  • It is needed to make more efforts to activate the gifted child education in elementary information science regarding selection of the gifted, development of appropriate curriculum, however, as a saying goes that a quality of education is depended on teacher's quality, and outstanding performance of teachers in charge of teaching the gifted is critical to make education for the gifted in elementary information science successful. Considering the significances of teacher variances, the research on the professionality of teacher who is responsible for the elite education in elementary information science should be made, along with a plan to cultivate their competence.

  • This research was planned to analyze the students' science writing tendencies according to the level of meta-cognition for using as materials of selection of gifted students. To get results, meta-cognition writing tests which measured critical thinking ability and problem solving ability were developed, and the students' the level of meta-cognition was measured. Thereafter We analyzed the students' science writing tendencies in accordance with the level of meta-cognition through the science writing with meta-cognition task(the main theme are expectation; explanation; claim; criticism; imagination), and found out the students' ability of science writing was different with the level of meta-cognition. Students with the low level meta-cognition did not represent their thinking well, but students with the high level meta-cognition were try to upgrade their writing through highly concentration and perceiving theirs writing mistakes. As this results, science writing is useful as materials of selection of gifted students.

  • Problem posing is used to develop the creativity program and adaption for the gifted, and to screen the gifted students in the selection process. However existing creativity assessment factors(fluence, flexibility, originality) has been recognized to have it's limitation to assess the mathematical creativity. To improve the creativity assessment, we propose new set of assessment factors for mathematical creativity test through problem posing. For this study, we let 19 mathematically gifted students to pose two good mathematical problems for a limited time after solving a certain problem so called a reference problem. A week late, we let the subjects, pre-service teachers, and experts to evaluate the problems posed by the subjects, and leave the reasons for evaluating highest mark and lowest mark. With this date, we propose fluence, flexibility, originality, anti-similarity, complexity, elaboration as the set of mathematics creativity assessment factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of paper-pencil tests for exploring its appropriateness as a selection tool of the gifted in science. For this purpose, we developed two (internal and external) item analysis frameworks, and applied these frameworks to analyse qualitative characteristics. Also, we analysed the relationship between two characteristics. The results of analysing qualitative characteristics revealed that the portion of items with acceleration context exceeding middle school curriculum level was relatively large, which caused low content validity. Furthermore, there was considerable deviation in content and context by subject matter and year, which caused test unstability. Items measuring knowledge domain was the most prevalent, and too much weight on data interpretation & analysis domain in inquiry process skills. In case of creativity test, the portion of items measuring convergent thinking was much larger than that of divergent or associative thinking. Most of these items were represented by using pictures and tables rather than using graphs. Item types of multiple-choice and short answers were superior to essay types. Discrimination index, on the whole, was appropriate (above 0.3), but item difficulty showed a vast deviation ($0.01{\sim}0.90$). Correlation coefficients among subject matters and test tools were very low, and test reliabilities were also low. Low item difficulty & high discrimination index item types were distinguishable. Items with acceleration context were more discriminating than enrichment context. Implications of developing quality paper-pencil test items in the selection of gifted students are discussed.

  • In current knowledge-based society, development and growth of IT-related industry is essential for a nation's competitiveness since it's economic power depends on IT industry in many countries. A success of IT industry depends on a few IT geniuses like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Thus, it is necessary to identify and foster gifted children in IT as early as possible. The purpose of this paper is to identify the correlation of academic performance per subject for the gifted children in IT. The analysis is focused on three subjects, that is, Information, Science, and Mathematics, respectively. For this purpose, the gifted children are selected and analyzed in a gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area. The analysis results show that there is meaningful correlation among three subjects. That is, if high scores in a subject means high scores in other subjects. For instance, a gifted child with high scores in Information got high scores in Science and Mathematics. The result will be useful to improve selection examinations and curriculum for gifted education in IT, for inclusive education and convergent education.

  • Today, as a daily routine such as administration/finance is operated under information system and various cyber crime against national, public, and private institutions happen, demand for information security manpower is increasing. Hence, Ministry of Education has formed an Institute of Information Security Education for the Gifted to early discover talent in the field of information security and train professional personnel with specialty and ethics in 4 universities of country in 2014. But the nascent Institute of Information Security Education for the Gifted lack systematic analyses compared to Institute of Mathematics and Science Education for the Gifted that has existed from a long time ago. In this paper, we analyze the state of the Institute of Information Security Education for the Gifted in three parts: operation, selection, education and suggest an improvement to build a practical program for effective operations and education.

  • Offered in this paper are standards for evaluation of a center for scientifically gifted education attached to a university. Various methods of study are used, such as review of literature, professional meetings, seminars, and discussion groups. To implement this study we first analyzed the current status and problem of the center through examination of already published research in regard to scientifically gifted education. Based on this analysis, we then identified the direction and framework of evaluation of a center for scientifically gifted education attached to a university that could function as a local education center for the gifted. After this, we designed detailed standards for evaluation for such a center in regard to direction, organization, procedures and methods for selection of a center, curriculum development, and strategies of instruction and evaluation according to the characteristics, phase, and function of the center as identified. Lastly, we presented a framework for evaluation concluding standards and methods for evaluation classified by the domains and times of evaluation we had explored. Plans for evaluation of the center as described here, will provide meaningful suggestions enabling centers for scientifically gifted education to improve the quality of their institutions'educational environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the middle school science gifted students' perception of the open-inquiry activity. To conduct the research we worked with 80 science gifted students, and the questionnaire was about the experience of the open-inquiry activity and the preference of the research methods. And also, we observed 19 gifted students of their open-inquiry activity and interviewed in each step. The answers were compared with the questionnaire survey. As a result, gifted students in this study have average of 3.25 times of open-inquiry experiences, and they prefer the group investigation comparing with the individual project. In the method of selecting the subject, they prefer an autonomous selection rather than passive influence of the instructor. And they seem to give large meaning on the fact that they are operating the open-Inquiry by themselves.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an identification model for gifted students, based on class observations and nominations. The definition, issues and methods of identification were examined to achieve the research goal. Gifted identification model based on class observations and nominations consists of 4 steps: The first is the collection of multidimensional information on students, and the second is the evaluation of the students' portfolios with the rubric that has the criteria of rating scales on each information. At the third, students are observed in the class. Then the students are interviewed for the evaluation of their cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics. At the fourth, the identification committee makes a final decision for the selection of gifted students, after considering all the results from the steps. This model will be helpful to identify gifted students who are regarded to have potential abilities, especially economically disadvantaged students.

Thus, it is necessary to identify and foster gifted children in IT as early as possible. The purpose of this paper is to identify if EPL is proper language for testing programming ability of the gifted children in IT. Scratch language is selected as an EPL. For the experiment, gifted children from a gifted institution at some university are selected and their programming test scores are gathered and analyzed. Based on statistical analysis, the conclusion is that Scratch language is not proper for testing programming ability for the gifted children in IT. This result will be helpful for selection examinations, curriculum for gifted education in IT.
