking filter during run-time is 68.33mW.

  • This paper introduces a system that enables pupillary tracing and communication with patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who can not move free. Face and pupil are tracked using OpenCV, and eye movements are detected using DE1-SoC board. We use the webcam, track the pupil, identify the pupil's movement according to the pupil coordinate value, and select the character according to the user's intention. We propose a system that can use relatively low development cost and FPGA can be reusable, and can select a text easily to mobile phone by using Bluetooth.

  • In this paper, the FPGA-based SoC board (Xilinx Virtex-4 ML401 EVM) is adopted to control electrical power inverter system. For marine application, its performance is shown on PC-based system for monitoring electrical characteristics of a power inverter using by the NMEA 2000 protocol. This power inverter system is achieved in Real-Time monitoring and control by dual micro-processor operation on embedded FPGA-based SoC board. One micro processor is for control (Control processor) electrical power inverter using by PWM signal. And the other microprocessor (Communication processor) is for communication with PC-based monitoring system. The two-processor is communicating each other using by dual-port ram (DPRAM). PC-based system user can control and monitor information of the electrical power inverter via NMEA 2000 based communication processor. Control and monitoring information includes the inverter status and configuration. SoC board converts this information to Parameter Group Numbers (PGNs) in the NMEA 2000 protocol. This system can be applied to marine power electronics for distributed power generation, transmission or regulation systems on the ship.

  • SoC(System on Chip) technology is widely used in the field of embedded systems by providing high flexibility for a specific application domain. An important aspect of development any new embedded system is verification which usually requires lengthy software and hardware co-design. To reduce development cost of design effort, the instruction set of microprocessor must be suitable for a high level language compiler. And FPGA prototype system could be derived and tested for design verification. In this paper, we propose a 16 bit FPGA microprocessor, which is tentatively-named EISC16, based on an EISC(Extendable Instruction Set Computer) architecture for embedded applications. The proposed EISC16 has a 16 bit fixed length instruction set which has the short length offset and small immediate operand. A 16 bit offset and immediate operand could be extended using by an extension register and an extension flag. We developed a cross C/C++ compiler and development software of the EISC16 by porting GNU on an IBM-PC and SUN workstation and compared the object code size created after compiling a C/C. standard library, concluding that EISC16 exhibits a higher code density than existing 16 microprocessors. The proposed EISC16 requires approximately 6,000 gates when designed and synthesized with RTL level VHDL at Xilinix's Virtex XCV300 FPGA. And we design a test board which consists of EISC16 ROM, RAM, LED/LCD panel, periodic timer, input key pad and RS-232C controller. 11 works normally at 7MHz Clock.

  • In the aerospace industry, we have produced various models according to operational conditions and the environment after development of the base model is completed. Therefore, when design change is necessary, there are modification and updating costs of the circuit whenever environment variables change. For these reasons, recently, in various fields, system designs that can flexibly respond to changing environmental conditions using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are attracting attention, and the rapidly changing aerospace industry also uses FPGAs to organize the system environment. In this paper, we design the controller area network (CAN) intellectual property (IP) protocol used instead of the avionics protocol that includes ARINC-429 and MIL-STD-1553, which are not suitable for small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems at the register transistor logic (RTL) level, which does not depend on the FPGA vender, and we verify the performance. Consequentially, a Spartan 6 FPGA model-based system on chip (SoC) including an embedded system is constructed by using the designed CAN communications IP and Xilinx Microblaze, and the configured SoC only recorded an average 32% logic element usage rate in the Spartan 6 FPGA model.

  • This paper presents a programmable System-On-a-chip for various embedded applications that need Neural Network computations. The system is fully implemented into Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based prototyping platform. The SoC consists of an embedded processor core and a reconfigurable hardware accelerator for neural computations. The performance of the SoC is evaluated using real image processing applications, such as optical character recognition (OCR) system.

  • The NoC (network-on-chip) approach is a promising solution to the increasing complexity of on-chip communication problems because of its high scalability. But, NoC applications generally consume a lot of power, because they require a large design space to accommodate many parallel IPs and network communication channels. It is not easy to analyze the power consumption of NoC applications with conventional simulation methods using simple power models. In addition, there are also many limitations in using sophisticated simulation models because they require long execution time and large efforts. In this paper, we apply a cycle-accurate energy measurement technique and tool to the FPGA prototypes, which are generally used to verify the correctness of SoC designs, as a practical indication of the power consumption of real NoC applications. An NoC-based JPEG encoder implementation is used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

  • In the stripping scan square wave voltammetry (SV+SWV) polarography that is often used to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in water, we must measure the point where the faradic current that flows by the pure oxidation-reduction reaction at the electrode is greater than the capacitive current, the frequency cannot be too high. Therefore we wanted to find the frequency range that can be measured. In order to do this, we came up with a method to analyze the signal using FPGA Soc. With this method, the frequency of the square wave was increased from 10Hz to 400Hz by 10Hz, and the measuring time of the square wave was changed from 96.695% to 96.765% by 0.005% while 1600 experiments were conducted. As a result, the frequency of the square wave maintained a stable area of potential-current within 320Hz and it was possible to measure the potential-current signal when calculating the measuring time within the frequency range of 96.7155%.

Real-time FCWS implementation using CPU-FPGA architecture (CPU-FPGA 구조를 이용한 실시간 FCWS 구현)

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems(ADAS), such as Front Collision Warning System (FCWS) are currently being developed. FCWS require high processing speed because it must operate in real time while driving. In addition, a low-power system is required to operate in an automobile embedded system. In this paper, FCWS is implemented in CPU-FPGA architecture in embedded system to enable real-time processing. The lane detection enabled the use of the Inverse Transform Perspective (IPM) and sliding window methods to operate at fast speed. To detect the vehicle, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with high recognition rate and accelerated by parallel processing in FPGA is used. The proposed architecture was verified using Intel FPGA Cyclone V SoC(System on Chip) with ARM-Core A9 which operates in low power and on-board FPGA. The performance of FCWS in HD resolution is 44FPS, which is real time, and energy efficiency is about 3.33 times higher than that of high performance PC enviroment.

  • In this paper, AXI4 BUS was implemented using Verilator and C/C++ for verification of SoC platform H/W IP which is based on AXI4 BUS. In this paper we proposed a method to verify the AXI4 BUS based SoC platform H / W IP by implemented AXI4 BUS on PC using Verilator and C/C++. The result shows AXI4 BUS based H/W IP that is verified by implemented AXI4 BUS is to perform the same behavior on FPGA environment.
