The impact of modern airport security protocols on patients with total shoulder replacements

  • Background: Advancements in airport screening measures in response to 9/11 have resulted in increased false alarm rates for patients with orthopedic and metal implants. With the implementation of millimeter-wave scanning technology, it is important to assess the changes in airport screening experiences of patients who underwent total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Methods: Here, 197 patients with prior anatomic and reverse TSA completed between 2013 and 2020 responded to a questionnaire regarding their experiences with airport travel screening after their operation. Of these patients, 86 (44%) stated that they had traveled by plane, while 111 (56%) had not. The questionnaire addressed several measures including the number of domestic and international flights following the operation, number of false alarm screenings by the millimeter-wave scanner, patient body habitus, and presence of additional metal implants. Results: A total of 53 patients (62%) responded "yes" to false screening alarms due to shoulder arthroplasty. The odds of a false screening alarm for patients with other metal implants was 5.87 times that of a false screening alarm for patients with no other metal implants (P<0.1). Of a reported 662 flights, 303 (45.8%) resulted in false screening alarms. Greater body mass index was not significantly lower in patients who experienced false screening alarms (P=0.30). Conclusions: Patients with anatomic and reverse TSA trigger false alarms with millimeter-wave scanners during airport screening at rates consistent with prior reports following 9/11. Patient education on the possibility of false alarms during airport screening is important until improvements in implant identification are made. Level of evidence: IV.

  • 강황(Curcuma longa)으로부터 bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), demethoxycurcumin (DMC) 및 curcumin의 생물 활성을 offline-ABTS 측정법과 on-line screening high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-ABTS 측정법을 적용한 빠른 스크리닝을 통해 정량 및 성분 분리를 하였다. 이때, off-line-ABTS와 on-line screening HPLC-ABTS 비교는 미미한 오차를 보여주었다.

  • This study aimed at drawing a scheme for more developmental and rational improvement of the screening examination system to cope with the rapidly changing industrial environment positively, enhance the food service industry qualitatively, and reinforce engaged specialty of those engaged in the industry. To set a rational improvement scheme for a cook screening system, the study conducted a prior study on job analysis of those engaged in cooking, a review on relevant laws, and a theoretical research on those problems in the current cook screening examination system. On this basis, it understood the actual condition of the current cook screening system and implemented a demonstrative analysis through a survey to draw a section on a future improvement scheme. The results were analyzed largely from two viewpoints: the general condition of the cook screening system and the future improvement scheme for the system.

산전 검진의 최신 지견 (The recent trend of prenatal screening)

  • Twenty years have passed since a prenatal screening for Down syndrome and neural tube defect was applied to obstetric field. The Quad test (AFP, hCG, uE3, Inhibin-A) of the second trimester and the combination test (PAPP-A, hCG, NT) of the first trimester became popular now. The recent trend of prenatal screening is to combine these two screening tests together in order to increase a detection rate of Down syndrome. Three types of screening methods are introduced as follows; integrated test, sequential test and contingent test. In addition to combination of each test, an incorporation of characteristic ultrasound findings of Down syndrome is suggested for its risk calculation. The absence of fetal nasal bone would be a very useful marker especially in the first trimester screening test. According to a change of way calculating risk of Down syndrome, obstetrician's role will be more increased not by passive participation, but by active participation using ultrasound in risk calculation.

스크리닝 도구를 이용한 건물관리업 종사자의 균형감각능력 평가 (Evaluation of Balance Capability in Facilities Maintenance Workers using Screening Tools)

  • A number of screening tools have been developed to evaluate the human balance capability. Many of them were designed to identify the elderly with falling risk. Three different screening tools, which have been well used many clinical fields, were used in this study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate balance capability in facilities maintenance workers in korea. There were no statistical significance between male and female when evaluated with three different screening tools. However, significant differences were found among the age groups irrespective of gender when evaluated with three different screening tools. The results of three different screening tools in korea showed poor values compared with previous results. These results revealed that facilities maintenance workers faced more critical falling risk in korea.

  • 오늘날 사람들의 많은 관심을 끌고 있는 생명 공학 분야에서, 가상 검색은 컴퓨터에서 가상적으로 시뮬레이션을 수행함으로서 특정 질병에 관여하는 물질을 널다 빠르게 추출하여 신약을 설계하는 방법이다. 본 논문에서는 지역적으로 분산된 유휴 또는 전략적 자원을 이용하여 가상 검색을 효과적으로 수행할 수 있는 분산 시스템인 DVSF(Distributed Virtual Screening Facilities)를 소개한다. DVSF는 중소규모의 실험실이 가지고 있는 유휴 자원을 이용하여 최소한의 비용으로 효과적인 신약 개발을 위한 환경을 구성할 수 있도록 개발되었다.

  • 레이저 다이오드의 동작 수명을 예측하고 안정화된 성능과 신뢰도를 만족하기 위해서는 검증된 시스템으로 광부품의 신뢰성 테스트를 수행하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 온도와 인가 전류에 따른 접합 온도(junction temperature) 특성을 관찰하여 실제 주위 온도 ( $T_{A}$)와 광소자의 온도( $T_{j}$) 차이를 이론 및 실험 적으로 도출하였고, 이를 토대로 정밀한 burn-in 테스트를 위한 screening 조건을 설정해 제시하였다.하였다.

  • This paper reports comparison between analytic and numerical simulation approaches for calculation of screening current and screening current induced field in a high temperature superconductor magnet. Bean slab model is adopted to calculate screening current and SCF analytically, while the finite element method numerically. A case study of screening current and SCF calculation are conducted with a magnet, a 7 T 68 mm cold-bore multi-width no-insulation GdBCO magnet built and tested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory. In this study, we assume the magnet is dunked in liquid nitrogen at 77 K. Furthermore, the simulation results are compared in terms of computation time and accuracy. Finally, discussion on the different methods together with the comparison between the calculations and experiment is provided.

위암 선별검사 현황 (Current Status of Gastric Cancer Screening)

  • Gastric cancer is the fifth most common malignancy in the world and still remains the third and fifth leading cause of cancer death in male and female, respectively. In terms of the cancer survival, the survival of gastric cancer is low in the West with showed 5-year survival rates of 10-30%, whereas the survival rates in Asia is more than 50%. The reason of the higher survival rate from gastric cancer in Asia partially related with the availability of gastric cancer screening programs, however, the population-based screening for gastric cancer has been conducted just in Korea and Japan. Therefore, more effective method for detecting the gastric cancer is needed for countries without a population-based gastric cancer screening. Endoscopy is the most effective method for diagnosis of gastric cancer however, it requires a large infrastructure including a large number of endoscopic equipment and well-trained endoscopists. To overcome these problems, several noninvasive methods (such as serologic markers, biomarkers, cancer autoantibodies, and exhaled breath analysis) for diagnosis of gastric cancer screening are suggested. This review addresses the conventional methods and the emerging methods for gastric cancer screening.
