  • In this paper, we develope the navigation system for patrol robots in indoor environment. The proposed system consists of PDA map modelling, a localization algorithm based on a global position sensor and an automatic charging station. For the practical use in security system, the PDA is used to build object map on the given indoor map. And the builded map is downloaded to the mobile robot and used in path planning. The global path planning is performed with a localization sensor and the downloaded map. As a main controller, we use PXA270 based hardware platform in which embedded linux 2.6 is developed. Data handling for various sensors and the localization algorithm are performed in the linux platform. Also, we implemented a local path planning algorithm for object avoidance with ultra sonar sensors. Finally, for the automatic charging, we use an infrared ray system and develop a docking algorithm. The navigation system is experimented with the two-wheeled mobile robot using North-Star localization system.

  • The environment exploration is an essential process for indoor robots such as clean robot and security robot. Apartment house and office building has common frame structure, but internal arrangement of each room may be slightly different. So, it is more convenient to use a common frame map than to build a new map at every time the arrangement is changed. In this case, it is important to recognize invariant features such as wall, door and window. In this paper, an indoor mobile robot is implemented, and by using the laser scanner data and line segment histogram with respect to segment orientation and distance, an environment exploration method is presented and tested. This robot is fitted with a laser scanner, gyro sensor, ultra sonic sensor and IR sensor, and programed with C language.

  • This study attempted to propose various application and function improvement plans by analyzing robots operated in the libraries. Thus, the types and functions of robots operated by 16 domestic and foreign libraries were examined. Most of them were used for Librarian Assistance (Book Inventory, Book Delivery, Etc.) and User Service (Facility Guide, Search Aids, Etc.). Besides, the introduction of robots in the National Library of Korea (NLK) and their functional limitations were analyzed. As a result, this study presented the need to develop additional functions for the robot, develop quarantine and security robots, the need for a national-level policy for robot diffusion, and build a robot ecosystem.

  • Recently, the use of security surveillance system including CCTV is increasing due to the increase of terrors and crimes. At the same time, interest of face recognition at a distance using surveillance cameras has been increasing. Accordingly, we analyzed the performance of face recognition according to distance using PCA-based face recognition and interpolation. In this paper, we used Nearest, Bilinear, Bicubic, Lanczos3 interpolations to interpolate face image. As a result, we confirmed that existing interpolation have an few effect on performance of PCA-based face recognition and performance of PCA-based face recognition is improved by including face image according to distance in traning data.

  • Robotic systems have developed very rapidly over the past decade. Robot Operating System is an open source-based software framework for the efficient development of robot operating systems and applications, and is widely used in various research and industrial fields. ROS applications may contain various vulnerabilities. Various studies have been conducted to monitor the excution of these ROS applications at runtime. In this study, we propose a real-time attack detection system using event-based runtime monitoring in ROS 2. Our attack detection system extends tracetools of ros2_tracing to instrument events into core libraries of ROS 2 middleware layer and monitors the events during runtime to detect attacks on the application layer through out-of-order execution of the APIs.

  • This paper describes a wearable multi-modal user interface design and its implementation for a teleoperated field robot system. Recently some teleoperated field robots are employed for hazard environment applications (e.g. rescue, explosive ordnance disposal, security). To complete these missions in outdoor environment, the robot system must have appropriate functions, accuracy and reliability. However, the more functions it has, the more difficulties occur in operation of the functions. To cope up with this problem, an effective user interface should be developed. Furthermore, the user interface is needed to be wearable for portability and prompt action. This research starts at the question: how to teleoperate the complicated slave robot easily. The main challenge is to make a simple and intuitive user interface with a wearable shape and size. This research provides multi-modalities such as visual, auditory and haptic sense. It enables an operator to control every functions of a field robot more intuitively. As a result, an EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) demonstration is conducted to verify the validity of the proposed wearable multi-modal user interface.

  • In order to apply reinforcement learning to a robot in a real environment, it is necessary to use simulation in a virtual environment because numerous iterative learning is required. In addition, it is difficult to apply a learning algorithm that requires a lot of computation for a robot with low-spec. hardware. In this study, ML-Agent, a reinforcement learning frame provided by Unity, was used as a virtual simulation environment to apply reinforcement learning to the obstacle collision avoidance problem of mobile robots with low-spec hardware. A DQN supported by ML-Agent is adopted as a reinforcement learning algorithm and the results for a real robot show that the number of collisions occurred less then 2 times per minute.
