  • This study aims to investigate the experiences of librarians/staff members who are responsible for facilitating makerspaces in public libraries, including their works and core competencies, their needs and experiences of training, and future plans in makerspaces. To do that, we carried out semi-structured interviews with 11 librarians/staff members and 1 library director from 7 public library makerspaces. Findings show that the participants received financial supports from the government agencies or/and relied on their library budget to run makerspaces. They identified competencies such as technology literacy, domain knowledge, teaching/programming, willingness to learn and curiosity, communication skills, leadership, and design-thinking. They have future plans for expanding spaces, purchasing equipments, program development, and so on. We believe findings could be useful for those who currently manage or plan to implement a public library makerspace by understanding practical issues and training needs in makerspaces.

Accordingly, it is necessary to find new core values of the school library in addition to access and assistance which are the library's traditional values. This study analyzed the central keywords in the contents of mission and vision appeared in the International School Library Standards and acquired core values being composed of 5 fields such as education, collaboration, access, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and democratic citizenship. As a result of analyses of missions and visions in America, Australia, UK, and Canada School Library Standards, it seems that life-long learning skills, physical access and social responsibility are common core values. America and UK School Library Standards which were revised recently are underlining technology skills, multiple literacies and integrated information literacy curriculum particularly. Ultimately, these core values will be utilized as the directions and basic materials for the establishment of missions and visions for the school library in Korea.

  • This paper detailed the content and methods of the instructional activities of teacher-librarians in Korea. Using Kuhlthau's levels of education model as a theoretical framework, the study analyzed its data on the direct instructional activities the Korean teacher-librarians reported. The participants included four researchers in school libraries as well as the high school teacher-librarians in Seoul. Written survey were conducted for researchers and teacher-librarians respectively. The results show that there exists a gap between the theoretical emphasis on instructional activities of teacher-librarians and the practice of teacher -librarians in schools, and that the level of instructional activities has not yet advanced fully to the high levels of instructional activities. Future efforts should be made on developing legal as well as educational systems to support advancing the instructional levels of teacher-librarians. Integrating information literacy curricula into the national-level curriculum for public education could be a good example.

It intends to examine the concept of IC to draw the IC elements applicable to school libraries and propose a feasible model for them. The main objects of this study are school libraries and Information Commons. In particular, this study brings the derivation of IC elements and the construction of an IC model for school libraries into focus. This study sorted the three factors by peculiarities of school libraries. Each classification is as follows: physical elements were divided into learning space, creation space, community space, and service counters; human resources were divided into teacher-librarian. IT engineers, and student assistants; and services were divided into information literacy training and integrated, collaborative services. Based upon the derived IC constituents, it proposed a diagram that outlines the IC services concept for school libraries, an IC model and an IC floor plan for them.

  • This study analyzed the access to health-related information by migrant marriage women in Korea. Specifically, this study examined major issues, problems, and solutions related to immigrant women's experiences of seeking health related information while they struggle to settle down. It also analyzed the barriers to accomplish their purposes. For this, the study collected interview data from 12 informants and analyzed the transcript by utilizing qualitative data analysis software, Nvivo10. It has been revealed that migrant marriage women have experienced difficulties to obtain quality health information although they tend to have more health related problems than their time in homelands because of marriage, pregnancy, and patriarchal family culture in a new environment. It is expected that the results of the study will have the government and public agencies alerted the importance of public health information to migrant marriage women, and provide them with implications to build proper strategies.

  • This study aimed to exploratorily investigate the new roles of libraries in the era of K-MOOC. For this, potential roles were derived and categorized from former researches and practices. And to evaluate the appropriacy of those roles, two expert surveys were conducted. Panel A was comprised of 30 professors who had been running K-MOOC classes and Panel B was comprised of 30 librarians of Universities that had adopted K-MOOC. The result shows that they both agree about distinct roles of library as information provider such as licensing and providing digital contents requested from information users, while technological part, for example, recording video and audio, managing website, and providing open access, was considered inappropriate because those roles were already taken by CTLs. Also, professors agree that information literacy education is required for teachers not just for students as the speed of technological development is too swift and librarians agree that they have to equipped with core competence in preparation for upcoming change by creating added value, establishing closer relationship with various educational and technological institutes, and securing organizational flexibility.

  • This study investigated the contribution of Korean phonological awareness to English phonological awareness and the relations of phonological awareness with reading and writing in Korean Hangul and English among Korean 5th graders. With age and vocabulary knowledge statistically controlled, Korean phonological awareness was transferred to English phonological awareness. Specifically, syllable and phoneme awareness in Korean transferred to syllable awareness in English, and Korean phoneme awareness transferred to English phoneme awareness. In addition, English phoneme awareness independently explained significant variance of reading and writing in Korean and English after controlling for age and vocabulary. Syllable awareness in Korean and English explained Hangul reading and writing, respectively. The results suggest cross-language transfer of phonological awareness that is a metalinguistic skill. Phoneme awareness is important in reading and writing in English whereas both of syllable and phoneme awareness are important in literacy of Korean.
