한국과학사 자료를 이용한 과학교육의 가능성 (The Possibility of Science Education Using the History of Korean Science)

  • Science has developed along with human society and history. In today's society ruled by pluralism, an educational approach using the historical materials which represent their own cultures will make science education more effective. The purpose of this study was to search for the meaning of science education related with a history of science, and to suggest the possibility for science education based on Korean history of science. The conclusions of this study is below: (1) The history of science is useful to teaching science in K-12 setting. That is because it was helpful to make a scientific concept and to invite student's interest about learning science. Moreover, it was most suitable to teach the nature of science as well as the relation between science and society. (2) A model which consists of 15 types of science education materials using Korean history was suggested. This model plays a potential role as a R&D framework of developing teaching & learning materials based on the history of Korean Science.

과학교육에서 추구해야 할 인성교육의 방향과 그 실현 방안으로서 Nature-Study에 대한 이론적 고찰 (Directions for Character Education in Science Education and a Theoretical Approach of Nature-Study in Terms of Character Education)

  • 이 연구에서는 과학교육에서 추구해야 할 인성교육의 방향을 모색하고 과학교육에서 인성교육을 구현할 수 있는 방법으로 Nature-Study 사상을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 인성교육 관련 문헌을 수집 분석하고 과학교육에서 추구해야 할 인성교육의 방향을 도출하였으며 과학교육 전문가 2인과 과학교육을 전공하는 박사과정생 4인으로 구성된 전문가 워크숍을 통해서 검증하였다. 또 Nature-Study가 과학교육에서 인성교육을 구현할 수 있는 방안인지 문헌을 통해 이론적으로 고찰하였다. 그 결과 과학교육에서 추구해야 할 인성교육의 방향은 첫째, 인성의 가치 영역 확장을 통해 인성교육에서 과학교육의 역할을 확립하고, 둘째, 실천 중심의 인성교육을 실현해야 한다는 것이다. 이를 '확장된 인성의 가치 영역 모델'과 '실천 중심의 인성 발현 메커니즘'으로 구체화하였다. '확장된 인성의 가치 영역 모델'은 지금까지 '자신, 주변인, 대중'이 중심이었던 '관계맺음'의 대상을 '생명과 환경, 영적대상'으로까지 확대한 것이고, '실천 중심의 인성 발현 메커니즘'은 '가치-판단-실행'의 인성 발현 과정에서 '관계맺음, 실제 상황, 실천 의지'의 단계 이행 매개와 '공감'을 강조한 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 과학교육에서 인성교육을 구현할 수 있는 방안으로 '자연을 통한 과학학습'을 강조하는 Nature-Study를 제시하였다. Nature-Study는 교육 목적에도 인성교육의 요소가 나타날 정도로 인성이 강조되었던 과학교육 방법이었을 뿐만 아니라 자연과의 관계맺음과 실천을 강조한다는 점에서 이 연구에서 도출한 과학교육에서 추구해야 할 인성교육의 방향과도 일치한다. 결론적으로 과학교육은 인성의 가치 영역 확장을 통해 인성교육에서의 역할을 확립하고 실천 중심의 인성교육을 실현해야 하며 이를 실제로 구현하기 위한 과학교육의 방법은 '자연을 통한 과학학습'을 실현하는 Nature-Study이 된다. 따라서 Nature-Study는 학교 과학교육에서 인성교육을 실행하는 방안으로 활용될 수 있다.

Comparing the Formats and Content of the State Science Content Standards of Six States in U. S. with Emphasis on Earth Science

  • This study identifies and compares science content standards that are approved by departments of education in six states: California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia. Specifically, the study examines the goals/visions, the organizing/progression principles, the strands of science content, and earth science content found in the states curriculum standards compared to National Science Education Standards. Although many states followed the recommendations of NSES or Project 2061, the format and content of the state science standards reviewed are very diverse. The diversity seems to reflect the diverse perspectives and needs of the states. The results of this study provide Korean educators and teachers with useful models or examples to incorporate Korean national science curriculum guides into the science curriculum frameworks of their regions or schools.

융합 인재 교육(STEAM)을 적용한 과학수업이 초등학생의 창의성과 과학 관련 태도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Science Lesson Applying STEAM Education on the Creativity and Science Related Attitudes of Elementary School Students)

  • As the necessity of creative and convergent people who will lead the future society is emphasized, STEAM education is becoming an issue as new science education method. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of science lesson applying STEAM education on the creativity and science related attitudes of elementary school students. In this study, the science lesson applying STEAM education meant integrated lesson included 'Creative planning' and 'Emotional experience'. The study subjects were four classes of the 4th grade of D elementary school in Busan. Two classes including 43 students were experimental group and the others including 40 students were comparison group. For the purpose of study, 'The state change of water' unit in the 4th grade elementary science text book was analyzed and recomposed applying STEAM education. And the recomposed unit was applied to experimental group, whereas comparison group was taught traditional science lesson. The results of this study were as follows. First, the science lesson applying STEAM education influenced significantly the improvement of the creativity of elementary school students. Second, the science lesson applying STEAM education influenced significantly the improvement of the science related attitudes of elementary school students.

Developing A Framework for Performance Assessment in Science Education

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a Framework for Performance Assessment in Science Education(FPASE). Science educators in the past have paid more attention to science curriculum and teaching strategies than assessment. In recent years, attention has turned toward performance assessment which addresses the concerns of science curriculum and instruction, and which is consistent with goals of science education at various levels of interests. Science educators are trying to do performance assessment, yet they don't have a framework that is highly qualified in terms of science educational objectives for the future, and advantages of performance assessment. We, therefore, have developed a framework for performance assessment in science education, which may be useful for science teachers to understand and assess their students' abilities. We have extracted seven domains covering students' various abilities as the important objectives of science performance assessment and grouped them into three categories: General, Science specific, and Intermediate abilities. And we developed a F-PASE with a three dimensional solid figured structure, and illustrated it as the configuration of a com. F-PASE is useful for science teachers to develop and select a science performance assessment as well as have a more advanced understanding of their students' abilities. It is a creative and novel assessment framework in terms of structure, configuration, functions and meanings. It also suggests a new vision of an assessment framework in science education.

Perception of the Scientifically Gifted and Long-term Effects of Science Gifted Education Program - from the Students' Perspectives

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of a science gifted education program. 155 students who experienced the SNU science gifted education program were interviewed. The interview questions consisted of eligible questions from 'Interview Protocol of Hertzog' (2003) based on 'Recommended Practice in Gifted Education (Shore, Cornell, & Ward, 1991)'. All interviews were immediately transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. It was found that scientifically gifted students had similar concepts of the gifted to what scholars consider as the gifted. Comparing the programs to school education program, the students agreed that the science gifted education program provided more experiments opportunities, higher and deeper level of contents, and more active interactions. Regarding long-term effects, it was found that program influenced on students' decisions for the future, stimuli and expansion of horizons, school work and entrance examinations. Students gained self-confidence and became more interested in science. Some pointed out that they felt greater stimulated, although some indicated an elevated level of self conceit. Implications of science gifted education were found based on these results.

초등 예비교사의 과학 교수에 대한 태도 조사 (A Survey on Pre-service Elementary Teachers' Attitudes towards Science Teaching)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes towards science teaching using 'Dimensions of Attitude Toward the Teaching of Science (DAS)'. After confirming the factors and reliabilities of the translated questionnaire by pilot test (N=68), the survey was administered online at one national university of education in Korea (N=527). The pre-service teachers generally thought elementary science education is important and did not believe gender difference in students and in teachers. Science education majors than other majors, males than females, and those who completed high school science track than humanity track had more positive attitudes toward science teaching in elementary school. The extent of teacher education curriculum completion had a little effect on the pre-service teachers' attitudes toward science teaching. The implications for teacher education were discussed.

현대 과학교육의 동향과 시스템사고 패러다임의 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of the Trends of Current Science Education and the System Thinking Paradigm)

  • The purposes of this study are to understand the trends of current science education compared with thinking paradigm and to find the direction of reform in holistic view. It is divided into three parts. Firstly, significant trends of science education during the late 20th century were examined. Secondly, the current society was discussed, particularly focused on the thinking paradigm. Thirdly, the science education trends and thinking paradigms were compared. The results are 1) A major goal of contemporary science education is the scientific literacy, for which the constructivist and STS class are introduced, 2) Thinking paradigm is changing from analytics to systemics, and 3) Compared the current science education and system thinking paradigm, they seem consistent in respect of looking for the whole-part relationship.

과학교사에 관한 선행연구 분석 (An Analysis of Preceding-Research on Science-Teacher and Science-Teacher Education in Korea and America)

  • There were many studies on the science teacher. Also, there were many researches on the science teacher education. What seems to be needed is more analysis and synthesis of these results. In this study, the results of preceding-research were analyzed and categorized. The study subjects were preceding-researches published on the 'Journal of the Korean Association for Research in Science Education' and the 'Science Education' of America. The results of this study were as follows : The trend of research on science teacher and teacher education became more various and diverse. The domain of research were categorized in three : (1) Teacher Character(of Cognitive and Affective), (2) Teacher Education(of in-service and pre-service ), (3) Professional Practice (of Teaching). The implication of this study was that it was more necessary to investigate on the teacher's teaching strategies.
