The physical properties of polymeric foams depend on the density of foams, physical properties of base polymers, the content of open cells, and cell structures including the size and its distribution, the shape of cell, and the thickness of skin layer. The foam density is affected by the chemistry of raw materials, the concentration of crosslinking agent and the blowing agent as well as the operating parameters during production process. In this study, the basic formulations of foams are composed of polyester polyol, MDI, amine catalyst, tin catalyst, silicone surfactant, and water. Cross-linking density of polyurethane was increased by using chain extenders. Also, the mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were improved by using the inorganic fillers (silica 1,2 and talc 1,2) having different $SiO_2$ contents and particle sizes. We investigated the properties of modulus, tensile strength, compressive strength and hardness of foams obtained by changing kind of inorganic filler and chain extender, and observed the distribution of inorganic filler as well as variation of cell size within the foams by electron microscopy.

The weight reduction and improved mechanical property are one of the prime factors to develop new materials for the aerospace industry. Composite materials have thus become the most attractive candidate for aircraft and other means of transportations due to their excellent property and light weight. In particular, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials have been used as an alternative to metals in the aircraft. The composite materials have shown improved properties compared to those of metal and polymeric materials, which made the composites being used as the skin structure of the airplane. This review introduces different types of materials which have been developed from the FRP composite material and also one of the most advantageous ways to employ the composites in aircraft.
In this work, the electro-magnetic interference (EMI) characteristics of PAN-based carbon fibers-reinforced composites are investigated with difference to manufactural parameters, i.e., fiber grade, fiber orientation angle, and laminating method. As a result, EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of the composites greatly depends on a fiber orientation in composite angle. Especially, the fiber grade affects SE of composites in case of orientation angle of 0$^{\circ}$. Then the SE become greater as the change of electric character according to the arrangement directions, i.e., electrical anisotropy in the same constituent materials. This is due to the skin effect which is represented in the surface of electro-magnetic wave in high-frequency range. In all cases according to lamination methods, the composites represents SE of 83~98% over. Whereas, in symmetric and unsymmetric laminate structures, the SE decreases slightly as the laminate angles of composites increases. On the contrary. the repeating laminates structure shows the opposite tendency. Especially, 90$^{\circ}$ repeating laminate structure shows the SE more than 90% over the measuring frequency.
Cellulose triacetate (CTA) polymer among cellulose esters were used for preparing hollow fiber membranes by phase separation method to investigate the gas permeation properties. To endow gas separation properties, 1,4-dioxane and LiCl were used as additives in the polymer dope solution. The spinning conditions including spinning temperature were controlled to form an active skin layer on the hollow fiber surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine morphology of surface and cross section of the prepared CTA hollow fibers. The gas permeation performance of CTA hollow fiber membranes showed $P_{CO2}$ = 17 GPU and ${\alpha}_{CO2/N2}$ = 48.
In this study, we prepared naproxen (NP) imprinted biodegradable polymer based multi-layer biomaterials using allbanggae starch (ABS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and alginic acid (SA), and investigated their physicochemical properties and the controlled drug release effects. In addition, the prepared multi-layer biomaterials were characterized by FE-SEM and FT-IR. In order to confirm the controlled drug release effect for the transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS), the NP release properties of NP imprinted multi-layer biomaterials were investigated using various pH buffer solutions and artificial skin at 36.5 ℃. The results of NP release in various pH buffer solutions indicated that the NP release at high pH was about 1.3 times faster than that at low pH. In addition, NP release in multi-layer biomaterials was about 4.0 times slower than that in single-layer biomaterials. It was confirmed that the NP release rate in triple-layer biomaterials was 4.0 times slower than that in single-layer biomaterials while using artificial skin. Also, it could be found that NP in double-layer biomaterials and triple-layer biomaterials was released sustainably for 12 h. The NP release mechanism in pH buffer solutions followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism, but followed the non-Fickian diffusion mechanism with artificial skin.
The effects of solvents (DMAc, NMP, 1,4-dioxane) and nonsolvents ($H_2O$, Methanol, n-hexane) on the morphology of 6FDA-p-TeMPD polyimide membrane, prepared by the wet phase inversion method, were studied. In the polymer/solvent/nonsolvent ternary system, the binodal curve, the coagulation value and the relative light transmission were measured, and the solubility parameter difference was calculated. The onset state and rate of liquid-liquid alemixing were predicted and the morphology of membrane was analyzed. It is found that the finger-like pores are formed within discontinuous polymer nodules when the binoclal curve is close to the polymer-solvent (P-S) axis, the coagulation value is small, the reduction of light transmission is easy to occur and the order of solubility parameter difference ($\Delta \delta_{i-j}$) is $\Delta \delta_{S-NS} > \Delta \delta_{P-NS} > \Delta \delta_{P-S}$. The dense skin with small nodules and the sponge type sublayer with macrovoid are formed in the case that the binodal curve is distant from the P-S axis, the onset time of liquid-liquid demixing is long and the order of $\Delta \delta_{i-j}$ is $\Delta \delta_{P-NS} >(\Delta \delta_{S-NS} < > \Delta \delta_{P-S})$. The thick layer of fine nodule coagulation and loosely grown sublayer of nodules appear when the binodal curve is distant from the P-S axis, the onset time of liquid-liquid demixing is very long and the order of $\Delta \delta_{i-j}$가 $\Delta \delta_{S-NS} > (\Delta \delta_{P-NS}$\lessgtr$ > (\Delta \delta_{P-NS} < >)\Delta \delta_{P-S}$ ).
Water-soluble sulfobetaine chitosan (SCs) was prepared for a blending film with Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) by reacting chitosan with 1,3-propanesultone. A series of SF/SCs blended films were successfully prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of B. mori SF and SCs. The SF/SCs blended films were examined through spectroscopic and thermal analysis to determine the morphological changes of SF in the SCs. The effects of the SF/SCs blend ratios on physical and mechanical properties were investigated to discover the feasibility of using these films as biomedical materials such as artificial skin and wound dressing. X-ray analysis showed good compatibility between the two biopolymers. The in vitro degradation behavior of the SF/SCs blended films was systematically investigated for up to 8 weeks in phosphate buffered saline solution at $37^{\circ}C$ and showed a mass loss of 46.4% after 8 weeks. All films showed no cytotoxicity by MC3T3-E1 assay. After 3 days of culture, the relative cell number on all the SF/SCs films was slightly lower than that of an optimized tissue culture plastic.

Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

We demonstrate a novel fabrication technology for the microneedle array that can be used in the medical test field, which is transdermal drug delivery and blood analyte sampling. Previous researchers have used silicon-processed micromachining, a reactive ion etching, and molding techniques for the fabrication of microneedle array. However, these fabrication techniques have somewhat limitations apply to the microneedle array fabrication according to its application. Inclined LIGA process is suggested to overcome these problems. This process provides easier, sharper and longer out-of-plane microneedle array structure than conventional silicon-processed fabrication method did. Additionally, because of the advantage of the LIGA process based on mold fabrication for mass production, the polymer, PMMA(PolyMethylMethAcrylate), based microneedle array is useful as the mold base of nickel electroplating process; on the other hand, silicon-processed microneedle array is used in itself. In this research, we fabricate different types of out-of-plane microneedle array, which have different shape of tip, base and hole structure, using the inclined LIGA process. The fabricated microneedles have proper mechanical strength, height and sharpness to puncture human hand epidermis or dermis with less pain and without needle tip break during penetrating the skin.
Solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) system has been attracted increasing attention during last few years as a potential drug delivery carrier However, the SLN have disadvantage of low encapsulation efficiency for hydrophilic drug. In this study, for increase it's encapsulation efficiency, we prepared the $Eudragit^{\circledR}$ L100-55 (eudragit) coated SLN(E-SLN) based on solvent evaporation method and melt dispersion technique, and analyzed their physicochemical properties in terms of particle size, morphology, and encapsulation efficiency. As a result, they have a ${\pm}150$ nm particle size, spherical shape, and $10^{\sim}25$ % loading efficiency. SLN consists of coconut oil as core material, ascorbic acid and okyong-san as hydrophilic drug.
