A optimal procedure for plant production via repetitive secondary somatic embryogenesis in Tilia amurensis is described. Somatic embryos were induced directly from the culture of zygotic embryos on medium with 1.0 mg/l 2,4.-D. Repetitive secondary somatic embryos formed on the surface of the cotyledons and hypocotyls except for the radicles when explants of somatic embryos were cultured on medium with 4.0 mg/l 2,4-D. The highest frequency of secondary embryo-genesis was obtained in the cotyledons (90%) and hypocotyls(83.33%) on MS medium with 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D. The average number of secondary embryos per explant was 25.74 in cotyledon and 24.92 in hypocotyl. When the cotyledon and hypocotyl segments from somatic embryos at different developmental stages were cultured on MS medium with 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D, the highest frequency of secondary embryogenesis was obtained from late cotyledonary secondary embryos. Somatic embryos were transferred to MS basal medium and then they germinated within 2 to 4 weeks of culture. Germinated somatic embryos grew normally into plantlets on WPM medium, producing new shoots. The converted plantlets were acclimatized on artificial soil mixture. These results indicate that the repetitive secondary somatic embryogenesis in T amurensis can offer the possibility to use in vitro culture system for the micropropagation.

This study was conducted to develop revegetation methods for the restoration of the steep slopes by seed attached ripping net revegetation methods. In general, steep slopes with decomposed granite soils and ripping rock are easy to erode by precipitation and impossible to revegetate only using hydroseeding with core net mulching because of poor soil fertility. The Seed Attached Ripping Net Revegetation Methods(SALNRM) will be the most popular and sustainable methods to restore decomposed granite soils and ripping rock exposed slopes. The main results are summarized as follows; 1. The net size with $1.5cm{\times}1.0cm$ density was more suitable for growing plants, and increasing the ratio of the slow release fertilizer was better to make early coverage and to grow germinated plants. 2. The fertilizer bag made by the ratio of Peatmose : Vermiculite : Perlite : Quick release fertilize r : Slow release fertilizer = 10 : 2 : 5 : 3 : 4 (v : v) was the best for plant's growth. 3. According to the seed mixture experiments, even though not using foreign grasses, the SALNRM using native plants can make diverse plant composition. 4. The SALNRM will make same early ground coverage by only using native plants like using foreign grasses. The SALNRM would become the popular revegetation methods to restore decomposed granite soils and ripping rock exposed slopes in Korea.
The objective of this study was to investigate quality attributes of beef patties formulated with dried pumpkin pulp and seed mixture (PM). Four different meatball formulations were prepared where lean was replaced with PM as C (0% PM), P2 (2% PM), P3 (3% PM) and P5 (5% PM). Utilization of PM decreased moisture and increased ash content of the patties. Incorporation of 5% PM (P5) increased the pH value of both uncooked and cooked patties compared to C group. Increasing levels of PM increased water-holding capacity. No significant differences were found in cooking yield and diameter change with the addition of PM. Incorporation of PM increased fat and decreased moisture retention of the samples. $a^*$ values were decreased with PM addition, where $L^*$ values did not differ among treatments and $b^*$ values were similar in C, P3 and P5 samples. Textural properties were mostly equivalent to control samples with the incorporation of PM even at higher concentrations. The addition of PM did not significantly affect any of the sensory scores tested. These results indicated that utilization of PM presents the opportunity to decrease the amount of meat besides to improve healthier profile without causing negative changes in physical, chemical and technological quality of beef patties.
Seed storage lipids of plants, essential for seed germination as energy supplier, have been used for humankind and animal as nutrition sources. Fatty acids of vegetable oils have the characters appropriate for industry based on their chain length, the position and the number of double bonds. So they are used as raw materials for lubricants, cosmetics, soaps, paints and plastics or as energy source such as bio-diesel. However, there is a limit that applies vegetable oils from typical oil crops for industrial uses, mainly because of the mixture of five common fatty acids. Therefore, identification of unusual fatty acids for industrial uses from diverse plant resources and metabolic engineering to produce unusual fatty acids have been carried out in Arabidopsis as a model for the study of oilseed biology. Here, we discuss the unusual fatty acids for industrial uses, the genes synthesizing them in lipid metabolism, and the current limits in production of transgenic plants accumulating unusual fatty acid in their seeds. In addition, we describe our work on metabolic engineering of Brassica napus for the production of the unusual fatty acid ricinoleic acid in the seed, because of its industrial uses.
A large grain YBCO bulk superconductor is fabricated by the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) method. In the TSMG process, the seed crystal is placed on the top surface of a partially melted compact and therefore the seed crystal is frequently tilted during the melt process due to intrinsic unstable nature of Y211 particle +liquid phase mixture. In this work, we report the successful growth of single-domain YBCO bulk superconductors by a bottom-seeded melt growth (BSMG) method. Investigations on the trapped magnetic field and the microstructures of the synthesized specimens show that a bottom-seeded melt growth method has hardly affected on the crystal growth behavior, the microstructure development and the magnetic properties of the large grain YBCO bulk superconductors. The bottom-seeded melt growth method is clearly beneficial for the stable control of seed orientation through the melt process for the fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor.
The effects of density and soil nutrient regime on competition between individuals in pure and mixed populations of two annuals. Chenopodium album and Digitaria sanguinalis were investigated at the level of enegy allocation. Seedling emergence of two species was extremely high (>90%) in both pure and mixed culture irrespective of the density and nutrient regime, but percentage of seedling establishment or fertile plant became gradually low with increasing density owing to 'self-thinning'. The mean plant dry weight was significantly reduced with increasing density and decreasing soil fertility. The dry matter production of D. sanguinalis in mixture was markedly greater than in pure culture under medium and high density. Also, as considered the number of seed production as reproductive allocation, relationship between them and the number of seed production per plant showed a similar tendency. Therefore, these results indicated that D. sanguinalis had a greater competitive advantage than C. album and energy allocations to variious organs were regulated by plastic response rather than determined genetically.
Mullite/zirconia composite was synthesized by adding zirconia and Zircon to mixture of Hapcheon kaolin(grade pink A) and aluminium nitrate salt in order to enhance strength of the mullite specimens. Kaolin and aluminium nitrate salt was mixed milled and calcined at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and then 5wt% mullite seed was added to increase mullite content. The influence of the additives(ZrO2 and ZrSiO4) and sintering temperature on the strength of the sintered specimens was investigated. The flexural strength of the specimens containing 10wt% zirconia was enhanced from 150MPa without the additive up to 300MPa after heat treatment at 156$0^{\circ}C$ In the case of addition of 15wt% zircon the strength of the specimens systhesized at 1$600^{\circ}C$ was 225 MPa.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of seed mixture and nitrogen application levels on botanical composition and forage productivity in grazing pasture. Legume forage have the ability to take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into a form usable by plants. Including legumes in mixtures with grass lowers the amount of nitrogen fertilizer required to produce forages. Dry matter (DM) yield of grass-legume mixtures was more than that of grass mono-cultivated and grass+white clover+red clover mixtures was the highest as 17,391 kg/ha in legume mixture (P<0.01). The highest DM yield was in N-200 kg/ha, but it was similar between N-100 kg/ha(15,128) and N-200 kg/ha (16,017). The large decline in the proportion of grass during April to June in 2004 probably was due to the drought and summer depression in grass-legume mixtures. Grass proportions decreased by 8.2% after 2 year, and white clover was dominated in grass-white clover mixture by May 2005. Crud protein (CP) content tends to increase with increased nitrogen application level.
Botanical antimicrobial agent-grapefruit seed extract mixture (BAAG) have an unknown compounds which exhibit the antibiotic activities aganist microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. We have examined the effects of BAAG on the physiological function of Botrytis cinerea which was isolated from necrotic lesions of decayed fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, grapes, tomatoes, and red peppers during storage. In the results of enzymatic activities related to the energetic metabolism there was no inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of several enzymes in vitro including glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase, while there was inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of hexokinase and succinate dehydrogenase. O-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-galactopyranoside(ONPG), the artificial substrate of $\beta$-galactosidase was hydrolyzed in the presence of BAAG, indicating that the membrane was pertubated by the BAAG. From the results we suggested that the antibiotic activity of BAAG is due to the change of membrane permeability of the cell. BAAG was fractionated and purified by silica gel and sephadex column chromatography. Among active fractions two peaks were identified as naringin and limonin when they were analyzed by by NMR and Fast atomic bombardment.
