The study was conducted in a glasshouse to examine the possibility of producing paprika plug seedlings in a newly developed inert phenolic foam growing medium. Plug seedlings of 'Fascinato' paprika were grown in five media, Grodan rockwool (Grodan Co. Ltd., Denmark), UR rockwool (UR Co. Ltd., Korea), phenolic foam LC (Smithers Oasis Korea Co. Ltd., Korea), phenolic foam RC, and phenolic foam 3813-4 all in a pellet type. Seeds were germinated in a growth chamber ($25^{\circ}C$, 90% RH, dark) for 4-5 days and then seedlings were grown in a glasshouse with nutrient solution supplied by an overhead irrigation system. Seedling growths were measured 20 days after sowing. The medium pH was the highest in the Grodan rockwool, and medium EC was the highest in phenolic foam 3813-4, although no nutritional excess disorders were observed. Germination rates of paprika were higher than 90% in all the media. Plant height, stem diameter, T/R ratio, leaf area, and chlorophyll showed a similar to those in the rockwool medium. Number of leaves, length of the longest root and dry weights of shoot were not significantly different among treatments. Overall, phenolic foam LC and RC produced seedlings with a similar growth as the rockwool medium. The results obtained suggest that rockwool can be replaced with a new material such as phenolic foam in the commercial scale production of plug seedlings of 'Fascinato' paprika.
This study was conducted to develop the testing method for excessive water tolerance at germinating stage and to screen 31 domestic peanut cultivars. Regardless of peanut grain scales, the amount of seed absorption nearly reached the peak in 10 hours after imbibition. When peanut seed in vermiculate soil was directly soaked in water, ability of emergence did not reduced until 16 days and then sharply reduce to 25 days with non-emergence. When seeds germinated for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after seeding (DAS) were soaked, the emergence abilities were distinctively varied according to the sequent soaking days such as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days. This explained the negative relationship between first germinating days (DAS) and following soaking days. Using the method of 2 day germinating and 3 day soaking that show less than 70% of emergence ability, 31 peanut cultivars were applied to test excessive water tolerance. Emergence rates varied 0% to 69% according to cultivar. Cultivar Daekwang, Sinkwang, Daecheong and Baekseon had over 50% emergence rates. These results suggested that the degree of water resistance in germinating stage may be important point to evaluate the excessive water resistance among cultivars.
The tree of heaven naturalized plant grows in the various habitats of the city. The principal reason is that it is reproduced not only through sexual reproduction but through asexual reproduction. By the spreading of sucker and a bud appearance of the seed it forms a group easily inside the city habitat. The distribution of seed and spreading of the seedlings of the tree of heaven were investigated like the followings. As the result of the sexual reproduction by the seed and hangs in cluster farm, 350 individuals are germinated at the Namsan the best environment, and 50 individuals at Toegyewon Rotary These seeds are dispersed by the effect of wind and geographical factor. Because the northwest wind is blowing mainly from late autumn to early spring, it is dispersed in the south. In Toegyewon Rotary, a slant site, is dispersed mainly by down the site. Compared with width of crown, the seedling of a seed germination are distributed outside more than inside the crown and the seed is spreaded until the maximum 7.5 times of crown width at the investigated area. 1 year seedlings appeared as a group at the place of 2-4 times of the crown (in 20m from the crown, 75% distribution). Considering the distribution by the seed scattering of the tree of heaven, there is a possibility of sudden individual increase even in the deteriorated city environment. So this possibility shows that we need to consider the protection of the city soil, and the species variety decrease resulted from the successful competition to the other species.
Effect of nitrogen sources on mycelial growth and sclerotial formation of Rhizoctonia solani causing rice sheath blight was studied by using sixty isolates from diseased samples of different localities in Chungbuk area. Based on the cultural characters, pathogenicity and sclerotial formation, three isolates of the fungus were selected. The virulence of the three isolates varied based on the percent of seeds germination, seedling blights and length and lesion number of lesions. As nitrogen sources, arginine, alanine, urea, ammonium sulfate and sodium nitrate were more effective for mycelial growth and sclerotial formation, than were cystine, methionine, lysine, histidine, tryptophan and thyrosine. The mycelium of R. so/ani grew well in a lower concentration of urea, sodium nitrate, arginine, ammonium sulfate and lysine, but in a higher concentration of proline, histidine, and alanine. In all nitrogen sources tested, high concentration of nitrogen nutrients greatly stimulated sclerotial formation of the fungus. Arginine, urea, and ammonium sulfate increased virulence of the fungus. All the isolates grown on the basic medium plus proline produced large sclerotia. Mycelial growth of the fungus was not well in the tryptophan-added medium, showing brown discoloration of medium.

Achyranthes bidentata was recorded to new medicinal crop in a revised 8th edition of the Korean pharmacopoeia. Therefore, A. bidentata began to use for same purpose with Achyranthes japonica which was cultivated since old times in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the adaptability of A. bidentata in Korea. The germination rate and speed of A. bidentata seeds were higher than those of A. japonica in $15^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$. The growth of A. bidentata was greater than that of A. japonica until the 60 days after transplanting, but growth after that was the opposite. There were remarkable differences between two species in growth characteristics such as flowering date, leaf fall date, plant height, stem color and no. of branches. The flowering and leaf fall date of A. bidentata were earlier than A. japonica by July 7 and September 26. The plant height and number of branches of A.japonica were longer and more than A. bidentata, but the cluster length and no. of flowers per cluster of that were shorter and fewer than this. Number of supporting roots of A. bidentata and A. japonica was 10.7 and 14.6 per plant, respectively. The average yield was not different between two species. The yield of A. bidentata was 166 kg/l0 a in Suwon and 309 kg/10 a in Naju of Korea. The suitable cultivation region of A. bidentata was judged to southern area of Korea.

Benzyladenopurine (BA), a synthetic chemical commonly used for bean sprout culture, should be minimized for wellbeing foods or not be applied. The study was done to check the effect of different BA concentrations treated during 5 hour imbibition on growth and morphological characters of mungbean sprouts. The mungbean seeds of 3 cultivars (Keumseongnogdu, Owoolnogdu, and Zhong Lu 1) were imbibed for 5 hours in the solutions with different BA concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 ppm) before 3 hour aeration. On the 6th day after culture, the mungbean sprouts were classified by 4 categories on the base of hypocotyl length; > 7cm, 4 to 7cm, < 4cm, and non-germination, and their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights were measured. Regardless of cultivars the composition rate of hypocotyls of longer than 7cm was decreased with increased BA concentration over 50 ppm while the reverse result was true in the rate of shorter than 4cm. In the rate of 4 to 7cm. cv. Owoolnogdu showed the highest rate in its 50 ppm concentration although cv. Keumseongnogdu and Zhong Lu 1 showed similar result to the above two rates. Formation rate and its number of lateral roots were largely changed around 50 ppm concentration but the roots was not formed in over its 75 ppm concentration. Hypocotyl and root lengths of all the cultivars were shortened with increased BA concentration. In the diameter of middle part of hypocotyl, 3 cultivars showed nearly the same responses as the rate of 4 to 7cm hypocotyls. Hypocotyl and total fresh weights per sprout were heavier in BA treated sprouts than in no treated ones but the weights of the former sprouts were not influenced by its different concentrations.
Generation of gaseous ammonia has been a major problem in composting facilities. Microbial inocula. KMT-199(brand name: CompoBac$^{TM}$). was developed in INBI0NET CORPORATION and tested in the field for its ammonia reducing capability. When KMT-199 was applied. a ten-fold increase of mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms was observed during the early stage of composting process. Also. the temperature and pH of early stage compost increased at a higher rate when compared to control. KMT-199 treated compost reached highest temperature of $75^{\circ}C$at day 9, indicating treatment could shift the maximum composting temperature to 3 days earlier The highest temperature also reached $3^{\circ}C$ higher than the control. The pH of compost gradually increased during composting. KMT-199 treated compost reached a plateau of pH 9.32 at day 15 after treatment, and then slowly decreased thereafter. On the other hand. pH of the control steadily increased until day 38 of composting. 29% reduction of gaseous ammonia generation during composting was observed compared to that of the control. KMT-199 amended compost resulted in a higher germination rate of radish seeds than the control. These results indicate that application of microbial inocula facilitates degradation of organic materials, including ammonia during the composting process.
This experiment was conducted to determine the presence of allelopathic substance in Portulaca oleracea L. Water and methanol extract from P. oleracea markedly inhibited the germination of lettuce, rice, raddish etc., indicating the presence of biological substances. The biochemical substances such as ferulic, p-coumaric, salicylic, vanillic, p-hydroxybenzoic acid etc., belonging to phenolic compounds were detected in a large amount, which may be responsible for exhibiting inhibitory effects. Various phenolic compounds were detected from different samples such as freshly, dried plants, seeds and callus. The highest amount of tannic and gallic acids were detected in dried samples of P. oleracea, the highest grantity of salicylic and vanillic acids in fresh samples, the largest amount of ferulic acid in seed sample, the highest amount of p-hydroxybenzoic and p-chlorobenzoic acids in callus. Linolenic acid was presented in amount of 9.203 mg/g in dried plant of P. oleracea as one of the major fatty acids and oxalic acid presented 27.941 mg/g as one of the major organic acids. These compounds seemed to be related to inhibitory effect of P. oleracea which needs further study.
This research was designed to develop the rapid propagation technology of zoysiagrass using carpet production and to provide turf-growing farmers with efficient cultivation methods thor carpet production. Turfgrass cultivar tested in cadet production by seeding was Z. japonica cv. Zenith. Since the surface coverage rate reached to 85% in 2 months after seeding at the rate 6g/$m^2$ in the early part of July, carpet production using ‘Zenith’seeds would be possible to produce within within the same year. Thrfgrasses tested in carpet production by vegetative propagation were Z. japonica, medium type Z. matrella, fine type Z. matrella, and medium type Z. japonica. Planting rates of vegetative parts (sprigs) were 1.2L/$m^2$, 2.4L/$m^2$, 2.5L/$m^2$, and 5L/$m^2$. Two different sizes of sprig were used; 1~2 nodes and 3~4 nodes. Surface coverage rate was 90% in one year after planting at the rate of 2.5L sprigs of medium type Z. japonica. Therefore, the use of sprigs with 3~4 nodes at the planting rate of 2.5L would be suitable for the carpet prodcution. Three months old zoysiagrass carpet (Zenith) was overseeded with Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue at two different overseeding rate. Surface coverage rate was the highest (80%) at the plot overseeded with perennial ryegrass that showed the earliest germination. Suitable overseeding species for the rapid sod formation at the early stage of establishment were tall fescue and perennial ryegrass and desirable overseeding time was from early to middle of September.
Cacalia firma recently has been used increasingly as leaf vegetables but endangered in natural forest. In this work, we established the plant regeneration via adventitious shoot formation from petiole segments of seedling and in vitro plantlets. Wounding of seed coats and $GA_3$ treatments were effective to induce in vitro germination of seeds, whereas, seed did not germinate at all without these treatment. When cotyledon, leaf, petiole, and root segments of seedling were cultured on medium with 2 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.5 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), petiole segments showed highest number of shoots per explant among the other segments. Among the various kinds of cytokinins, BA, isopentyl adenine (2-ip), kinetin, zeatin, thidiazuron (TDZ), TDZ and BA treatments were effective to induce high frequency of adventitious shoot formation from petiole segments of in vitro propagated plants. NAA stimulated the frequency of adventitious shoot formation but not for number of adventitious shoots per explants compared to TDZ or BA treatment alone. Most of adventitious shoots were developed directly from surfaces of explants. Adventitious shoots were transferred on medium with IBA for root formation, thereafter the plantlets were successfully transferred to soil.
