This study developed education contents of measuring spatial dose with virtual reality simulation and applied to students majoring radiological science. The virtual reality(VR) contents with measuring spatial dose rate in the radiation controlled area was developed based on the simulation from pilot study. In this simulation, the tube voltage and tube current can be set from 60 to 120 kVp in 10 kVp steps and 10 to 40 mAs in 10 mAs increments, and the distance from source can be set from 30 to 400 cm continuously. Iron and lead shields can be placed between the source and the detector, and shielding thickness can be set by 1 mm increments ranging from 1 to 20 mm. We surveyed to students for evaluating improvement of understanding spatial dose rate between before and after education by VR simulation. The survey was conducted with 5 questions(X-ray exposure factors, effects by distance from the source, effects from using shield, depending on material and thickness of shield, concept and measuring of spatial dose rate) and all answers showed significant improvement. Therefore, this VR simulation content will be well used in education for spatial dose rate and radiation safety environments.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the continuous effect of advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) simulation education according to Felder-Silverman learning style. There were 50 female students (53.2%) and 88 students (93.6%) had basic life support certification. The study instruments included knowledge, performance, and confidence. Data were analyzed using SPSS v. 20.0. Results: The learning style consisted of reflective type (51.1%), sensory type (76.6%), visual type (63.8%), and sequential type (64.9%). There was a significant difference in continuous effect on performance by learning type. Conclusion: It is necessary to identify the learning style of students before simulation education in order to maintain continuous effect of ACLS education.
Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the effects of simulation-based training on knowledge, self-efficacy and clinical performance, underwent before or after the clinical practice for the nursing students. Method: A comparison group design was established with pre-clinical practice group (n=34) and post-clinical practice group (n=34). Both groups participated in simulation-based training before or after the clinical practice at the recovery room. Chi-square test, t-test and paired t-test were performed to analyze the data. Results: Both groups showed significantly higher post-test scores in knowledge and self-efficacy than pre-test scores (p<.001). The group with simulation training performed before their clinical practice (pre-clinical practice group) showed significantly higher self-efficacy (p=.044) than the group with simulation training done after their clinical practice (post-clinical practice group). However, there was no significant difference in the knowledge (p=.922) and clinical performance (p=.887). Conclusion: These findings of the study suggest that simulation based training in pre-clinical practice is effective to enhance the self-efficacy and to improve knowledge and clinical performance of the nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of simulation in nursing education based on caring for elderly cognition disorder patients. The education consisted of a caring program for patients that included a process of assessment of a patient's mental status, diagnosis of the patient's health condition, and intervention to address the problems by using therapeutic communication. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. A total of 69 subjects (undergraduate students) participated in the education and they were assigned to two groups: the experimental group (n=32) and the control group (n=37). Data-gathering structured questionnaires that included communication competence, academic self-efficacy, and attitudes about the elderly. The data were collected from October 2013 to December 2013, and statistical analyses were conducted with-test and t-test using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: With respect to education, there was significant improvement in communication competence in the experiment group (t=2.41, p=.022) compared with in the control group (t=.69, p=.494). However, there was no statistically significant difference in academic self-efficacy and attitude about the elderly. Conclusion: Simulation-based education should continue to be developed further for better elderly-patient care. Integrated education in particular using a high-fidelity simulator will contribute to improvements in nursing competence in this area.
This study analyzed the difficulties of middle school students in computer simulation of the law of large numbers through eye movement analysis. Some students did not attend to the simulation results and could not make meaningful inferences. It is observed that students keep the existing concept even though they observe the simulation results which are inconsistent with the misconceptions they have. Since probabilistic intuition influence student's thinking very strongly, it is necessary to design a task that allows students to clearly recognize the difference between their erroneous intuitions and simulation results. In addition, we could confirm through eye movements analysis that students could not make meaningful observations and inferences if too much reasoning was needed even though the simulation included a rich context. It is necessary to use visual representations such as graphs to provide immediate feedback to students, to encourage students to attend to the results in a certain intentional way to discover the underlying mathematical structure rather than simply presenting experimental data. Some students focused their attention on the visually salient feature of the experimental results and have made incorrect conclusion. The simulation should be designed so that the patterns of the experimental results that the student must discover are not visually distorted and allow the students to perform a sufficient number of simulations. Based on the results of this study, we suggested that cumulative relative frequency graph showing multiple results at the same time, and the term 'generally tends to get closer' should be used in learning of the law of large numbers. In addition, it was confirmed that eye-tracking method is a useful tool for analyzing interaction in technology-based probabilistic learning.
