  • We consider the single machine scheduling problem with a rate-modifying activity and time-dependent deterioration after the activity. The class of scheduling problems with rate-modifying activities and the class of scheduling problems with time-dependent processing times have been studied independently. However, the integration of these classes is motivated by human operators of tasks who has fatigue while carrying out the operation of a series of tasks. This situation is also applicable to machines that experience performance degradation over time due to mal-position or mal-alignment of jobs, abrasion of tools, and scraps of operations, etc. In this study, the integration of the two classes of scheduling problems is considered. We present a mathematical model to determine job-sequence and a position of a rate-modifying activity for the integration problem. Since the model is difficult to solve as the size of real problem being very large, we propose genetic algorithms. The performance of the algorithms are compared with optimal solutions with various problems.

  • Ceramics manufacturers in the nation produced more than 5000 tons of ceramics wastes a year increasing industrial waste quantity: However, almost no researches were made to reduce environmental pollution and to recycle waste ware. In this study, white ware scraps that were produced at Icheon, Gyeonggi-do were recycled to make use of them as raw materials of ceramics body and to develop new ceramics body that had economic advantages and good quality. The findings showed that the addition of waste ware had limit of 20 wt% considering molding. The addition of waste ware of 20 wt% to white ware lowered baking temperature of the white ware that was added by waste ware of 20 wt% by 30$^{\circ}C$ than existing white ware, and property values were good, for instance, porosity of 3% in average and water absorptivity of 2% in average, and the bending strength recorded more than 800 kgf/$cm^2$ to be high than that of existing white ware being sold in market. The waste ware could be used to produce new ware body and to recycle resources and to solve environmental problems caused by burial and to improve property of ceramics and to save transportation costs as well as baking costs.

  • For recycling of tantalum from obsolete condenser, physical separations and chlorination of tantalum scraps with $Cl_2$ and $CCl_4$ were investigated. The recovery ratio of tantalum from obsolete condenser was 98% by using a multidisciplinary process of crushing by stamp mill, wet gravity separation by the shaking table, and air classification. In the chlorination reaction of non-oxidized Ta anode with $Cl_2$, the highest weight loss ratio is at least 60%, while in the chlorination reaction of Ta anode with $CCl_4$, the reaction rate for the oxidized Ta anode is faster than that of the non-oxidized Ta anode.

  • Inherent in machine tool structures are the vibrations which are generated by rotating parts such as motors, spindles and chucks. The vibrations not only hurt the precision machining but also damage the structures, and become more serious with time. Many of the old machine tools show severe vibrations for the desired accuracy of the modern industries. It is too much of a waste, however, to get rid of them as scraps. There have been many researches in order to suppress the vibrations of old machine tool structures using the tool post which utilizes actuators to compensate the existing vibrations and using the dampers or absorbers attached to some critical parts. In this paper, the dynamic properties are analyzed to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a machine tool structure which reflect the main reasons of the biggest vibrations under the given operating conditions. And the feasibility of improving the stability of the structure has been investigated with minor design changes and expenses. The result of the study shows that simple changes based on proper system identification can considerably improve the stability of the machine tool structure.

  • Virgin NBR and recycled NBR particles, which were pulverized from NBR scraps by high temperature shear-crushing technique, were blended with different mixing ratio. The effects of the recycled NBR content on the cure characteristics and physical properties of these blends were investigated and resistance properties of these blends to heat and various fluids were also studied. The study of cure characteristics showed that the viscosity increased but the scorch time decreased. The physical properties of rubber blends were improved with the addition of the recycled NBR for heat resistance and various fluid tests.

  • Because of its unique properties, tungsten is a strategic and rare metal used in various industrial applications. However, the world's annual production of tungsten is only 84000 t. Ammonium paratungstate (APT), which is used as the main intermediate in industrial tungsten production, is usually obtained from tungsten concentrates of wolframite and scheelite by hydrometallurgical treatment. Intermediates such as tungsten trioxide, tungsten blue oxide, tungstic acid, and ammonium metatungstate can be derived from APT by thermal decomposition or chemical attack. Tungsten metal powder is produced through the hydrogen reduction of high-purity tungsten oxides, and tungsten carbide powder is produced by the reaction of tungsten powder and carbon black powder at 1300-1700℃ in a hydrogen atmosphere. Tungsten scrap can be divided into hard and soft scrap based on shape (bulk or powder). It can also be divided into new scrap generated during the production of tungsten-bearing goods and old scrap collected at the end of life. Recycling technologies for tungsten can be divided into four main groups: direct, chemical, and semi-direct recycling, and melting metallurgy. In this review, the current status of tungsten smelting and recycling technologies is discussed.

  • The existing wet reconversion processes for the recovery of scraps generated in manufacturing of nuclear fuel are complex and require several unit operation steps. In this study, it is attempted to simplify the recovery process of high-quality fuel-grade UO2 powder. A novel wet reconversion process for uranyl nitrate hexahydrate solution is suggested by using a newly developed pulsed fluidized bed reactor, and the resultant chemical characteristics are evaluated for the intermediate ammonium uranate hydrate product and subsequently converted UO2 powder, as well as the compliance with nuclear fuel specifications and advantages over existing wet processes. The UO2 powder obtained by the suggested process improved fuel pellet properties compared to those derived from the existing wet conversion processes. Powder performance tests revealed that the produced UO2 powder satisfies all specifications required for fuel pellets, including the sintered density, increase in re-sintered density, and grain size. Therefore, the processes described herein can aid realizing a simplified manufacturing process for nuclear-grade UO2 powders that can be used for nuclear power generation.

  • This article aims to summarize the recycling status of scrap gold, silver, platinum, and palladium by regions and industries in order to utilize the data for securing raw materials of the domestic urban mining industry. The amount of gold from scrap has shown a tendency to decrease in countries other than China over the last ten years, which is attributed to the increase in scrap containing gold in China. The industry demand for gold is the highest in electronic products, but it is decreasing. The amount of scrap recycling for silver has declined but total silver production has increased by increasing mine products. As production and demand from platinum and palladium scrap are mostly for catalysts, their demand could be affected by the electric vehicle industry.

  • The electrochemical properties of cells assembled with the $LiNiO_2$ (LNO) recycled from cathode materials of waste lithium secondary batteries ($Li[Ni,Co,Mn]O_2$), were evaluated in this study. The leaching, neutralization and solvent extraction process were applied to produce high-purity $NiSO_4$ solution from waste lithium secondary batteries. High-purity NiO powder was then fabricated by the heat-treatment and mixing of the $NiSO_4$ solution and $H_2C_2O_4$. Finally, $LiNiO_2$ as a cathode material for lithium ion secondary batteries was synthesized by heat treatment and mixing of the NiO and $Li_2CO_3$ powders. We assembled the cells using the $LiNiO_2$ powders and evaluated the electrochemical properties. Subsequently, we evaluated the recycling possibility of the cathode materials for waste lithium secondary battery using the processes applied in this work.

  • It should be noted that the use of the lathe scrap for making fiber reinforced cementitious composites raised friendly environmental effect as well as economy because the lathe scrap is a by-product of steel manefactures and is occurred when lathe and milling works of them are conducted to process steel manufactures. Thus, the purpose of this experimental research is to investigate workability and strength characteristics of lathe scrap reinforced cementitious composites(LSRCCs). For this purpose, three types of lathe scraps were collected from processing plants of metal, and then LSRCCs containing these were made for 2mm width and 40mm length. As a result, it was observed from the test results that the workability of LSRCCs was slightly decreased than plain mortar and the flexural strength of LSRCCs were much larger than these of plain mortar and effect of types of lathe scrap on the characteristics of LSRCCs were somewhat large.
