Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep duration, quality of sleep and depression, and to identify the factors associated with depression in middle school students. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with secondary data, middle school student panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (2018), and data from a total of 2,590 students was used for analysis. For the statistical analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression were performed using SPSS ver. 26. Results: The mean depression score in adolescents was 17.99±6.38. Depression had significant differences according to sleep duration and quality. Adolescents with less than eight hours of sleep showed the highest depression, and poor sleepers showed higher depression scores than good sleepers. Gender, school achievement, school satisfaction, economic status, and exercise time were found to significantly relate to depression. After controlling for general characteristics, depression explained 17.2% of the variance in quality of sleep (β=-.15, p<.001) and sleep duration (β=-.04, p=.022). Conclusion: These findings indicate that it is necessary to develop intervention strategies to enhance the quality of sleep and appropriate sleep duration for preventing depression in adolescents.
Objective: The goals of this research were (1)to examine the relationship among parental conflict, mothers' depression and preschoolers' sleep problems, and (2) to examine the mediating effects of mothers' depression between marital conflict and preschoolers' sleep problems. Methods: The participants were 1,639 mothers with preschoolers taken from the 5th year Korean Children Panel. Date were analyzed using descriptive statistics, partial correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The results were as follows: First, preschoolers' sleep problems were positively related to marital conflicts. Second, preschoolers' sleep problems were positively related to mothers' depression. Third, marital conflict was positively related to mothers' depression. Lastly, mothers' depression fully mediated the relationship between marital conflict and preschoolers' sleep problems. That is, marital conflict had an effect on preschoolers' sleep problem, only through mothers' depression. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results, intervention programs should be developed to prevent preschoolers' sleep problems such as marital relationship improvement programs and mothers' depression improvement programs.
Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the relationships between Korean adult's daily hours of sleep, depression, and suicidal thoughts using data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey. Methods : This study utilized a depression screening tool, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), for the 6,355 participants of the health and mental health survey. T-tests, cross analysis, correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis were used. Results : The results showed that sufficient hours of sleep decreased depression. The depression score for females (3.19) was significantly higher than for males (2.10; p<.001). The participants in the depression group slept less than 7 hours per day (p<.01). Conclusions : The study results showed a significant correlation between sleep duration and depression when health-related factors and social factors influencing sleep were controlled. The results also indicated that this correlation may vary based on gender. This study implies that further studies are necessary to identify the causal relationship between sleep duration and depression.
Purpose: This study was correlation study to identify the factors influencing sleep quality, fatigue, and postnatal depression in mothers who have given birth during the past 6 months. Methods: The study was conducted using a survey with questionnaires to 329 mothers who visited E University Medical Center, or three local clinics located in D city, between August and October 2013. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Out of 329 subjects, 18.2% showed that they had mild postnatal depression whereas 24.3% had severe postnatal depression. Accordingly, 42.5% reported having postnatal depression. Postnatal depression had a significant correlation with sleep hours after childbirth (r=-.16, p=.003), spousal support (r=-.28, p<.001), sleep quality (r=-.35, p<.001), physical fatigue (r=.66, p<.001), psychological fatigue (r=.69, p<.001), and neurosensory fatigue (r=.56, p< .001). Factors influencing postnatal depression include psychological fatigue, sleep quality, number of child births, and neurosensory fatigue, and these accounted for 53% of postnatal depression. Conclusion: Results indicate that factors influencing postnatal depression involve psychological fatigue, sleep quality, number of child births, and neurosensory fatigue. Therefore for nursing intervention for postpartum mothers, it is necessary to assess the level of depression, fatigue, and sleep quality, and to provide interventions to relieve depression.
Purpose: This study was conducted to test whether sleep disturbance mediates the effect of pain on fatigue, whether fatigue mediates the effect of pain on depression, and whether fatigue mediates the effect of sleep disturbance on depression. Methods: This study was conducted from September 12th to December 20th, 2011. One hundred eighty-eight breast cancer patients were recruited from D city and S city in Korea. The instruments used in this study were the pain, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and depression scales. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and mediation pathway with the SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: There was correlation among pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression. Mediation analyses indicated that pain influences fatigue. sleep disturbance, and depression directly as well as indirectly. Sleep disturbance influences fatigue and depression directly, also fatigue influences depression directly. But sleep disturbance had no direct effect on depression. Conclusion: Significant correlations among the four symptoms supported the existence of the symptom cluster. Effects of pain on fatigue was partially mediated by sleep disturbance, also effects of pain on depression was partially mediated by fatigue. However, the effects of sleep disturbance on depression was fully mediated by fatigue.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of physical activity and depression on sleep quality among the young-old and old-old community-dwelling elderly. Methods: Participants were 216 community-dwelling older adults in Korea aged 65 or above. Data were collected using structured questionnaires with face-to-face interviews that included demographic and health-related characteristics, International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ), the Short Form Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to examine whether physical activity and depression would predict sleep quality under other controlled factors. Results: There were differences in demographic and health-related characteristics, physical activity, and depression by age groups, but not in sleep quality. In the young-old elderly, physical activity (${\beta}=-0.22$, p=.043) and depression (${\beta}=0.31$, p=.002) were significantly associated with sleep quality (F=4.46, p=.001, Adjusted $R^2=.16$). In the old-old elderly, physical activity (${\beta}=-0.29$, p=.001) and depression (${\beta}=0.41$, p<.001) were significantly associated with sleep quality (F=10.79, p<.001, Adjusted $R^2=.29$). Conclusion: These finding highlight physical activity and depression as important contributors to sleep quality in both young-old and old-old elderly.
Purpose: This study is to study sleep disorder, sleep pattern, and depression in adult women, and to offer basic data for a program of the improvement of women's health and nursing intervention. Method: A structured questionnaire was carried out from September 1, 2001 to October 30, 2001 on the subject of 441 females, who are above 18 years old and lived in Seoul. This research tool measured insomnia with APA's insomnia scale(1994), sleep pattern and sleep disorder factors scale(Shin et al(1999)'s), and depression with Radloff's CES-D scale (1977). The data were analyzed with a SPSS program for descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$, and t-test. Result: The result were as follows; 1) 35.1% of all participants have insomnia. 2) Sleep disorder group appeared shorter($50.98{\pm}29.41min$.) than normal group($73.03{\pm}38.7min$.) in daytime sleepiness(p=0.001). 3) Factors of sleep disorder were stress(76.6%), worry(55.6%), without reason(39.6%), and noise outside(37.4%). 4) In relation between sleep disorder and depression, group with sleep disorder($20.20{\pm}11.06$) marked higher depression score than normal group($14.25{\pm}8.81$)(p<0.0001). Conclusion: Based upon these finding, sleep disorder in adult women was influenced by psychological factors, group with sleep disorder showed a higher depression score than normal group, and which indicated correlation with sleep disorder and depression. This study shows that nursing intervention on women's sleep disorder and depression is needed and further research be done to verify the results.
Purpose: This study was to examine the cardiopulmonary symptoms, quality of sleep, and depression, and to identify the influencing factors in the hospitalized coal worker's pneumoconiosis patient. Methods: 137 hospitalized patients who received pneumoconiosis treatment were conveniently selected. A descriptive correlational study was conducted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of cardiopulmonary symptoms was relatively high ($3.97{\pm}0.56$, out of 5). The 5 and over score of quality of sleep, sleep disturbance was 94.2%, and the reported depression was 95.6%. The levels of depression depended on the oxygen therapy and family/acquaintance visiting. The depression was significantly correlated with the cardiopulmonary symptoms and quality of sleep. The influential factors affecting depression were cardiopulmonary symptoms and quality of sleep, which explained about 34.1% of the variance. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing interventions are needed to reduce depression, and to improve cardiopulmonary symptoms and quality of sleep in the hospitalized pneumoconiosis patient. These results can provide for nursing intervention to facilitate reduction of depression.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate fatigue, depression and sleep in young adult and middle-aged. Method: The convenient sample consisted of 415 subjects from 20 to 59 years old. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from July to October, 2001. The V AS-F and CES-D were utilized to measure the level of fatigue and depression. Sleep duration and sleep satisfaction were measured based on the subject's self-report. Result: The result of the study revealed that the level of fatigue and depression was higher among young adult than middle-aged. Considering age and gender, the level of fatigue and depression was higher among young adult women and middle-aged men. Depression and sleep satisfaction influenced on the fatigue. Conclusion: Health care providers need to concern about fatigue and depression in young adult women and middle-aged men. Especially, more concern and intervention programs are needed for young adult women and middle-aged men.
Purpose: This study identified the effects of chronic disease number, quality of sleep and, serum serotonin concentration on the elderly's depression in order to provide basic data for the development of intervention program to effectively prevent and manage depression of the elderly living in the community. Methods: The study surveyed 207 people aged 65 or older living in the community. The general characteristics of the subjects, the number of chronic diseases, the quality of sleep (PSQI-K), the hematological test (Serotonin) and the depression (K-GDS) were statistically analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: It was shown that the elderly's depression differed significantly depending on the number of chronic diseases, the quality of sleep, and serum serotonin concentration, and that the variable that most affected depression was the quality of sleep. Next, the number of chronic diseases and serum serotonin levels were the variables affecting the depression of the elderly. Conclusion: In order to prevent and manage the depression of the elderly in the future, treatment and education for diseases and depression should be provided to the subjects. In particular, nursing interventions are needed to improve the quality of sleep for the elderly. Health care programs should also be provided, such as providing nutritional supplements to provide serotonin and increasing daytime activities.
