A Neuro-Fuzzy Approach to Integration and Control of Industrial Processes:Part I

  • This paper introduces a novel neuro-fuzzy system based on the polynomial fuzzy neural network(PFNN) architecture. The PFNN consists of a set of if-then rules with appropriate membership functions whose parameters are optimized via a hybrid genetic algorithm. A polynomial neural network is employed in the defuzzification scheme to improve output performance and to select appropriate rules. A performance criterion for model selection, based on the Group Method of DAta Handling is defined to overcome the overfitting problem in the modeling procedure. The hybrid genetic optimization method, which combines a genetic algorithm and the Simplex method, is developed to increase performance even if the length of a chromosome is reduced. A novel coding scheme is presented to describe fuzzy systems for a dynamic search rang in th GA. For a performance assessment of the PFNN inference system, three well-known problems are used for comparison with other methods. The results of these comparisons show that the PFNN inference system outperforms the other methods while it exhibits exceptional robustness characteristics.

A method to extract the aspherical surface equation from the unknown ophthalmic lens (형상 분석에 의한 안경렌즈의 비구면 계수 추출 방법)

  • The ophthalmic lens manufacturing processes need to extract the aspherical surface equation from the unknown surface since its real profile can be adjusted by the process variables to make the ideal curve without the optical aberration. This paper presents a procedure to get the aspherical surface equation of an aspherical ophthalmic lens. Aspherical form generally consists of the Schulz formula to describe its profile. Therefore, the base curvature, conic constant, and high-order polynomial coefficient should be set to the original design equation. To find an estimated aspherical profile, firstly lens profile is measured by a contact profiler, which has a sub-micrometer measurement resolution. A mathematical tool is based on the minimization of the error function to get the estimated aspherical surface equation from the scanned aspherical profile. Error minimization step uses the Nelder-Mead simplex (direct search) method. The result of the refractive power measurement is compared with the curvature distribution on the estimated aspherical surface equation

The Extraction of End-Pixels in Feature Space for Remote Sensing Data and Its Applications

  • The extraction of 'end-pixels' (i.e. end-members) aims to quantify the abundance of different materials in a single pixel, which becomes popular in the subpixel analysis for hyperspectral dataset. In this paper, we present a new concept called 'End-Pixel of Features (EPF)' to extends the concept of end-pixels for multispectral data and even panchromatic data. The algorithm combines the advantages of previous simplex and clustering methods to search the EPFs in the feature space and reduce the effects of noise. Some experimental results show that, the proposed methodology can be successfully used to hyperspectral data and other remote sensing data.

  • In this paper, we deal with the TSP (Traveling Salesperson Problem) which is well-known as NP-complete optimization problem. the TSP is applicable to network routing. task allocation or scheduling. and VLSI wiring. Well known numerical methods such as Newton's Metheod. Gradient Method, Simplex Method can not be applicable to find Global Solution but the just give Local Minimum. Exhaustive search over all cyclic paths requires 1/2 (n-1) ! paths, so there is no computer to solve more than 15-cities. Heuristic algorithm. Simulated Annealing, Artificial Neural Net method can be used to get reasonable near-optimum with polynomial execution time on problem size. Therefore, we are able to select the fittest one according to the environment of problem domain. Three methods are simulated about symmetric TSP with 30 and 50-city samples and are compared by means of the quality of solution and the running time.

Optimal Design of a Squeeze Film Damper Using an Enhanced Genetic Algorithm

  • This paper represents that an enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA) is applied to optimal design of a squeeze film damper (SFD) to minimize the maximum transmitted load between the bearing and foundation in the operational speed range. A general genetic algorithm (GA) is well known as a useful global optimization technique for complex and nonlinear optimization problems. The EGA consists of the GA to optimize multi-modal functions and the simplex method to search intensively the candidate solutions by the GA for optimal solutions. The performance of the EGA with a benchmark function is compared to them by the IGA (Immune-Genetic Algorithm) and SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming). The radius, length and radial clearance of the SFD are defined as the design parameters. The objective function is the minimization of a maximum transmitted load of a flexible rotor system with the nonlinear SFDs in the operating speed range. The effectiveness of the EGA for the optimal design of the SFD is discussed from a numerical example.

  • This paper describes a 3 dimensional position estimation method for a eye-in-hand robot vision system. The camera is mounted on the tip of a robot manipulator, and moves without restriction. Sequences of images are considered simultaneously for nonlinear least-square formation, and the best estimation of the 3 dimensional position is searched by the Simplex search algorithm. The experiments show that the proposed method can provide fairly accurate position information, while the robot is executing a given task.

The optimization tool is based on the minimization of the root mean square of error sum to get the estimated aspherical surface equation from the scanned aspherical profile. Error minimization step uses the Nelder-Mead simplex (direct search) method. The result of the lens refractive power measurement shows the experimental consistency with the curvature distribution of the best-approximated aspherical surface equation

An Optimization Method Based on Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Scramjet Forebody/Inlet Design

  • The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.

FE Model Updating on the Grillage Model for Plate Girder Bridge Using the Hybrid Genetic Algorithm and the Multi-objective Function (하이브리드 유전자 알고리즘과 다중목적함수를 적용한 플레이트 거더교의 격자모델에 대한 유한요소 모델개선)

  • In this study, a finite element (FE) model updating method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) is proposed to improve the grillage FE model for plate girder bridges. HGA consists of a genetic algorithm (GA) and direct search method (DS) based on a modification of Nelder & Mead's simplex optimization method (NMS). Fitness functions based on natural frequencies, mode shapes, and static deflections making use of the measurements and analytical results are also presented to apply in the proposed method. In addition, a multi-objective function has been formulated as a linear combination of fitness functions in order to simultaneously improve both stiffness and mass. The applicability of the proposed method to girder bridge structures has been verified through a numerical example on a two-span continuous grillage FE model, as well as through an experimental test on a simply supported plate girder skew bridge. In addition, the effect of measuring error is considered as random noise, and its effect is investigated by numerical simulation. Through numerical and experimental verification, it has been proven that the proposed method is feasible and effective for FE model updating on plate girder bridges.

Antiherpetic Activities of Natural Hesperetin Alone and in Combinations with Acyclovir and Vidarabine (천연 Hesperetin의 항허피스바이러스작용과 Acyclovir 및 Vidarabine과의 병용효과)

  • To search for less toxic antiherpetic agents, the inhibitory effects of natural hesperetin on the plaque formation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in Vero cells were examined by the plaque reduction assay in vitro. Hesperetin inhibited plaque formations of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in a dose dependent manner. It also exhibited more potent antiherpetic activity on HSV-2 with selectivity index (SI) of 9.8 than on HSV-1 with SI of 8.4. The combined antiherpetic effects of hesperetin with nucleoside antiherpetic agents, acyclovir and vidarabine, were examined on the multiplication of these two strains of herpesviruses in Vero cells by the combination assay. The results of combination assay were evaluated by the combination index (CI) that was calculated by the multiple drug effect analysis. The combinations of hesperetin with acyclovir on HSV-1 and HSV-2 showed synergistic effects with CI values of $0.29{\sim}0.73$ for 50%, 70%, 90% effective levels and those with vidarabine showed partially synergistic or additive effects with CI values of $0.83{\sim}1.33$.
