  • Direction of arrival (DoA) estimation is a scheme of estimating the directions of targets by analyzing signals generated or reflected from the targets and is used in various fields. Artificial neural networks (ANN) is a field of machine learning that mimics the neural network of living organisms. They show good performance in pattern recognition. Although researches has been using ANNs to estimate the DoAs, there are limitationsin dealing with variations of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the target signals. In this paper, we propose a three-stage ANN algorithm for DoA estimation. The proposed algorithm can minimize the performance reduction by applying the model trained in a single SNR environment to various environments through a 'noise reduction process'. Furthermore, the scheme reduces the difficulty in learning and maintains efficiency in estimation, by employing a process of DoA shift. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) and the performances of existing subspace-based algorithms and show that the proposed scheme exhibits better performance than other schemes in some severe environments such as low SNR environments or situations in which targets are located very close to each other.

  • Rapid shift to western dietary patterns and social drive of thinness would lead to increase the likelihood of developing eating disorders. This study was performed to analyze the associated factors between dietary pattern and self visualization in terms of body shape, which may increase the risk of disturbed eating attitudes among high school students in Korea. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2009 to 2010 for high school students including both male and female students, from 6 schools in Gyunggi Province, Korea. A total of 766 students self-reported a questionnaire, including weight control practice, perceptions of self body image and ideal body image, dietary habit, and EAT-26 (Eating Attitude Test-26). Logistic regression analysis was used to fine the factors potentially associated with disturbed eating attitudes. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS program (version 9.1). Results showed that disturbed eating attitudes were found in 8.7% of male high school students, and in 20.8% of female high school students. Experience of body weight control was reported by 56.2% of male students and by 87.3% of female students. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, obesity was independently associated with high risk of disturbed eating attitudes in male students [Odds Ratios (OR) 2.96, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.90-9.71]. Body image dissatisfaction (OR 2.77, 95%CI 1.37-5.62) and extended family type (OR 2.70, 95%CI 1.05-6.90) were independently associated with high risk of disturbed eating attitudes, especially in female students. In conclusion, proper efforts in education for obesity and developing self-esteem to reduce the risks of disturbed eating attitudes should be implemented in high school nutrition program.

  • As the design of the day focuses more on human-centered design, this shift creates value for society and also fulfills on a sense of social responsibility. In the area of fashion, the design activity is used as a type of fashion design to realize the social value of design in a changed society; this concept was defined as Fashion Design Activism. The objective of this study is to empirically research design activity as a practical value of the day when the social contributions of fashion design are rising in the overall society through the research on the practice of Fashion Design Activity which is adapting to changes in the fashion design paradigm. Regarding the study method, the literature research and case study were combined. We examined the meaning of social design by reviewing the literature related to this social paradigm, and we analyzed cases in which the effects of fashion design on society were realized through practical activities. Also, we defined the role of fashion design based on an analysis of design types based on previous research. This study divided the roles of fashion design in a pattern based on the social roles that design inhabited, in terms of how 'fashion design fulfilled on social responsibility', 'anthropocentric fashion design putting emphasis on users', and 'fashion design aiming for eco-efficient changes'. This study aimed to seek measures to develop fashion design that could promote changes focusing on society, humans, and the environment.

  • Hybrid rocket combustion displays low frequency instability(LFI, 10~30Hz) at a certain condition. Vortex shedding in the post-chamber is suspected to cause the occurrence of LFI. This study focused on the visualization of flow image using light emissions from high temperature combustion gas. Results shows that combustion pressure oscillates at a frequency of about 18 Hz, which is in phase with oscillations of light emission. Since LFI is not a property of thermo-acoustic instability, this result suggested there exists a physical coupling of pressure fluctuations with light emissions proportional to chemical reaction. Also POD analysis shows that dominant symmetric spatial modes in the stable combustion shift suddenly into asymmetric spatial pattern with the appearance of LFI. Especially, the appearance of mode 3 is a typical change of flow dynamics in unstable combustion representing a rotational fluid motions associated with vortex shedding.

  • Various types of multilayer coatings including Al/$Al_2O_3$ structure have been prepared on Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet to modify the morphology of the coating and to enhance the corrosion resistance of the magnet. Magnetron sputtering has been employed to make the multilayer coatings. $Al_2O_3$sputtering conditions were optimized in reactive sputtering by varying the deposition parameters. The formation of $Al_2O_3$ film was confirmed from the binding energy shift measured by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. 3 types of coating structures were designed and prepared by magnetron sputtering. The coating structures consist of (1) single Al coating, (2) modified coatings having oxide or plasma treated layer in the middle of coating structure, and (3) Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer coatings. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies showed that Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer grew as a layered structure, and that very compact Zone 3 like structure were formed. X-ray diffraction peak showed that the crystal orientations of multilayer coatings were similar to that of the bulk powder pattern. Hardness increased drastically when the Al thickness was around 1im in the Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer. From the salt spray test and pressure cooker test, it has been shown that the multilayer coatings showed good corrosion resistance compared to Al single or modified layer coatings.

  • An improvement of vehicle fuel economy is one of the most important topic in automotive engineering. Lots of engineers make efforts to achieve 1% of fuel economy improvement. Engine friction is an important factor influencing vehicle fuel economy. This paper focuses on effect of engine friction on vehicle fuel economy during warm-up. A computer simulation is one of the powerful tools in automotive engineering field. Recently Simulation is attempting to virtual experiment not using expensive instruments. It is possible to presuppose fuel economy by changing the characteristic of accessories using CRUISE(vehicle simulation software). In this paper, fuel consumption at each part of the vehicle is analyzed by both of experiment and simulation. The results of fuel economy analysis on experiment substitute for Cruise to calculate fuel economy. The simulation data such as engine speed, brake torque, shift pattern, vehicle speed, fuel consumption level is well correlated to experiment data. In this paper, the change of warm-up time, faster or slower, through simulation is performed. As a result of the fast warm-up, fuel economy is improved up to 1.7%.

  • In this research, we developed a biosensor to detect lung cancer-specific biomarker using Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) chip based on interference and nano surface plasmon resonance (nanoSPR). The nano-porous AAO chip was fabricated $2{\mu}m$ of pore-depth by two-step anodizing method for surface uniformity. NanoSPR has sensitivity to the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium and also provides simple and label-free detection when specific antibodies are immobilized to the Au-deposited surface of nano-porous AAO chip. To detect the lung cancer-specific biomarker, antibodies were immobilized on the surface of the chip by Self Assembled Monolayer (SAM) method. Since then lung cancer-specific biomarker was applied atop the antibodies immobilized layer. The specific reaction of the antigen-antibody contributed to the change in the refractive index that cause shift of resonance spectrum in the interference pattern. The Limit of Detection (LOD) was 1 fg/ml by using our nano-porous AAO biosensor chip.

  • Spray deposited Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) thin film of thickness nearly 379 nm were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag15+ ion beam at different fluences (Ø) of 5 ×1011, 1 × 1012, 5 × 1012 and 1 × 1013 ions/㎠. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the pristine film confirms orthorhombic structure and the crystallinity decreased after irradiation with the fluence of 5 × 1011 ions/㎠ due to irradiation induced defects and became amorphous at higher fluence. In pristine film, Raman modes at 665, 820, 996 cm-1 belong to Mo-O stretching, 286 cm-1 belong to Mo-O bending mode and those below 200 cm-1 are associated with lattice modes. Raman peak intensities decreased upon irradiation and vanished completely for the ion fluence of 5 ×1012 ions/㎠. The percentage of optical transmittance of pristine film was nearly 40%, while for irradiated films it decreased significantly. Red shift was observed for both the direct and indirect band gaps. The pristine film surface had densely packed rod like structures with relatively less porosity. Surface roughness decreased significantly after irradiation. The electrical transport properties were also studied for both the pristine and irradiated films by Hall effect. The results are discussed.

  • Graphene, two dimensional sheet of sp2-hybridized carbon, has attracted an enormous amount of interest due to excellent electrical, chemical and mechanical properties for the application of transparent conducting films, clean energy devices, field-effect transistors, optoelectronic devices and chemical sensors. Especially, graphene is promising candidate to detect the gas molecules and biomolecules due to the large specific surface area and signal-to-noise ratios. Despite of importance to the disease diagnosis, there are a few reports to demonstrate the graphene- and rGO-FET for biological sensors and the sensing mechanism are not fully understood. Here we describe scalable and facile fabrication of rGO-FET with the capability of label-free, ultrasensitive electrical detection of a cancer biomarker, prostate specific antigen/${\alpha}1$-antichymotrypsin (PSA-ACT) complex, in which the ultrathin rGO sensing channel was simply formed by a uniform self-assembly of two-dimensional rGO nanosheets on aminated pattern generated by inkjet printing. Sensing characteristics of rGO-FET immunosensor showed the highly precise, reliable, and linear shift in the Dirac point with the analyte concentration of PSA-ACT complex and extremely low detection limit as low as 1 fg/ml. We further analyzed the charge doping mechanism, which is the change in the charge carrier in the rGO channel varying by the concentration of biomolecules. Amenability of solution-based scalable fabrication and extremely high performance may enable rGO-FET device as a versatile multiplexed diagnostic biosensor for disease biomarkers.

  • To observe the formation of defects at the interface between an oxide semiconductor and $SiO_2$, ZnO was prepared on $SiO_2$ with various oxygen gas flow rates by RF magnetron sputtering deposition. The crystallinity of ZnO depends on the characteristic of the surface of the substrate. The crystallinity of ZnO on a Si wafer increased due to the activation of ionic interactions after an annealing process, whereas that of ZnO on $SiO_2$ changed due to the various types of defects which had formed as a result of the deposition conditions and the annealing process. To observe the chemical shift to understand of defect deformations at the interface between the ZnO and $SiO_2$, the O 1s electron spectra were convoluted into three sub-peaks by a Gaussian fitting. The O 1s electron spectra consisted of three peaks as metal oxygen (at 530.5 eV), $O^{2-}$ ions in an oxygen-deficient region (at 531.66 eV) and OH bonding (at 532.5 eV). In view of the crystallinity from the peak (103) in the XRD pattern, the metal oxygen increased with a decrease in the crystallinity. However, the low FWHM (full width at half maximum) at the (103) plane caused by the high crystallinity depended on the increment of the oxygen vacancies at 531.66 eV due to the generation of $O^{2-}$ ions in the oxygen-deficient region formed by thermal activation energy.
