The subjects of this were 200 persons with cancer (100- in patients and 100- out patients), both male and female, between 30 and 59 years of age. Data were obtained using a convenience sample technique from two university hospitals in seoul from August, 1989, to June, 1990. The instruments used for this study were the Quality of life scale developed by Ro, You - Ja and the Health Locus of Control scale developed by Wallston & Wallston. Data were analyzed using a SAS program for ANOVA, t-test, Schefffe test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows : 1. The scores on the quality of life scale ranged from 95 to 191 with as mean of 147.85(range 47 to 235). The Mean scores(range 1-5) on the different dimensions were family relationships 3.50, relationships with neighbours 3.48, self - esteem 3.17, physical state and function 2.99, economic life 2.93 and emotional life 2.91. 2. Significantly higher scores on the quality of life and demographic characteristics were as follows : the quality of life for women(t=2.80, p= .006), for those without complications(t=2.54, p= .013), and for those who perceived their illness as mild(F=4.85, p= .009). Higher scores on quality of life were correlated with the following : 1) emotional state and the age group 50-59(F=3.43, p= .34). 2) economic life and higher income(F=6.72, p= .002), those without complications(t=2.68, p= .00), and those who perceived their illness as mild(F=3.11, p= .05). 3) self-esteem and marriage(F=3.64, p=.028), those without complications(t=2.18, p=.03), and those who perceived their illness as mild(F=7.72, p=.000). 4) physical state and funciton and the age group 30-39(F=4.65, p=.010), those without complications (t=2.00, p=.05), and those who perceived their illness as mild(F=3.38, p=.04). 5) family relationship and those who live with their spouse(t=2.82, p=.005). 3. There was a significant positive correlation between the subjects perceptions of their current state of health and the quality of life score(r=.4364, p=.0001). 4. There was no relationship between Locus of control and quality of life in this sample. 5. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that: 1) the perception of current health status was the main predictor and accounted for 20.11% of the total variance. 2) sex and educational level accounted for an additional 21.71% of the total variance. 6. The quality of life and the perception of their current health status of these patients with cancer were generally lower than those of healthy adults as noted in previous studies. In conclusion, the quality of life for these cancer patients was generally low especially in regard to their emotional state. • This study was designed to identify the relation between health beliefs and compliance with weight control behavior in obese high school students living in Chonnam province. The data were collected from May 24 to 29, 1999. The instruments used in this study were modified by the authors on the basis of the results of the study's related references. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation using the SAS PC+ program. The results were as follows : 1. The correlation between health concern and compliance with weight control behavior was revealed as statistically significant (r= .34, p= .005). From the correlation of variables, it is concluded that there were statistically significant relations between health concern and benefit (r= .25, p= .043), between health concern and barrier (r= .33, p= .008), between susceptibility and severity (r= .64, p= .000), between susceptibility and benefit (r= .42, p= .000), between susceptibility and barrier (r= .44, p= .003), between severity and benefit (r= .37, p= .002), between severity and barrier (r= .56, p= .000), and between benefit and barrier (r= .38, p= .002). Thus, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, and perceived barrier had an indirect influence on compliance with weight control behavior. 2. In the analysis of the relationship between general characteristics and compliance with weight control behavior and health belief variables: Sex (t=2.56, p= .010) was revealed as the influencing variable of health concern. The number of those subjects living together (F=2.88, p= .044) was revealed as the influencing variable of susceptibility. Sex (t=3.47, p= .047), income (F=1.67, p= .051) was revealed as the influencing variable of barrier. 3. In the analysis of the relationship between obese characteristics and compliance with weight control behavior and health belief variables: Perception of weight (F=9.21, p= .000), family history of obesity (t=4.89, p= 030), environment of obesity (t=14.30, p= .000) were revealed as the influencing variables of susceptibility. Perception of weight (F=4.86, p= .001), symptoms of obesity (t=4.46, p= .006), family history of obesity (t=6.59, p= .012), environment of obesity (11.30, p= .001), and reasons of weight control (F=3.07, p= .010) were revealed as the influencing variables of severity. Symptoms of obesity (F=4.15, p= .009), reasons of weight control (F=2.41, p= .046) were revealed as the influencing variables of benefit. Environments of obesity (t=4.23, p= .044) were revealed as influencing variables of barrier. These results suggest that for improvement in compliance with weight control behavior, school nurses should stimulate the students' concerns about health.

  • This study is an exploratory study on stock investment behaviors of individual investors in psychological perspective. The study is based on many behavioral finance studies which overconfidence of individual investors has an effect on irrational investment decision making and investment behaviors such as excessive trading. Accordingly, this study was to investigate the factors of self-enhancement perception on confidence of investment of individual investors and to find whether these psychological biases lead to irrational investment behaviors. The results indicated that there were sex differences in the factors of self-enhancement perception on individual investors' confidence of investment. In case of male investors, they were confident of their ability of investment but in case of female investors, they were confident of optimistic expectation of return. Also, male investors were more confident of investment than female investors. In addition, the result showed that risky investment behaviors of individual investors were influenced by psychological factors such as favorable self-evaluation, confidence of self-controllability, optimistic expectation of return and confidence of investment in part. This study suggests that further researches need to search after other variables which can mediate between psychological factors and investment behaviors of individual investors.

  • Those composing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complex such as the temporal bone, the disc and the mandibular condyle perform their own functions with organic relation. The retrodiscal tissue is the main area of pain induction and contributes to compositional change of synovial fluid. If displacement of the disc lasts long time, not only adaptive changes, but also destructive or degenerative changes may happen. It was reported that these changes and symptoms appear mostly to female rather than male and especially, in the case of patients suffering from TMJ disorder, a large quantity of female sex hormone is found in the joint synovium. And that may play a role in bone resorption and inflammation. Also, the frequency and the intensity of pain perception for female is reported to be much more than for male. In this study, we investigated the expression extents of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesteron receptors (PR) in retrodiscal tissue with immunohistochemistry among the patients received TMJ surgery and compared with MRI findings and surgical findings. We report the relations between the expression of ER in retrodiscal tissue and the pathological change in TMJ, such as inflammation, internal derangement and osteoarthritis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how parental childrearing behavior and children's sibling relationships are related to children's self-esteem. 440 middle class families consisting of two children and their parents were the subjects of this study. The research instruments included a childrearing behavior questionnaire, the Sibling Relationships Questionnaire (Furman & Buhrmester, 1985), and the Self-Perception Profile for Children (Harter, 1985). Analyses of the data included correlation analysis, canonical correlation, regression, stepwise multiple regression, and MANOVA with stepwise discriminant analysis as the follow-up test. The most powerful predictors of children's self-esteem were the Warmth-Acceptance of childrearing behavior and the Warmth-Closeness of sibling relationships. The self-esteem dimension was best predicted by parental childrearing behavior and by children's sibling relationships was Global Self-Worth. Behavioral Conduct was best predicted by the Rejection-Restriction factor of childrearing, and by Conflict (for boys) and Rivalry (for girls) factors of sibling relationships. Children's self-esteem was related more strongly to the Warmth-Acceptance and the Rejection-Restriction of opposite-sex parents. The effects of Permissiveness-Nonintervention were stronger in same-sex parent-child dyads. Parental childrearing behaviors accounted for boy's self-esteem better than girl's with the exception of Behavioral Conduct. Sibling relationships accounted for girl's self-esteem better than boy's. The $2{\times}2$ MANOVA revealed interaction effects of parental childrearing behaviors and sibling relationships on children's self-esteem. Two factors of Rivalry and Conflict in sibling relationships and all three factors of childrearing behaviors showed significant interaction effects, The childrearing factor of Permissiveness-Nonintervention and the sibling factor of Rivalry, which were relatively weak predictors of self-esteem when acting alone, gained power in explaining children's self-esteem within the interactional context.
