Analyzing Users' Perception and Attitude Associated with Usage of Signage (사이니지에 대한 이용자 인식 및 태도에 관한 연구)

  • Signage can be defined as the media device that provides specific information to many unspecified users in public places. Recently applied context-aware technology, signage provides personal on-demand information services in a way that can continue to evolve. The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of types which users identify signage on the perceptions and attitudes about consideration of the perspective of the experts in the fields. The research is carried out by applying Q methodology with in-depth interview. First, interviews are conducted to determine the perceptions and attitudes of experts and practitioners on signage. Thereafter users' perceptions and attitudes toward signage are classified by each types using Q methodology. The first type is named as 'signage as smart media', the second type is named as 'signage as passive media', and the third type is named as 'signage as interactive media' is named. The results of this study will be useful guidelines for conducting further academic researches and R&D.

Design and Implementation of a Smart Signage System based on the Internet of Things(IoT) for Elevators

  • The existing digital signage systems inside the elevators are a lack of tailored contents appropriate to the space and environment inside or outside the elevators. Also, they almost impossible to flexibly respond to various contents disclosure according to the demand of the consumers or the elevator markets. Therefore we design and implement an IoT(Internet of Things)-based smart digital signage system for the safety of elevator passengers.. In order to provide IoT-based information to the smart digital signage within the elevator, we propose an IoT system as a set-top box with gyroscope sensor, acceleration sensor, RFID(Radio-Frequency Identification), fine dust sensor, etc., which processes various data collected by the sensors and provides the elevator passengers with various tailored contents such as elevator driving information, environmental information inside and outside the elevator, and disaster information in addition to simple advertisement information. The proposed IoT system is a set-top box that operates the smart digital signage and has an independent information control processor based on the IoT sensors that do not depend on the elevator control system. For the proposed smart digital signage, it supports an operating system that is independent of the elevator driving service as well as the media service. So the smart signage system has a characteristic that it does not depend on the elevator control system since it is a stand-along IoT-based information control system. With the proposed system providing intuitive content for the surge, steep descent, and radical movements of an elevator due to an emergency situation, the elevator passengers should be able to recognize the situation quickly and respond accordingly. In the near future, the proposed system will expand the market of digital signage applied in conjunction with the development of contents in the disaster, safety and environment fields, and expect expected to revitalize related industries associated with signage.

A Study on the Effect of Regulatory Focus and Self-construal on Digital Signage Advertisement (디지털 사이니지 광고유형별 효과에 조절초점과 자아해석이 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the differential effects of exposure-type digital signage advertisement and interactive digital signage advertisement were examined through the moderating variables of regulatory focus and self-construal. As a result of the study, in the case of individuals with promotion focus and independent self-construal, interactive digital signage advertisements had a more positive effect than exposure-type digital signage advertisements. However, in the case of prevention focus and interdependent self-construal, there was no difference in effect between digital signage advertisement types. Therefore, we can help to establish a customized strategy according to individual characteristics using digital signage.

  • Despite the rapid growth of digital signage market with diffusion of digital media, there has been little case study in digital signage research area. More specifically, this case study of Intellian Systems, one of the leading digital signage companies, reveals how it made the successful growth by developing signage technology and its service in such a market. This study also describes how Intellian Systems strengthen and extend their digital signage business. By introducing Intellian Systems and its technology with service, this study provides some practical implications for firms which are relevant to using digital signage in Korea. In particular, we found that IT manpower who has specialized knowledge, excellent components of technologies and IT solutions as well as strategic alliance with a variety of partners as critical success factors in order to gain competitive advantages in digital signage industry.

  • Digital signage takes the role of promotion, providing information, art and game as it is installed in various forms everywhere such as the road, subway and indoor space we pass through. The related researches also focus on the technology of realizing digital signage, current industrial state and prospect in most cases. On the contrary, the researches on the spaciality of digital signage is a kind of insufficient, this study was carried out based on the judgment that there is necessity of researching it in respect that the recognition of space by the people in there is different before and after digital signage is located in such space. First, in order to understand digital signage, its concept, type and kind were investigated, general theories about the spaciality were considered after that, the spaciality of digital signage was grasped by 5 factors such as hybridity, vitality, mobility, flexibility, and contingency and their characteristics were offered in this study. In its conclusion, it was appealed that the change of spatial recognition along media and continuous research are required as digital signage is the transactive space.

  • Digital signage in airport is used to provide the flight and airport information to the airport passenger. However, the current digital signage displays one type of contents to all of the airport customers without considering the type of the customer. Thus, the digital signage suffer from the inefficiency problem resulting in lower customer satisfaction. This problem can be solved if we adopt a smart digital signage which can recognize the type of the customer and provide the tailored contents. In this study, we report a smart digital signage using age recognition. Our smart digital signage can recognize the age of the customer in real-time, and provide the tailored contents to the customer. The smart digital signage can improve the airport customer satisfaction and the airport work efficiency by providing the information that is needed by the airport customers.

  • This study is based on the 'National Pilot Project on Digital Signage in Sejong Special City', one of the pilot projects initiated by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security. This project was an attempt to present the digital signage as a 'public service content platform' integrated with smart technologies. This study suggests that the planning strategy for placing public service contents on digital signage platform should focus on interests of local communities or users rather than high-tech suppliers of digital signage. In consideration of growing needs for smart technology-based public service, this study concentrates on the strategy for developing 'public digital signage services'. In addition, 'digital signage service tools' were designed to easily establish or execute the strategy. The aim of this study is developing the strategy to make digital signage a public cultural service platform as well as a digital advertisement tool. The final goal of this study is to demonstrate public value creation performance of the 'Revitalisation Project of Sejong City's Commercial Districts', which was possible thanks to the proactive involvement of citizens coupled with progressive utilization of interactive media.

  • In this paper we present IoT compliant HD Digital Signage Controller design using Raspberry Pi. Nowadays, the digital signage system have gained increasing popularity and rapidly growing communications medium that offers a wide range of exciting ways with customers, enhance brand awareness, increase sales and margin uplift by replacing the traditional static signage system. This paper presents a cost-effective IoT based HD Digital Signage Controller (DSC) using R-Pi computer that can use various kinds of displays in order to make the system as efficient and affordable as possible to provide advertisement or other relevant information to people in public areas. The system is designed in such way the information about surrounding related place is taken through sensors and directly uploaded to the internet, and thus can be accessed anytime and displayed on screens by using Raspberry Pi that serves as controller in the system. The design and implementation of the system developed by using python programming language and its hardware consists of sensors, Arduino, Raspberry Pi 3 model B board and the displays. The main targets of this study are build a cost effective Digital Signage system as well as broadcasting information at display contents in public areas and control those digital signs.

  • In this paper, context-aware technologies using a Kinect sensor for a digital signage which is increasingly growing as the 4th screen media is presented. Generalized context-aware functions for a digital signage were studied and a context-aware digital signage platform was developed. It can support a natural user interface for controlling a digital signage and actively provide contents adapted to its context. As a basic context, user's gesture and voice, the number of users, sound direction were considered. In the future, the advanced functions such as age, gender will be studied. The implemented platform could be a good reference model when developing a general context-aware digital signage.

  • The development in modern world media made information expansion and conversion much easier. These changes in media environment required a lot of companies to quickly respond to the overall environment and come up with new appropriate marketing strategies. Companies use experiential exhibition halls to enhance their images. The goal of the research is to set the basis for digital signage exhibition production characteristics as a spatial mechanism by presenting the need to use the digital signage as a tool. Digital signage expands senses and connects internal and external space. There are many types of digital signage (display, projection, special media, etc) and they are informative, aesthetic, inductive, and amusing. For research methods, Korean companies' exhibition halls sample analysis and surveys were executed to analyze the awareness, expression characteristics, effects, and usage status of digital signage. In conclusion, corporate exhibition halls should: 1. be an interesting and comfortable space that can be used as a communication tool between the company and consumers 2. increase corporate potentials and faith by expanding human senses and inducing new experiences 3. continue to capture the interest of spectators through diversity.
